First identify the GNOME Shell version, then verify that each extension explicitly supports it. Use the GNOME Extensions app to update, configure, disable, or remove extensions; use Looking Glass when the app or Shell is misbehaving. On managed computers, administrators control shared extensions with dconf defaults and locks.
GNOME does not document a fine-grained permission-prompt system for extensions. The practical permission decision is whether an extension is allowed to run in your Shell session. Check its maintainer, source, release activity, and supported Shell versions before enabling it, and recheck every extension before a major GNOME upgrade.

What a GNOME Shell extension is—and what “permissions” means
GNOME Shell extensions add or change Shell behavior, such as panels, menus, workspace controls, indicators, or themes. Each extension is identified by a globally unique identifier (UUID). GNOME uses that UUID in the extension directory name, in the enabled-extension setting, and when matching an installed extension with its listing.
GNOME documents two installation scopes:
| Scope | Directory | Who normally controls it | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per user | ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/<uuid> |
The individual user | Personal customization without changing other accounts |
| Machine-wide | /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/<uuid> |
The system administrator | A shared extension supplied to multiple users |
These locations and the UUID model are described in GNOME’s extension administration guide.

The official material does not describe Android-style prompts for separate capabilities, nor does it promise that extensions are sandboxed. Treat enabling an extension as trusting its code to participate in your desktop session. That does not mean every extension is unsafe; it means the enable/disable control is the documented boundary. Prefer a recognizable project, inspect its maintainer information and recent releases, and avoid enabling an extension whose origin or compatibility claims you cannot verify.
Check your GNOME Shell version before changing an extension
Compatibility is tied to the GNOME Shell version, not just to the distribution name. A listing can be current for one Shell release and unusable on another. The exact menu wording varies by distribution, but this workflow works across GNOME-based systems:
- Open your system’s Settings and look for an About, System, or distribution-information page that reports the GNOME version. If your distribution separates the desktop version from the Shell version, record the Shell version specifically.
- Open the extension’s page on extensions.gnome.org or the project’s distribution listing.
- Read the page’s supported Shell-version list and its current status. Do not infer support from the extension’s name, screenshots, or an old installation that happened to work.
- Record the UUID and the supported versions for extensions you rely on. This makes a later upgrade review much faster.
Compatibility metadata can change when a maintainer publishes a new release. A page that was compatible last month is not evidence that the current package is compatible today, and a listing on the site is not a guarantee that the extension is bug-free on every Shell release.

Why GNOME 45 needs special attention
GNOME 45 moved GNOME Shell from GJS’s custom import system to standard JavaScript modules. The GNOME 45 developer release notes state that extensions written for earlier versions are incompatible with GNOME 45 and later. The Shell development explanation at GNOME Shell & Mutter development adds the reverse constraint: an extension adapted only for GNOME 45 will not work on older Shell versions.
| Extension build | Expected result | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Written for a pre-45 Shell and never ported | Not compatible with GNOME 45 or later | A newer release or a separate 45-plus version |
| Ported only to GNOME 45 or later | Not compatible with older Shell releases | An older branch or separately published version |
| Maintainer supports both sides | Separate versions may be offered | Distinct entries or version selections on the extension site |
Because of this module change, a major upgrade can disable several extensions at once even when the extensions worked perfectly on the previous release.
Install and use the GNOME Extensions app
The Extensions app is GNOME’s graphical control center for extension updates, preferences, enabling and disabling, and removal. Its app listing says GNOME 3.36 or newer is required. Packaging and availability depend on your distribution, so install the package offered by your distribution rather than assuming every GNOME installation includes it. The listing currently identifies version 50.0 as released on 2026-03-14; that is app release metadata, not a promise about an individual extension’s compatibility.

After installing the app, open it from the application overview and select an extension. The available controls normally include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- A switch to enable or disable the extension.
- An update action when a newer extension version is available through the app’s configured source.
- A preferences button when the extension supplies a settings panel.
- A remove action for an extension installed in your user scope.
Labels can differ slightly between distributions and app versions. If an expected control is absent, check whether the extension was installed by the operating system as a package or placed in the machine-wide directory; system-managed files may need to be changed by an administrator.
Browser-based management
The web interface at extensions.gnome.org can manage extensions through browser integration. It requires both the browser integration extension and a native host messaging application. Installing only the browser add-on is therefore insufficient. Once both pieces are present, the site can show the Shell versions and status associated with an extension, but you should still compare that information with the Shell version installed on your computer.
Update an extension without losing control of your desktop
There is no universal update schedule established for all GNOME extensions, and the official app description does not establish that every update requires a Shell restart. Use the update indicator provided by your installed app or distribution and verify compatibility rather than waiting for a particular interval.
- Open Extensions and note which extensions currently provide important functions.
- Check your GNOME Shell version against each extension’s supported-version list.
- Review the extension’s release notes or maintainer comments when available, especially after a Shell upgrade.
- Update one extension at a time when the app offers individual controls. This preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail if a problem appears.
- After each update, exercise the feature you depend on: open its menu, change a setting, switch workspaces, or perform the action the extension modifies.
- If behavior becomes unstable, immediately switch the extension off in Extensions. Do not leave a malfunctioning extension enabled while testing unrelated changes.
- Record the extension version and the Shell version if you need to report a bug or ask the maintainer for help.
An update can change compatibility in either direction: a maintainer may add support for a new Shell release, or a package may drop support for an older one. The supported-version information on the listing is therefore part of the update decision, not optional background reading.

Disable, remove, or inspect an extension
Disable it from Extensions
Open Extensions, locate the extension, and turn its switch off. Disabling is the safest first response because it leaves the files available for re-enabling after you identify the cause. Use this when a panel disappears, a menu stops opening, the Shell reports an error, or a newly updated extension changes desktop behavior unexpectedly.

Remove a user-installed extension
In Extensions, select the extension and choose Remove when that action is available. Removal is appropriate when you no longer need the extension or when its maintainer has stopped supporting your Shell version. If the remove control is unavailable, the extension may be installed machine-wide or managed as a distribution package; an administrator must then remove or upgrade it.
Inspect installed extensions with Looking Glass
GNOME documents Looking Glass as a diagnostic view. Press Alt+F2, enter lg, and select the Extensions view. You can use it to see which extensions are installed and inspect their current state when the normal app is not enough. Keep in mind that Looking Glass is a diagnostic tool, not a substitute for checking the extension’s supported Shell versions.
If a managed computer prevents you from opening Looking Glass, that may be intentional: administrators can lock the development-tools setting, as described below.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Troubleshoot compatibility failures
Start with the smallest change that restores a usable desktop. The following symptoms point to different checks:
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The extension is listed but cannot be enabled | Shell-version support or a policy restriction | Compare the listing’s supported versions with your Shell version; on a managed system, ask whether dconf locks allow it. |
| The extension vanished after a major upgrade | Compatibility metadata or a breaking Shell change | Look for a release adapted to the new Shell, especially if upgrading to or beyond GNOME 45. |
| The Shell becomes unstable immediately after an update | The newest extension release | Disable that extension first, then test the desktop before changing anything else. |
| The web site does not detect your desktop | Missing browser integration or native host | Install both required components, then revisit the extension page. |
| Removal is unavailable | Machine-wide installation or package ownership | Have an administrator remove it from the system location or update the distribution package. |
For GNOME 45-related failures, do not try to make a pre-45 extension work by changing an unrelated preference. Find a version explicitly ported to the standard JavaScript module system, or keep the extension disabled until the maintainer supplies one.
Choose between extensions that do the same job
When several extensions offer similar features, compare evidence rather than popularity alone. Use these four decision axes:

- Explicit Shell support: The installed Shell version should appear in the extension’s compatibility list. “Works on GNOME” without a version is too vague for a dependable choice.
- Recent maintainer activity: Look for releases or updates that track current Shell versions. An old extension can remain useful, but it carries a higher risk during the next upgrade.
- Distribution availability: A package in your distribution’s repository may integrate with system updates and administrator controls, while a user-installed copy may give you faster access to a maintainer’s release. Neither route guarantees compatibility.
- Necessity: Decide whether the feature is important enough to justify ongoing compatibility maintenance. A cosmetic change may not be worth troubleshooting after every major Shell release; an accessibility or workflow feature may be.
Keep only one extension responsible for a particular behavior when possible. Overlapping panel, dock, workspace, or theme extensions can make it harder to identify which component caused a failure, even when each extension is individually compatible.
Deploy machine-wide extensions as an administrator
Administrators can install shared extensions under /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/<uuid>. Newly installed machine-wide extensions are disabled by default. This default prevents a new system-wide component from changing every user’s desktop without an explicit policy decision.
Set the default enabled list with dconf
GNOME’s administration procedure uses a dconf profile and database. The exact database filename can follow your distribution’s policy; the important setting is the org.gnome.shell key named enabled-extensions. A typical setup is:
- Create or edit the system dconf profile so it includes a user database and a system database, for example:
user-db:user system-db:local - Create a system database fragment for the Shell defaults, such as:
[org/gnome/shell] enabled-extensions=['[email protected]','[email protected]']Replace the example values with the exact UUIDs of the extensions you installed.
- Run
dconf updateas required by your distribution so the profile and database are compiled. - Have users start a new session or otherwise follow your organization’s session-change procedure before evaluating the default.
The UUIDs in the list must match the directory names and extension metadata exactly. A spelling or punctuation error means the intended extension will not be enabled.
GNOME notes an important limitation: this default-setting procedure does not currently provide a way to enable additional extensions for users who are already logged in. Plan the change for new sessions or communicate the required session transition to affected users.
Recommended Free Tools
Enforce an extension policy with dconf locks
Defaults are not enforcement. A user may be able to change an unlocked setting, so managed environments that require a fixed extension set should use dconf locks. GNOME documents locks for these paths:
Best Value
/org/gnome/shell/enabled-extensions/org/gnome/shell/disabled-extensions/org/gnome/shell/development-tools
A lock file in the system dconf database contains the paths, one per line. For example:
/org/gnome/shell/enabled-extensions
/org/gnome/shell/disabled-extensions
/org/gnome/shell/development-tools
After placing the lock file in the database’s locks directory, run dconf update and apply the organization’s session policy. With enabled-extensions locked, installed extensions not present in the administrator’s enabled list will not be loaded. This is stronger than merely setting a default because users cannot replace the list with their own choices.
Locking development-tools also prevents users from opening Looking Glass to disable extensions that the organization requires. Use that control deliberately: it removes a useful troubleshooting path for users and should be paired with an administrator-supported recovery process.
Prepare for a GNOME upgrade
Handle a major GNOME upgrade as an extension compatibility project. Before upgrading, make an inventory containing each extension’s UUID, purpose, installation scope, current version, and supported Shell versions. Mark extensions that are essential and identify a fallback workflow for each one.
- Check every listing against the target Shell version, not only the version currently installed.
- Pay particular attention to the GNOME 45 module-system boundary. Pre-45 and 45-plus builds are not automatically interchangeable.
- Remove or disable extensions that have no maintained version for the target release.
- For machine-wide deployments, stage the new extension files and update the dconf enabled list only after confirming the UUIDs.
- After the upgrade, enable extensions individually and test the desktop feature each one provides.
- Keep a record of the last known-good extension and Shell versions so you can explain a regression to your distribution or the extension maintainer.
Do not assume that an extension’s presence in the official listing, its popularity, or its previous success on an older release proves that it will work after the upgrade.
A practical maintenance policy
For a personal computer, review extensions whenever GNOME Shell changes, when the Extensions app offers an update, and whenever desktop behavior changes unexpectedly. Keep the enabled set small, remove abandoned components, and disable before diagnosing. For a managed fleet, separate installation from authorization: place approved files in the machine-wide directory, publish only approved UUIDs through enabled-extensions, and lock the relevant keys when users must not override the policy.
The result is a predictable control model: compatibility information determines whether an extension should run, the Extensions app handles ordinary user maintenance, Looking Glass helps diagnose failures, and dconf determines what managed users are allowed to load.
