To keep Gemini Live running after you switch apps or lock an Android phone, enable the Google app’s Live with Gemini notification channel. To let an already-started conversation continue after locking, also enable Gemini on lock screen in Gemini settings. You must unlock the phone to start a new Live session.
These settings affect audio Live differently from camera and screen sharing. Camera sharing stops when you leave Gemini or lock the screen, while screen sharing stops on hold or lock and must be started again. The steps below separate each permission and interruption so you can choose the behavior you actually want.

What you need before changing the settings
- An Android phone or tablet with the Gemini mobile app, or Gemini configured as the mobile assistant.
- A current version of the Google app and a signed-in Gemini Apps account. Google releases some features gradually, so labels and availability can differ by account, Android version, manufacturer, or region.
- A device that is not using Gemini only through the web app or Google Messages. Google’s Android help says Live is provided in the Gemini mobile experience, not those two surfaces.
Menu names can move between Android releases and manufacturer interfaces. Use the setting names in bold as your landmarks even if an extra menu appears on your phone.

Google’s Android instruction is explicit: “To use Gemini Live in the background or while your device is locked, Live with Gemini notifications must be on.” The notification is the mechanism that keeps Live available outside the foreground app.

- Open Android Settings.
- Go to Notifications, then App notifications.
- Select Google.
- If Google notifications are broadly disabled, turn on All Google Notifications first.
- Find the channel named Live with Gemini and enable it.
Some phones place channel controls behind an additional “notification categories” or “notification channels” screen. Do not stop at the top-level Google notification switch: the specific Live with Gemini channel must be enabled.
After changing the channel, start Live while the phone is unlocked and test by leaving the Gemini app. If Live still pauses, check the lock-screen setting and the interruption type described below before changing unrelated settings or reinstalling the app.
Allow an active conversation to continue when the phone is locked
Notifications make background and lock-screen use possible, but they do not by themselves decide what happens to an active conversation when the display locks. In Gemini settings, locate Gemini on lock screen and turn it on if you want an already-running audio session to continue after locking.
If Gemini on lock screen is off, locking the device places Live on hold. Unlock the phone and resume the session. A locked device cannot be used to start a brand-new Live conversation; unlock it first, open Gemini, and then tap the Live control.
| Situation | Required setting or action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Start a new Live session | Unlock the phone, open Gemini, and start Live | A locked screen cannot initiate Live |
| Continue audio Live while Gemini is not foregrounded | Enable Live with Gemini notifications | The audio conversation can remain available in the background |
| Continue an active audio session after locking | Enable notifications and Gemini on lock screen | The active session can continue while locked |
| Lock with Gemini on lock screen disabled | Unlock and resume Live | Locking puts Live on hold |
These rules concern an existing session. They do not grant a locked phone permission to open Gemini or begin listening without an unlocked start.
Understand what happens to camera and screen sharing
Live’s visual modes have stricter interruption rules than audio. Treat camera sharing and screen sharing as separate permissions, not as extensions of the notification setting.
| Mode | What it shares | Events that stop or interrupt it | What happens when you resume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio only | Your microphone conversation with Gemini | Lock behavior depends on Gemini on lock screen; hold and end have their normal controls | Resume from hold to continue the session |
| Camera | Live video from the device camera | Hold, leaving the Gemini app, or locking the screen | Resuming from hold turns the camera back on; returning to the app or unlocking does not automatically restart camera sharing |
| Screen | The full device screen | Hold or screen lock | Screen sharing does not restart automatically; begin sharing again |
Screen sharing also requires Gemini notifications to be enabled. If the screen-share control is unavailable or fails immediately, verify the Live with Gemini channel before troubleshooting the display capture permission.
Camera sharing: the resume rule that is easy to miss
Camera sharing is automatically restored only when you resume from Hold. If you leave Gemini and later return, or unlock after a lock-screen interruption, Live resumes without automatically turning the camera back on. Use the in-chat camera control to share video again.

Screen sharing: expect to restart it
Screen sharing deliberately ends when you hold Live or lock the phone. Unlocking or resuming the conversation does not silently recapture the display. Start the screen-share flow again and confirm the Android capture prompt when it appears. This prevents a previously visible screen from being exposed after an interruption.
Use Hold, Mute, and End correctly
The three controls have different privacy and session consequences:
- Hold pauses Live and turns off the microphone. Resuming returns to the same session. Hold also stops camera and screen sharing; only camera sharing is automatically restored when you resume, while screen sharing must be started again.
- Mute turns off the microphone without ending the Live session. Google says camera or screen sharing can continue while muted, so mute is not a substitute for stopping visual sharing.
- End exits Live. Google makes the conversation transcript available after the session ends. A previous chat can be reopened and started again in Live mode.
For a private pause where no voice should be captured but the session context should remain, use Mute. For a complete stop, use End and separately turn off camera or screen sharing if either is active.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a repeatable test instead of guessing
When diagnosing a failure, change one variable at a time. First verify the Google app’s general notifications and the specific Live with Gemini channel. Then start a new audio session while unlocked. Leave Gemini without selecting Hold and see whether the conversation remains available. Next test a screen lock with Gemini on lock screen enabled, and repeat with it disabled if you need to confirm the difference.
Run camera and screen tests separately. Turn on the camera, press Hold, and resume: the camera should return. Instead, leave Gemini or lock the display, return, and check that the camera is off until you turn it on again. For screen sharing, hold or lock the phone, return to the chat, and start sharing again. This small matrix identifies whether the problem is a notification channel, lock-screen continuation, or the documented behavior of a visual mode.
| Test | Expected result | Likely setting to inspect if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Leave Gemini during audio Live | Audio remains available in the background | Live with Gemini channel |
| Lock during active audio Live | Continues only when lock-screen continuation is allowed | Gemini on lock screen and notifications |
| Resume after Hold with camera on | Camera returns automatically | Confirm the event was Hold, not leaving or locking |
| Return after locking during camera mode | Camera remains off until manually enabled | Use the in-chat camera control |
| Return after locking during screen share | Screen share remains off | Restart screen sharing and accept the capture prompt |
Fix the most common background and lock-screen failures
Live stops as soon as you leave Gemini
- Confirm the Google app’s Live with Gemini notification channel is on, not merely the general Google notification switch.
- Start a fresh Live session while the device is unlocked.
- Leave Gemini without pressing Hold and test audio in another app.
If audio works but camera video disappears, that is expected: camera sharing stops when the Gemini app is left and must be enabled again after you return.
Live pauses when you lock the phone
Check both independent settings: Live with Gemini notifications and Gemini on lock screen. With notifications enabled but lock-screen continuation disabled, locking still places Live on hold. Unlock the phone and resume.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The screen-share image vanished after locking
Screen sharing is designed to stop on lock and does not resume automatically. Unlock the device, return to the Live chat, and start screen sharing again. Keep notifications enabled because Google lists them as a prerequisite.
The camera does not come back after unlocking
Unlocking does not automatically restart camera sharing. Reopen the Live chat and turn the camera control on. Automatic camera restoration applies only to a resume from Hold.
I cannot start Live from the lock screen
This is expected behavior. Unlock the phone before opening Gemini and starting Live. The lock-screen setting controls continuation of an existing session, not creation of a new one.
The setting names or controls are missing
Check that you are using the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as the Android mobile assistant, that the Google app is current, and that you are signed in to Gemini Apps. Google notes that updates are released gradually, so a feature may not yet be available on a particular account or device. Manufacturer notification menus can also hide channel controls under a secondary categories screen.
The screen-sharing option is present but cannot start
Confirm that Live with Gemini is enabled at the channel level. Screen sharing requires Gemini notifications, so enabling only a camera or microphone permission is not enough. Start again from an unlocked phone and accept the Android screen-capture confirmation. If the session was held or the phone was locked, use the sharing control again rather than expecting the old capture to resume.
I enabled notifications but still hear no audio
Check whether you muted the session or placed it on Hold. Mute turns off the microphone while leaving Live active; Hold pauses Live and also turns off the microphone. Neither is the same as End. Resume from Hold or unmute before treating the behavior as a notification failure.
Do not confuse Live notifications with notification access
Android has another permission involving notifications that serves a different purpose. Live with Gemini is a Google app notification channel used to keep Gemini Live available in the background or on the lock screen. Notification access is a separate Android permission for Device assistance to read or reply to notifications from other apps.
Grant notification access only if you want Android Device assistance to inspect or respond to device notifications. It is not required merely to keep an audio Live conversation running. Device assistance is Android-only, and Google notes that some actions require additional settings or permissions. Look for the notification-access control in your Android Device assistance settings; the exact path varies by Android version and manufacturer.
Recommended Free Tools
| Permission | Purpose | When to enable it |
|---|---|---|
| Live with Gemini notification channel | Keeps Gemini Live usable in the background and supports lock-screen use | Enable for background audio, lock-screen continuation, and screen sharing |
| Gemini on lock screen | Determines whether an active Live session can continue after locking | Enable when you want an existing audio session to continue while locked |
| Android notification access for Device assistance | Lets Gemini read or reply to device notifications | Enable only when that notification-assistance function is wanted |
What the microphone, camera, and screen permissions expose
Microphone access lets Gemini hear the Live conversation. Mute cuts that audio input while preserving the session. Camera sharing sends live camera content only while the camera mode is on, subject to the stop rules above. Screen sharing sends the full device display, so anything visible—including messages, account details, or codes—can be included until sharing is stopped.

Before starting camera or screen sharing, close sensitive apps and remove private information from view. Google’s Live guidance also tells users to respect other people’s privacy and ask permission before recording or including them in a Live chat. Treat a room, meeting, document, or notification as potentially shareable whenever the camera or full-screen mode is active.
Use Live safely in common situations
Walking or commuting with audio only
- Unlock the phone and start Live.
- Confirm Live with Gemini notifications are enabled.
- Enable Gemini on lock screen if you need the conversation to continue after the display locks.
- Use Mute when you need silence without ending the session.
Audio-only use avoids the automatic camera and screen interruptions and exposes less visual information.
Showing Gemini an object or scene
- Start Live while unlocked.
- Turn on camera sharing in the Live chat.
- Use Hold when you need a temporary pause; camera sharing returns when you resume from Hold.
- If you leave Gemini or lock the phone, turn camera sharing on again after returning.
Getting help with an app on your screen
- Enable the Live with Gemini notification channel first.
- Start Live while unlocked and choose screen sharing.
- Check the full-screen preview for passwords, private messages, or payment information before confirming.
- If you hold Live or lock the phone, restart screen sharing manually when you return.
- Use End when finished so the session closes and its transcript becomes available.
Switching between audio and visual modes
Decide which mode you need before leaving the app. Audio can remain available in the background when notifications are configured. Camera mode is tied to the Gemini app being open, and screen mode is tied to the current unlocked display-capture session. Switching away from the visual mode or encountering a lock interruption means you should check the in-chat indicator and explicitly re-enable the camera or screen.

iPhone and iPad: what is documented
Google’s iPhone and iPad help describes starting Live by opening the Gemini mobile app, tapping Live or swiping left, and following the first-use prompts. It documents Hold and End as microphone controls. The returned iOS guidance does not provide the Android Live with Gemini notification-channel or Gemini on lock screen procedures.
Do not assume that enabling an Android notification channel or lock-screen setting creates the same behavior on iOS. Use the controls and permissions shown in the iOS Gemini app, and treat platform availability as subject to Google’s gradual feature rollout.
Privacy checks before ending a session
Ending Live makes the chat transcript available, so review what was discussed if the device or account is shared. During a session, remember that mute affects the microphone only: it does not hide camera footage or the full screen. Hold is broader for a temporary pause because it turns off the microphone and stops both visual modes, but screen sharing still has to be restarted manually afterward.
Ask before showing another person through the camera or including their voice in a Live chat. Before screen sharing, scan the whole display rather than just the app you intend to demonstrate; Android screen sharing can expose notifications, account information, messages, and one-time codes that appear elsewhere on the screen.

Why does Gemini Live stop when I lock my phone?
Enable the Google app’s Live with Gemini notification channel and check Gemini on lock screen. If the latter is off, locking places Live on hold. Camera and screen sharing stop on lock regardless and require their documented restart steps.
Does muting stop camera or screen sharing?
No. Mute turns off the microphone while the Live session remains active. Camera or screen sharing can continue, so use the camera or screen controls when you need to stop visual sharing.
Why did my camera not return after I unlocked the phone?
Camera sharing automatically returns only after resuming from Hold. Leaving Gemini or locking the phone turns it off, and you must enable the camera again in the Live chat.
Why is screen sharing gone after I resume Live?
Hold and screen lock stop screen sharing. It does not restart automatically; return to the Live chat and begin screen sharing again. Gemini notifications must also be enabled.
Do I need notification access for background Live?
No. Background Live uses the Live with Gemini notification channel. Notification access is a separate Android Device assistance permission for reading or replying to device notifications.
Can I use these Android settings on an iPhone or iPad?
Do not assume so. Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions describe starting Live and using Hold or End but do not document the Android notification channel or lock-screen continuation setting.
What happens when I end a Live conversation?
End exits Live, and Google says the chat transcript becomes available. You can reopen a previous chat and start it again in Live mode.
The Bottom Line
For Android background audio, enable the Google app’s Live with Gemini notification channel and start Live while unlocked. Add Gemini on lock screen when an active audio session must continue after locking. Hold, mute, camera, and screen sharing are separate controls: camera returns only from Hold, while screen sharing must be restarted after Hold or lock. Keep Android notification access separate, and grant it only for Device assistance features that read or reply to notifications.
