If you are struggling to stay awake, protect safety first: stop driving and pause any hazardous task until you are alert. Then look at sleep opportunity, sleep timing, medicines, schedule demands and possible sleep disorders. Occasional tiredness after a short night may improve with recovery sleep, but frequent, unexplained or unrefreshing sleepiness deserves a clinician’s evaluation.
Daytime sleepiness is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can reflect insufficient sleep, an out-of-sync body clock, night or rotating shifts, medication effects, sleep apnea, narcolepsy or another medical problem. The right response depends on the cause.

What excessive daytime sleepiness means
Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is an unusually strong tendency to doze or fall asleep during the day, including when you intend to be awake. It is different from ordinary fatigue: fatigue is low energy, while sleepiness is a drive to sleep. A person can experience both.

Sleepiness can interfere with concentration, learning, memory, reaction time, work quality and judgment. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s 2025 position statement puts the clinical priority plainly: “The evaluation and management of sleepiness is essential for patient safety and patient-centered care.”

Do not treat EDS as proof that you are lazy or simply need more willpower. A schedule that leaves too little time for sleep is common, but persistent symptoms can signal a condition that needs treatment.
What to do when you are sleepy right now
- Stop safety-sensitive activity. Do not drive, cycle in traffic, operate machinery, climb, supervise a dangerous process or perform another task that requires continuous attention while you are struggling to stay awake.
- Tell a responsible person. At work, notify a supervisor or safety lead. At school, tell a teacher, nurse, counselor or parent. Ask for a safe place to rest and an alternative to the hazardous task.
- Use a short-term alertness measure only as a bridge. Moving to a well-lit area, standing briefly, drinking water or taking a permitted short break may help you remain engaged for a limited time. These steps do not replace sleep or medical evaluation.
- Arrange a safer way home. Use a sober, alert driver or another transport option. If you are still sleepy, wait and sleep before driving.
Sleepiness can persist after a break or caffeinated drink. A person who still feels drowsy should not assume that effort has restored safe reaction time.
How do I stay awake in class?
The most reliable classroom strategy is to prevent sleep loss before class. Review whether your bedtime, wake time and commute leave enough opportunity for regular, restorative sleep. If you repeatedly sleep longer on weekends or days off, that pattern can indicate that school-night sleep is insufficient and that the shift in timing is disrupting your sleep-wake rhythm.
Before school
- Keep sleep and wake times as consistent as practical across the week rather than making large weekend changes.
- Prepare clothes, meals and materials earlier so late-night tasks do not reduce sleep opportunity.
- Keep a brief sleep diary for several days: bedtime, estimated time to fall asleep, awakenings, final wake time, naps, caffeine, medicines and how alert you felt in class.
During class
- Sit where participation is expected, take handwritten or typed notes and ask questions. Active engagement can temporarily reduce passive dozing.
- Use an authorized short break to stand or walk if your teacher permits it.
- Tell the teacher privately if you are repeatedly nodding off. A health problem, medication effect or unsafe commute may be involved; embarrassment should not prevent help.
When the schedule itself is the problem
Children ages 6–12 are advised to get 9–12 hours of sleep per 24 hours, and adolescents ages 13–18 are advised to get 8–10 hours, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2026). Early start times can conflict with adolescent circadian timing. CDC identifies sleep education and later school start times as school-level supports. A CDC page published in 2026 reports that 75% of students were not getting adequate sleep based on 2025 data; that statistic is presented as the page reports it and does not establish why each student was sleep-deprived.
Why am I so tired at work even after sleeping?
“I slept” does not always mean “I had enough restorative sleep at the right time.” Consider these possibilities before assuming one explanation:

| Possible contributor | Clues to record | Why the response differs |
|---|---|---|
| Insufficient sleep | Short nights, late bedtime, long commute, caregiving, studying or regularly sleeping in on days off | The priority is creating enough protected sleep opportunity and a stable schedule. |
| Circadian misalignment | Sleepiness at a predictable clock time, difficulty sleeping when required, large differences between workdays and free days | Timing, light exposure and schedule design matter; treatment should be individualized. |
| Night or rotating shifts | Symptoms begin after schedule changes or are worst during overnight work | Shift-work disorder and ordinary sleep restriction can overlap; a clinician must distinguish them. |
| Sleep apnea or another disrupted-sleep disorder | Unrefreshing sleep, loud snoring or breathing concerns reported by another person, repeated awakenings or morning symptoms | Testing may be needed; treating the underlying breathing or movement problem is different from simply adding caffeine. |
| Narcolepsy or another hypersomnolence condition | Irresistible sleep episodes despite trying to stay awake, unusual dream-like experiences around sleep or other distinctive symptoms | A sleep specialist may need targeted testing and prescription treatment. |
| Medicines, alcohol or supplements | Sleepiness began after starting, stopping or changing a product, or follows alcohol use | A prescriber or pharmacist should review the full list. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. |
| Other medical or mental-health conditions | Sleepiness accompanies other persistent symptoms or a major health change | Blood tests or an examination may identify a contributor that sleep tips cannot correct. |
These clues are not a self-diagnosis. They help you describe a pattern so a clinician can choose an appropriate evaluation.
Check whether your sleep opportunity is realistic
Start with the time available for sleep, not only the time you spend in bed. Add work or school hours, commuting, meals, caregiving, homework and preparation. If the total schedule leaves too little time for sleep, alertness problems are an expected biological response.

Look for timing instability
Write down sleep and wake times on work or school days and on days off. Large changes can create “social jet lag.” NHLBI notes that sleeping in on days off may signal insufficient sleep and can further disrupt the sleep-wake rhythm. A stable schedule is not always possible, especially for shift workers, but documenting the variation shows where the barriers are.
Use a sleep diary, not a gadget as a diagnosis
A paper or digital diary is enough. Record timing, awakenings, naps, caffeine, alcohol, medicines and daytime alertness. NHLBI provides a sleep-diary resource; buying a commercial journal is unnecessary. Consumer sleep trackers may estimate patterns, but they are not established as necessary for evaluating unexplained sleepiness and cannot diagnose sleep apnea or narcolepsy.
What can I do about falling asleep during the day?
Build recovery sleep into the plan
If recent short nights explain the symptom, protect additional sleep over several nights rather than relying on one long weekend sleep. Keep the bedroom suitable for sleep, limit avoidable late-night tasks and address noise, light or temperature problems. If you cannot create enough sleep opportunity because of work, school or caregiving, discuss schedule changes with the person who controls those demands.

Use naps carefully
NHLBI says naps can provide a short-term boost in alertness and performance, but they do not provide all the benefits of nighttime sleep. A nap can also make it harder to sleep at the planned bedtime for some people. If you nap, plan it so you have time to become fully alert before driving, operating equipment or returning to a safety-sensitive duty.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Caffeine can promote wakefulness for some people, but its effect varies and late use can reduce nighttime sleep, creating a cycle of sleepiness. Do not use caffeine to override a level of drowsiness that makes driving or hazardous work unsafe. Supplements and “energy” products are not universal treatments and can interact with medicines or medical conditions.
Night-shift and rotating-shift workers
Working at night asks the body to stay alert when its circadian system is promoting sleep and to sleep during daylight when the system promotes wakefulness. Rotating schedules add another timing challenge. Keep a written record of shift times, sleep episodes, naps, caffeine and near-misses at work.
Light exposure, melatonin timing, naps and prescription medicines may be considered for some diagnosed shift-work problems, but the correct timing and safety profile depend on the person and schedule. Do not copy a protocol from another worker or take melatonin or a wakefulness medicine without clinical advice.
A 2025 American Academy of Sleep Medicine guideline excerpt gives a conditional, very-low-certainty recommendation for adults with diagnosed shift-work disorder and excessive sleepiness to combine a nap and caffeine before a night shift. This narrow recommendation is not a general treatment for all sleepy students or workers. Even when such a plan is used, time may still be needed for sleepiness to resolve before driving or other safety-sensitive behavior.

Is it safe to drive when I am sleepy?
No—if you are fighting sleep, driving is not a safe activity. Fatigue can slow reaction time, reduce attention, impair short-term memory and weaken judgment. Opening a window, turning up music or promising yourself that you will “push through” does not reliably restore these abilities.
Pull over in a legal, safe location and arrange an alert driver or other transport. If a nap and time away from the task do not leave you clearly alert, do not resume driving. Employers and schools should not pressure a visibly sleepy person to drive or perform hazardous work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I see a doctor if I am tired all the time?
Arrange a medical discussion if sleepiness is frequent, unexplained, worsening, causes unplanned dozing, leaves you unrefreshed despite adequate opportunity, interferes with school or work, or makes it difficult to adapt to shifts. Also seek advice if another person notices breathing pauses or if a medicine change coincided with the symptom.
NHLBI recommends discussing frequent sleepiness, waking unrefreshed or difficulty adapting to shift work with a doctor. The purpose is not to obtain a stimulant automatically; it is to identify and treat the cause while protecting safety.

- Bring one to two weeks of sleep-diary entries if possible.
- List prescribed medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements, caffeine, alcohol and recreational substances, including approximate timing.
- Describe work or school hours, commuting, naps, snoring or witnessed breathing changes, and episodes when you could not stay awake.
- State whether symptoms occur only on certain shifts, in quiet settings, while reading, in meetings or during active tasks.
- Bring a trusted person’s observations when appropriate; bed-partner reports can clarify nighttime breathing or movements.
How clinicians investigate persistent sleepiness
The evaluation depends on the suspected cause. A clinician may review your sleep history and schedule, perform an examination and assess medicines and other health conditions. NHLBI describes several possible tools:
Best Value
- Sleep studies: testing may investigate sleep apnea, sleep-related movement disorders or narcolepsy.
- Activity monitoring: a wearable activity monitor may track sleep-wake patterns over several days or weeks.
- Blood tests: testing may look for contributors such as thyroid problems or other medical conditions.
- Specialist assessment: persistent or unusual hypersomnolence may require referral to sleep medicine.
No single test is appropriate for everyone. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or change a treatment before speaking with the prescriber; the medicine itself, the underlying condition or withdrawal can affect alertness.
Treatment depends on the cause
| Finding | Possible clinician-directed approaches | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Insufficient or irregular sleep | Schedule changes, protected sleep time, behavioral strategies and treatment of barriers | A supplement or stimulant is not a substitute for adequate sleep. |
| Sleep apnea | Breathing devices such as CPAP, other devices, behavioral measures or surgery, depending on the diagnosis | Daytime caffeine does not treat interrupted breathing during sleep. |
| Narcolepsy or another hypersomnolence disorder | Clinician-prescribed wakefulness medicine, behavioral planning and safety measures when indicated | Self-medicating with someone else’s medicine is unsafe and can mask symptoms. |
| Shift-work disorder or circadian disorder | Individualized schedule, light, nap, melatonin or medication strategies with monitoring | A plan for one shift pattern may be wrong for another person or rotation. |
| Medicine or substance effect | Prescriber-led dose, timing or medication review | Never discontinue a prescribed treatment without medical advice. |
NHLBI notes that caffeine sometimes promotes wakefulness, while antihistamine sleep aids can be unsafe for some people. Melatonin supplements can vary in dose and purity, and supplements may cause risks or interactions. These facts are reasons to obtain advice, not invitations to self-treat unexplained sleepiness.
What teachers, managers and schools can do
A report of persistent sleepiness should be treated as a possible health and safety issue, not a character flaw. Supportive steps include:
