A gaming laptop’s fans often get louder during demanding play because the CPU and GPU produce more heat and the cooling system moves more air to carry it away. Start by clearing the vents and checking the laptop’s thermal mode; use the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning, updates, and diagnostics. Fan noise alone does not prove there is a fault.
Why a gaming laptop gets hot and loud
Games and other demanding workloads raise internal temperatures. The cooling system responds by increasing fan speed, so a ramp-up during play can be normal. ASUS describes this behavior for resource-intensive work, and Dell notes that fan speed and noise can change with internal temperature: ASUS overheating and fan troubleshooting and Dell overheating and thermal-issue guidance.

Noise is best judged in context: consider what the laptop is doing, which thermal mode is active, whether its airflow is obstructed, and what the manufacturer says is normal for that model. There is no single temperature threshold established for all gaming laptops.

- Set the laptop on a firm, open surface rather than a bed, blanket, or other material that can block vents.
- Keep intake and exhaust openings clear, and leave space around them so air can move.
- Check for visible dust around external vents. Follow the exact model’s manual and warranty or service guidance before cleaning or opening the chassis.
A stand or cooling pad may help elevate a laptop and give its vents more room, but it is an optional airflow aid—not a guaranteed fix. ASUS suggests a stand or cooling pad, while Lenovo advises checking product specifications and compatibility before buying one: Lenovo’s laptop-cooling guidance.

Choose a thermal mode that fits the task
Use the laptop maker’s supported control app or documented setting to select a thermal profile. A quieter profile may reduce fan activity, while a performance profile may favor sustained performance at the cost of more fan noise and heat. Names, availability, and effects vary by model; check the manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming modes behave alike.
For example, HP says some notebook models offer a quiet thermal profile in its fan-noise troubleshooting guidance. Lenovo’s Legion operation-mode documentation describes model-specific modes; Lenovo also says Performance mode on specified Legion and LOQ generations allows higher temperature and fan speed. On the Legion 5 models covered by Lenovo’s battery-drain guidance, Performance mode may not be available on battery or with an under-rated power adapter.

When comparing modes, consider fan noise, sustained performance, temperature behavior, power source or adapter constraints, and whether the setting exists on your specific laptop.

Clean vents cautiously
Dust can interfere with airflow, so inspect the external vents and follow the maker’s procedure. HP includes vent cleaning in its troubleshooting steps. ASUS advises using commercially available compressed-air cans from a distance and not holding the can upside down. These are general recommendations, not permission to dismantle every laptop: consult the exact model’s manual and service or warranty instructions first.

Check software and get help if the problem persists
If airflow and an appropriate thermal mode do not resolve the issue, use the manufacturer’s guidance for your exact model. HP recommends checking for suspicious processes and considering a BIOS update as part of its troubleshooting; follow the laptop maker’s support instructions for any updates or diagnostics.
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if overheating continues, the laptop shuts down, a fan stops working, or fan behavior changes abruptly or includes unusual mechanical noise. Those symptoms deserve diagnosis rather than repeated setting changes.
