To stop Windows 10 from collecting new Activity history, open Start > Settings > Privacy > Activity history and clear Store my activity history on this device. That stops new local records and disables Timeline features that depend on them, but it does not erase history already saved. Select Clear under Clear activity history to remove existing device records, and use the Microsoft privacy dashboard separately for Microsoft-account activity.
The controls are separate: local storage, Timeline account visibility, older cloud-synced history and other telemetry each have different switches or deletion paths. The instructions below apply to Windows 10; Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, so labels and cloud behavior may change as legacy features are retired.

What Windows 10 Activity history is
Microsoft describes Activity history as a record of what you do on a device, including the apps and services you use, files you open and websites you browse. Windows 10 can use that record to populate Timeline, the interface that shows current and past activities so you can resume work.

The record is primarily managed on the device, while older Windows 10 releases also offered an option to send activity history to Microsoft. These are not the same as every form of browser history, diagnostic data, location history or app telemetry; those have their own privacy controls.

Stop Windows 10 from collecting new local activity
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Choose Activity history.
- Clear the checkbox for Store my activity history on this device.
On older Windows 10 builds, the equivalent setting was labeled Let Windows collect my activities from this PC. The wording changed, but the purpose is the same: when it is cleared, Windows stops storing new Activity history locally.
What turning off local storage changes
Timeline and any other on-device feature that relies on Activity history can no longer use newly collected records. This is a privacy trade-off rather than a system-wide privacy switch: it does not automatically clear existing records, erase Microsoft-account data, or disable every kind of Windows or app telemetry.
Clear Activity history already stored on the PC
Use the Activity history settings page
Return to Start > Settings > Privacy > Activity history. Under Clear activity history, select Clear. This removes the Activity history stored on that Windows 10 device. If you want to prevent new records after clearing, also leave Store my activity history on this device turned off; clearing alone does not change the collection setting.

Remove individual Timeline items
Open Timeline and right-click an activity card, then choose Remove. To remove everything shown for a date, right-click the day heading and choose Clear all from Earlier Today or the equivalent command for that date. These commands let you delete selected activities without clearing the entire history from Settings.
Hide an account in Timeline without deleting its data
The Activity history page may show Show activities from accounts. Turn off an account when you do not want its activities displayed in Timeline. This is a visibility filter, not a deletion command: Microsoft states that disabling an account there does not remove that account’s data from the device.

Understand Microsoft-account and cloud history
Cloud handling changed in Windows 10 version 22H2. Microsoft deprecated the Send my activity history to Microsoft option with the January 23, 2024, KB5034203 update. You may still see documentation or screenshots from earlier releases that include this switch.

If that older option had been enabled, Microsoft says you can use Clear activity history to delete previously stored cloud data. Otherwise, the old cloud activity is automatically deleted within 30 days after the data was last synchronized. The 30-day period refers to the last sync, not necessarily the date you turn off local collection.

They do not provide a promise that every Microsoft-associated record has vanished. A signed-in user can open the Microsoft privacy dashboard to review and delete Microsoft-associated apps-and-services activity, including deletion by individual day. Use that dashboard for account-level records that are separate from the local Timeline database.
What happens to Timeline and browser history
Timeline depends on local Activity history. After you clear the storage switch, Timeline cannot provide the same on-device list of past activities. Clearing existing history also removes the cards that were based on those records.

Microsoft Edge browsing history is a separate feature. Turning off Activity history does not erase Edge history or prevent Edge from retaining its own browsing records. To manage that data, use Edge’s history controls and any Microsoft-account synchronization settings you have enabled.

Activity history settings are limited in scope. They do not automatically remove:
- Browser history held by Edge or another browser.
- Diagnostic and optional diagnostic data controlled on the Windows privacy or diagnostics pages.
- Location history and location permissions.
- Data collected inside individual applications or services.
- Microsoft-account activity that appears separately on the privacy dashboard.
Review each relevant privacy page and service account when your goal is a broader data cleanup. Clearing Activity history is one operation, not a universal Windows deletion command.

Choose the privacy setting that matches your goal

Troubleshoot missing or ineffective controls
The label is different
Windows 10 builds use either Store my activity history on this device or the older Let Windows collect my activities from this PC wording. Look for the collection checkbox on Privacy > Activity history; an older label does not indicate a different type of data.
Timeline still shows something after you turned the switch off
Turning off collection does not delete the existing database. Select Clear under Clear activity history, then remove any remaining individual Timeline cards or dates. Also check whether the visible item is browser history or an application feature rather than Activity history.
An account disappears but its data is still present
That is expected when you use Show activities from accounts. The switch controls Timeline visibility only. Use the Settings Clear command for local deletion and the privacy dashboard for Microsoft-account records.

The cloud option is absent
On Windows 10 22H2 updated with KB5034203 on January 23, 2024, Microsoft deprecated Send my activity history to Microsoft. Its absence on a current installation is therefore normal. Older cloud data is subject to Microsoft’s deletion behavior described above.
The device is managed by an organization
Work or school policies can restrict privacy settings or determine which account appears in Activity history. If a checkbox is unavailable or repeatedly resets, contact the organization’s administrator; do not assume that a disabled control means the underlying data was deleted.

Windows 10 support context
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The Activity history page may continue to function on an existing installation, but Microsoft can retire or alter legacy Timeline and cloud behavior. Keep the operating system patched as far as updates remain available, and verify current Microsoft guidance if a label or deletion result differs from these steps.
