On a computer, open Chrome’s three-dot More menu and go to Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome. In Permissions, turn Let Gemini browse for you on or off. The same panel lists Sites Gemini can sign you in to; select the close control beside a site to remove its automatic sign-in permission. This does not delete the site connection from your Google Account or remove a saved password from Google Password Manager.
Auto browse is an agent feature, not ordinary search. Gemini can navigate pages, use sites where you are already signed in, and carry out a multi-step task after you review its proposed plan. Because it can share information with websites and can make mistakes, treat the Permissions panel and each task review as security controls, not as optional setup screens.

What the Gemini in Chrome permission controls
The Let Gemini browse for you switch controls whether Gemini can operate a browser session on your behalf. When enabled, Gemini may open pages, compare information, fill forms, make reservations, search for deals, or perform other multi-step work. It does not mean every Gemini chat automatically browses: Gemini still presents a task plan and waits for you to start it.

The separate site list controls automatic sign-in assistance. A site shown under Sites Gemini can sign you in to has permission for Gemini to use Chrome’s supported sign-in mechanisms when a task needs that account. Removing a site from this list blocks that automatic sign-in permission while leaving the underlying account relationship intact.

What revoking a site permission does not do
- It does not disconnect the site from your Google Account.
- It does not delete credentials saved in Google Password Manager.
- It does not close your account on the third-party site.
- It does not prevent you from signing in manually.
Google states that Password Manager does not share your passwords with Gemini or with other sites. The permission concerns the sign-in action, not disclosure of the stored password itself.
Who can use auto browse
Google’s documented eligibility conditions are narrow. A user must meet all of the following conditions, and Google is rolling the feature out gradually:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be located in the United States.
- Use an eligible opt-in for Gemini in Chrome.
- Run the latest Chrome version.
- Set the device language to English.
- Be signed in to Chrome with a personal Google Account.
- Have a Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscription.
- Set Chrome Safe Browsing to Standard or Enhanced.
Google’s Chrome product information summarizes the commercial gate as auto browse being available only to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers in the US, subject to the detailed conditions and gradual rollout. Work or school accounts need administrator enablement, so an organization can prevent the feature from appearing even when the browser and subscription otherwise qualify.
Auto browse is not available in Incognito, in Live chats, or in Gemini in Chrome on iPhone and iPad. A qualifying account may therefore see the feature on a computer but not on a mobile device or in a private window.

Turn Gemini auto browse on or off
- Open Chrome on your computer and select the three-dot More menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Select AI innovations. If the category is not immediately visible, open the menu inside the Settings page and choose AI innovations from there.
- Open Gemini in Chrome.
- Find the Permissions section.
- Switch Let Gemini browse for you on to allow auto browse or off to stop Gemini from starting browser tasks for you.
The first time Gemini needs to browse on a device, Chrome may show a consent prompt. Google’s wording is: “The first time Gemini needs to browse the web for you on a device, Chrome asks you for permission to connect Chrome auto browse to Gemini.” Accepting that prompt is separate from deciding whether a particular task should start.
What happens when you turn it off
Turning the switch off prevents new auto-browse work from being authorized through that setting. If a task is already running, use Stop in the Gemini interface or close the task tab so that the active session ends. Review any page that was already opened or any form that was already filled; disabling the switch is not a way to undo a completed purchase, message, booking, or data change.
Remove a website’s automatic sign-in access
- Open Chrome’s More menu and choose Settings.
- Go to AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome.
- Scroll to Permissions.
- Under Sites Gemini can sign you in to, locate the website.
- Select the close or remove control beside that site.
Removing the entry is an individual revocation. Repeat the action for each site you no longer want Gemini to sign in to automatically. You can still visit the site and complete its login yourself, including with a password saved in Google Password Manager.

Auto browse is designed for tasks that require several page visits or decisions rather than one answer. A typical session follows this sequence:

- In Chrome, select Ask Gemini at the top of the browser.
- Describe the outcome you want, such as comparing products, finding a deal, booking travel, making a reservation, or scheduling an appointment.
- Read Gemini’s proposed plan. The plan can identify the pages it expects to use and the personal information it intends to use.
- Check the sites, data, and final action. Select Start Task only when the plan matches your intent.
- When Gemini needs you, respond to the browser notification or select Check your task.
- On the task tab, choose Take over task and complete the personal step, such as entering a verification code or approving a sign-in.
- After your step, choose Resume to let Gemini continue or Give back task to keep control yourself.
- To end the work, select Stop in Gemini or close the task tab.
A remote browser session may continue after you close your device, but sign-in steps can pause until you take over. That pause is expected: credentials, verification prompts, and other personal approvals commonly require your direct participation.
What Gemini can access and share
Auto browse can use a broad range of websites even when the related apps are not connected to Gemini Apps. In a local Chrome session, Gemini can reach the same sites you can reach, including sites where you are already signed in. The practical boundary is therefore your existing browser access, not just a list of services that you explicitly linked to Gemini.
When acting for you, Gemini may send information needed by a third-party site. Depending on the task, that can include your name, contact details, files, preferences, and other sensitive information. Review the plan before starting and avoid granting a task more context than it needs.

Google documents confirmation or takeover points for starting a task, sending communications, modifying data, submitting web forms, scheduling events, accessing highly sensitive financial or health information, and signing in. The exact prompt can vary by site and task, so do not assume that a familiar page is harmless merely because you have used it before.

Why review matters
Gemini can choose which sites to use and can misunderstand an instruction. Possible failures include following a page’s instructions incorrectly, clicking the wrong control, ordering the wrong item, changing the wrong record, or reporting that a task is complete when it is not. Before accepting a final result, inspect the destination, quantities, dates, recipients, totals, and confirmation status yourself.

Daily limits and task capacity
Google documents plan-based daily limits of up to 20 multi-step requests per day with Google AI Pro and up to 200 with Google AI Ultra. These are maximum plan limits, not a guarantee that every account will receive the full amount, and Google may change them as the rollout evolves. Google also documents limits on simultaneous tasks without specifying a single universal number in the feature guidance.

Why the Gemini in Chrome setting is missing
If AI innovations or Gemini in Chrome does not appear, check the conditions in a deliberate order rather than changing random browser flags.
Check the browser and account
- Update Chrome to the latest available version.
- Confirm that you are using a personal Google Account, not a work or school account that lacks administrator enablement.
- Verify that the account is signed in to Chrome itself, not only to a separate Google website tab.
Check region, language, and plan
- Auto browse is currently limited to eligible users in the United States.
- Set the device language to English.
- Confirm that the account has Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra and that the opt-in is eligible.
Check browser safety and context
- Set Chrome Safe Browsing to Standard or Enhanced.
- Leave Incognito and open a normal Chrome window.
- Use a computer; Gemini in Chrome auto browse is not currently available on iPhone or iPad.
- Remember that Live chats do not support auto browse.
Allow for gradual rollout
Even after every condition is satisfied, Google says the feature is rolling out gradually. The absence of the setting can therefore mean that access has not reached the account yet, rather than that Chrome is misconfigured. Work or school users should ask their administrator whether Gemini in Chrome has been enabled for the organization.
Safer operating practices
- Use the narrowest task description that achieves the goal; do not include unrelated personal details.
- Read the proposed plan before selecting Start Task, especially the listed pages and personal information.
- Prefer manual completion for payments, health records, financial accounts, identity verification, irreversible data changes, and messages sent to other people.
- Take over when a site requests a one-time code, a security key, a biometric check, or another personal approval.
- After Gemini reports completion, inspect the site’s confirmation page, sent-items folder, booking record, or change history.
- Remove automatic sign-in permission for sites you no longer use by deleting them from the Permissions list.
- Stop the task and close its tab if the plan changes, the site looks unfamiliar, or Gemini begins following unexpected instructions.
Common situations and the correct response
Gemini asks to sign in to a site
Pause and verify the domain, account, and reason for access. If you do not want automatic sign-in, take over the task and sign in manually, or remove the site from Sites Gemini can sign you in to before trying again.
A task is waiting after you close the computer
Open the browser notification or select Check your task. A remote session can continue without the device, but a sign-in or other personal step may remain paused until you choose Take over task.
Gemini changed the wrong thing
Stop the task immediately. Use the website’s own undo, cancellation, account-history, or support process; turning off auto browse only controls future authorization and does not reverse a completed action.
The site is not listed for automatic sign-in
That does not necessarily prevent the task from using the site. Gemini can browse many sites through your local browser, while the list specifically governs supported automatic sign-in permission. You may need to take over and sign in yourself.
Permission checklist
- Open Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome → Permissions.
- Decide whether Let Gemini browse for you should be on for this account and device.
- Review every entry under Sites Gemini can sign you in to.
- Remove sites that should no longer receive automatic sign-in permission.
- Before each task, inspect the plan, pages, data, and final action.
- Use Take over task for personal approvals and Stop when the task is no longer correct.
The setting gives you a clear on/off control, but responsible use also depends on reviewing each plan and checking the result. Auto browse is most useful when convenience outweighs the risk of delegated clicks and data sharing; for high-stakes actions, manual browsing remains the more controllable choice.
