Rogue Trader does not use one universal companion-approval bar that you can fill or drain. Companions respond to your biography, doctrines, conviction choices, personal quests, and important story conditions. Some decisions are checked only when a particular companion is present, while recruitment and late-game events can depend on earlier actions. The safest way to keep the roster intact is to treat party management as a story-planning task: pursue personal quests, maintain access to every companion, bring the relevant character into major conversations, and verify your conviction path before irreversible chapter transitions.
Exact departure thresholds for every companion are not documented in a complete, current table. You should therefore avoid guides that promise a single approval number guarantees loyalty. The procedures below reflect the systems and version changes that are documented, while clearly separating confirmed mechanics from guide-based examples.

The short answer: manage reactions, not a score
When players ask how to “raise approval” or stop a companion from leaving, they are usually looking for a hidden relationship meter. The available documentation does not establish such a universal numeric meter in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. Instead, companions react through several overlapping systems:

- Biography and doctrine reactivity: Owlcat has described work on making companions respond to the Rogue Trader’s biography, doctrines, and convictions.
- Personal quests and story conditions: Companion quests can influence individual endings and determine whether later scenes are available.
- Party-presence checks: Some dialogue entries and choices require a named companion to be in the active party.
- Recruitment timing: Companions join at different points, and optional, secret, or downloadable-content characters can have additional requirements.
These systems mean a companion can approve of one decision yet still be unavailable for another scene, or react to a later story condition that has little to do with a simple “relationship score.” Keep records of your choices and quests instead of trying to farm an invisible statistic.

What drives companion reactions
Biography and doctrines
Owlcat’s beta-feedback commentary said that one of the frequent complaints during development concerned insufficient reactivity from non-player characters and companions to the Rogue Trader’s biography, doctrines, and convictions. That statement is historical development context, not a complete list of current triggers. It does establish the intended design direction: the character you created and the ideological path you follow are meant to matter in conversations.
Read a companion’s response as information about that character’s priorities. A harsh reaction does not automatically mean the companion will leave, and a friendly line does not prove that every future condition has been satisfied. Record the decision, the speaker’s reaction, and any new quest or objective that appears.
Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical choices
The three conviction labels are broad ideological tracks. Dogmatic choices emphasize strict authority and orthodoxy; Iconoclast choices prioritize humane or reform-minded solutions; Heretical choices reject the established order. The game can award conviction points for dialogue, projects, and other decisions, but the exact value and availability of those points have changed between versions.
Do not treat a single conversation as proof that you have permanently locked a companion outcome. Conviction-sensitive content can be distributed across multiple acts, and the relevant condition may be a combination of points, prior actions, and quest state.
Personal quests and endings
Companion quests are not optional flavor if your goal is to keep the party together. The companion roster reference states that these quests can influence individual endings. A quest can also preserve access to later conversations by resolving a character’s immediate problem before a chapter transition. Check the journal for companion objectives and make a deliberate decision about which quests must be completed before you advance the main plot.

Why Update 1.3 changed old conviction advice
Owlcat’s Update 1.3 notes, published on December 10, 2024, describe a “Major increase in availability of conviction points.” The notes also say that many Act III and Act IV dialogue choices and projects awarding Dogmatic, Heretical, or Iconoclast points received increased values.
This matters when you follow an older walkthrough. A route that once required saving every point may now reach a conviction threshold earlier, while a guide that lists old point totals can understate what the current version awards. Update 1.3 also says that choices already selected and projects already completed would not immediately grant the newly increased points. That was intended to prevent the patch from involuntarily changing a character’s conviction after the player had made earlier decisions.
Use old guides for quest order or broad decision context, not as authoritative arithmetic. If a guide gives a precise total, check the game’s current version and watch the conviction notification shown after each eligible choice.
A practical routine for keeping companions available
- Choose a general ideological direction. Decide whether your character is mainly Dogmatic, Iconoclast, Heretical, or deliberately mixed. You do not need to obey one label in every conversation, but knowing your intended direction helps you recognize when a choice may have long-term consequences.
- Review the roster at every chapter transition. Note who is recruited, who is temporarily unavailable, and which characters are optional or tied to downloadable content. Recruitment is phased across the prologue and Chapters 1–3, so do not assume a missing character is permanently lost until you have checked the current chapter’s recruitment opportunities.
- Track every companion quest. Keep personal objectives visible in the journal. If a quest sends you to a new location, resolve its immediate steps before starting a main-story mission that announces a major transition or point of no return.
- Bring the relevant companion before a major conversation. A choice list used by players marks several entries with party-presence requirements. Examples include entries involving Abelard, Pasqal, Cassia, and Jae. Before opening a scene connected to one of them, swap that character into the active party rather than leaving them on the Voidship.
- Make a manual save before irreversible decisions. Save before a conviction choice, a companion quest conclusion, a major project, or a chapter-ending mission. Use separate named saves so you can identify the decision later; quick-save cycling alone makes it difficult to recover a specific branch.
- Read the result, not just the choice label. After a decision, check for a companion reaction, a new journal entry, a conviction-point notification, or a change in the quest objective. A silent result is not proof that nothing happened, but a visible quest update tells you what to monitor next.
- Resolve personal quests before the late Chapter 4 approach. The available recruitment guide describes one or two final companions as potentially recruitable shortly before the end of Chapter 4, depending on conviction and previous actions. Confirm your requirements before crossing the game’s point of no return.
- Keep a reserve roster. You do not need every companion in every battle. Retain access to characters whose quests or reactions may matter, and rotate them into the active party when a quest or dialogue entry names them.
When the active party matters
One of the most practical mistakes is assuming that a companion reacts to every decision from the Voidship. The documented choice appendix explicitly marks several choices with party-presence requirements. This does not prove that every reaction requires physical presence, but it does show that some checks are tied to the active party.
| Companion | What is documented | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Abelard | Listed in examples of choices carrying a party-presence requirement. | Bring him for scenes connected to his quest or to an entry that names him; do not rely on him being recruited but inactive. |
| Pasqal | Listed in examples of choices carrying a party-presence requirement. | Check the journal and the choice context before entering a technical, factional, or personal-quest scene involving him. |
| Cassia | Listed in examples of choices carrying a party-presence requirement. | Include her when a dialogue entry or quest objective identifies her as a participant. |
| Jae | Listed in examples of choices carrying a party-presence requirement. | Rotate her into the party before beginning a scene that references her or her personal objectives. |
The table is a set of documented examples, not an exhaustive trigger database. If a scene concerns any companion’s personal quest, the conservative approach is to include that companion, make a manual save, and then proceed.

Recruitment is spread across the campaign
Prologue and Chapters 1–3
The roster reference describes companions joining during the prologue and Chapters 1–3. Some are part of the expected progression, while others are optional. A character not appearing in your initial group may simply require a later location, conversation, or quest. Check your current chapter and unresolved objectives before concluding that recruitment is impossible.
Optional, secret, and downloadable-content companions
Optional and secret characters can follow different rules from the core roster. Downloadable-content companions also depend on the relevant content being installed and available in your edition. Treat those characters as separate recruitment projects: verify the content, find the triggering quest or location, and keep a save before accepting a decision that could close the route.
Late Chapter 4 recruitment: spoiler warning
Spoiler warning: the available walkthrough describes one or two final companions as potentially recruitable shortly before the end of Chapter 4. Recruitment depends on your conviction and previous actions, and the opportunity is close to a point of no return. The source supports the timing and conditional nature of the event, but not a complete decision tree for every route.
If you want those characters, stop before the Chapter 4 point of no return, review your conviction profile, confirm earlier companion-related actions, and make a separate save. Do not assume that reaching the location is enough; the required state may have been established several scenes earlier.
Build a complementary party instead of chasing one required lineup
Keeping the party together does not mean using every companion simultaneously. A stronger approach is to maintain a bench that covers different tactical jobs and then rotate characters for story scenes. The roster reference gives these role examples:

| Companion | Documented role | Practical roster use |
|---|---|---|
| Abelard | Melee-oriented Warrior | Provides a front-line option when your current group lacks a durable melee presence. |
| Argenta | Ranged Soldier | Adds sustained ranged damage when a mission rewards distance or line-of-sight control. |
| Cassia | Support Officer | Offers support capabilities when the group needs assistance rather than another damage dealer. |
| Other companions | Distinct abilities and roles | Rotate them according to encounter demands and personal-quest requirements rather than treating one fixed party as mandatory. |
Role labels are starting points, not strict prescriptions. The game’s encounter design, your character’s build, equipment, and difficulty setting determine whether a role is valuable in a particular mission. Keep at least one reliable front-line option, one source of ranged pressure, and one support solution available, then select the remaining slots around the quest and the enemies.
Respecs help, but they do not erase companion identity
The companion reference describes respec access through the High Factorum on the Voidship Bridge. It also states that a companion can be respecced only back to the level at which that character originally joined, with key build choices locked. In practical terms, respec is a correction tool, not unrestricted character creation.
Use the High Factorum to repair a role that no longer fits your roster, correct an early leveling mistake, or make a reserve companion functional after the party changes. Do not dismiss a character because the initial build looks inconvenient while assuming a full rebuild will solve everything; the joining level and locked choices limit how far you can redesign that companion.

A negative line appears after a choice
Read the entire conversation log and check whether the game awarded conviction points or opened a quest. A negative reaction may be a character expressing disagreement rather than a departure trigger. Keep the save, continue the companion’s personal objectives, and watch for a later condition instead of immediately reloading every unfavorable sentence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA companion is not reacting
First verify that the character is recruited and in the active party. Some documented choices require party presence. If the scene is part of a personal quest, review the journal for a prerequisite location, conversation, or earlier objective. Lack of a voiced comment is not proof that a decision has no consequence.

An older guide gives different conviction totals
Compare its date with Update 1.3, published December 10, 2024. The patch increased the availability and, in many Act III and IV cases, the value of conviction awards. Previously completed choices and projects were not retroactively re-awarded. Use the current in-game notifications as the authority for your save.
You are worried that someone will leave
There is no verified, complete companion-by-companion departure-threshold table in the available documentation. Avoid treating a forum number as universal. Keep companions’ personal quests moving, include them in named party-presence scenes, save before major conviction decisions, and avoid the Chapter 4 point of no return until you have checked any late recruitment or companion objective you care about.
You missed a late recruit
Reload the manual save from before the relevant Chapter 4 transition if you have one. If you do not, inspect the current quest journal and conviction profile to determine whether the opportunity is still open. The documented walkthrough confirms that late recruitment is conditional, not that every missed route can be reopened after the point of no return.
Common mistakes that split a roster
- Searching for a single approval percentage: the documented system is a combination of reactions, convictions, quests, and conditions.
- Leaving a quest companion on the Voidship: some choices check active-party presence.
- Following obsolete point totals: Update 1.3 changed conviction availability and many Act III and IV awards.
- Ignoring personal quests until the finale: those quests can affect individual endings and may require earlier access.
- Assuming every companion is available immediately: recruitment is phased, and some characters are optional, secret, or content-dependent.
- Crossing the Chapter 4 point of no return casually: late recruitment opportunities can depend on prior conviction and actions.
- Expecting a full respec: High Factorum respecs are limited by the companion’s original joining level and locked build choices.
Chapter-by-chapter checklist
Before leaving the prologue
- Identify which companions are already recruited and which are expected later.
- Choose a broad conviction direction so future decisions are intentional.
- Create a manual save before the first major irreversible choice.
During Chapters 1–2
- Check the journal after every companion conversation.
- Rotate companions into the active party for their personal scenes.
- Build a complementary roster rather than leveling only one fixed group.
During Chapter 3
- Expect more conviction-sensitive choices and projects.
- Do not copy old point totals without checking the current version.
- Resolve personal objectives before accepting a mission that signals a major transition.
During Chapter 4
- Review unresolved companion quests and optional recruitment paths.
- Bring named companions to dialogue scenes that may have presence checks.
- Make a separate save before the point of no return.
- Verify conviction and previous actions if you are pursuing a late secret companion.
The most reliable party-management mindset is simple: keep access, keep records, and treat every major decision as part of a companion’s longer story rather than as a one-time approval test. That approach accommodates the game’s reactive dialogue, changing conviction awards, party-presence checks, phased recruitment, and quest-dependent endings without pretending that an undocumented universal score controls the entire roster.
