How many goalie starts do you need this week?
Use your league’s actual minimum—not a general rule of thumb. Yahoo calls its threshold Minimum Goalie Appearances. Its help guidance says an active goalie earns an appearance by officially touching the ice. If your team misses the configured minimum, it will not win goalie categories or earn points from goalie performance for that period. Private-league commissioners can change the setting. Check your platform’s rule before setting a target

These consequences are provider-specific. Before planning starts, open the settings for your own league and note the minimum, cap, scoring format, matchup dates and lineup deadlines.
Build a weekly goalie plan
- Record the rules. Note the appearance minimum, any weekly or matchup cap, goalie scoring categories, lineup-change frequency, lock deadlines and transaction limits. Do not assume a platform default applies to a private league.
- Estimate appearances, not just team games. Check the NHL schedule and current starting-goalie projections before your lineup locks. A scheduled team game is only an opportunity: the goalie has to play to earn an appearance under Yahoo’s documented rule.
- Protect the minimum with a buffer. Aim for likely appearances rather than relying on uncertain starts at the last moment. This matters most when missing the minimum forfeits goalie categories or points for the period.
- Pace starts around a cap. If your league has a maximum, compare your expected starts with remaining capacity and the rest of the matchup schedule. On ESPN, a breach does not erase the rest of that day’s goalie stats, but later days in that matchup do not count in goalie slots.
- Assess the marginal start. Decide whether another appearance is worth pursuing based on the categories you need and your current matchup position. A start can create more chances for wins or shutouts, but can also affect save percentage and goals-against average.
- Use schedule-based pickups only if they fit your roster rules. If transactions are permitted, adding goalies for favorable schedules can increase appearance opportunities. Balance volume against efficiency
Goalie scoring determines whether more starts help. NHL.com’s fantasy glossary identifies wins and shutouts as common volume categories, and save percentage and goals-against average as efficiency categories. Points leagues may also reward appearances or saves, so check the scoring settings rather than assuming categories.
When comparing two options, consider the factors together:
- Expected appearances: projected starts, likely workload and whether the goalie is a clear starter or part of a tandem.
- Scoring opportunity: the volume categories or points your league rewards, alongside the risk to save percentage and goals-against average.
- Schedule and locks: when the team plays, how certain the start is and whether the platform locks the goalie for a day or a week.
- Rule exposure: how close you are to the minimum and how much capacity remains under a cap.
NHL.com’s glossary says rostering both goalies in a tandem can help pursue appearance volume, while emphasizing the need to balance volume and efficiency. It does not establish a guaranteed start count or formula that works across leagues. NHL.com fantasy hockey glossary

Account for lineup locks
With weekly lineups, a goalie can become unavailable for changes before the week’s games begin. CBS Sports’ 2026–27 free rules lock each player five minutes before that player’s first scheduled game of the week, with weekly lineups running Monday through Sunday except Week 1. Review projected starters and the schedule before that deadline, then account for uncertainty in your minimum plan. With daily changes, keep checking starts as the week progresses, while staying within any cap and transaction limits.

Keep season-long minimums separate from weekly ones
A weekly minimum is not the same as a season requirement. CBS Sports’ 2026–27 free rotisserie rules use a season threshold of 82 combined goalie games; teams that fall short finish last in save percentage and goals-against average.
