To stop your information being used to improve Airbnb’s AI features, open Menu > Account settings > Privacy > Data privacy and turn off Help improve AI-powered features (the checkmark means the setting is on). Separately review your phone’s location permission for Airbnb, edit the city shown on your public profile, manage third-party sharing and cookies, and check trip-map and profile visibility.
What each Airbnb privacy control changes
These settings govern different data, recipients and scopes. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

Turn off data sharing for Airbnb’s AI features
Airbnb’s AI help guidance identifies a specific opt-out for data sharing used to improve AI-powered features. This is the setting to use when your goal is to stop contributing personal information to AI-model development or improvement; it is not the same as disabling your phone’s location service or hiding your profile city.

Desktop instructions
- Sign in to Airbnb on the web.
- Open Menu, then choose Account settings.
- Select Privacy.
- In Data privacy, find Help improve AI-powered features.
- Clear the checkmark or switch it off, then leave the page only after the new state is visible.
Airbnb documents the same destination in shorter form as Account > Privacy > Data privacy > Help improve AI-powered features. The wording can differ slightly between the full desktop site and other account views, but “Data privacy” and the AI-features label identify the relevant control.

What this switch covers
Airbnb says personalization may infer preferences and interests from your location, prior searches, listings you viewed and past bookings. Turning off “Help improve AI-powered features” stops the sharing choice associated with improving AI-powered features. It does not erase your account history, remove bookings, or act as a universal opt-out from every form of personalization or analytics. Those activities have their own privacy, cookie and sharing controls.
If you want to object in writing
Airbnb’s privacy guidance says you can email [email protected] to object to the use of personal information for AI-model development and improvement. Include the account email address and describe the AI-development objection clearly, but do not send passwords, payment-card numbers or identity documents unless Airbnb specifically requests an appropriate verification process.
When the toggle appears to change back
- Refresh the Privacy page and check whether the checkmark remains cleared.
- Make sure you are signed in to the intended Airbnb account; a browser can contain more than one account session.
- Try the desktop account-settings path rather than relying on an old saved link or an in-app screen.
- If the control is missing or cannot be saved, record the date, account region and the exact label shown, then contact Airbnb through its privacy-support route or the DPO email above.
Stop or reduce Airbnb’s access to device location
Airbnb’s Privacy Policy, last updated February 5, 2026, says it may obtain precise or approximate location from an IP address, a mobile-device GPS signal or information you disclose. Which type is available depends partly on your device settings and permissions. The policy also says location can be collected when the app is not in use if your device grants the necessary access.
Review the permission on your phone or tablet
- Open your device’s system Settings.
- Go to the privacy or permissions area, then open Location or Location Services.
- Choose the app-permissions list and select Airbnb.
- Choose the least-privileged option that meets your needs, such as denying location or allowing it only while the app is in use. Available labels differ by operating-system version.
- If your device offers a separate precise-location switch, review it independently of the general location permission.
- Return to Airbnb and test the functions you need, such as searching a destination. If a feature requires location, enter a city manually instead of restoring continuous access.
There is no single Airbnb account switch that replaces this device permission. A change to the public “Where I live” city also does not revoke GPS or IP-based collection. Treat the device permission as a separate, device-specific control.

Understand what denying location does not remove
Revoking GPS access does not make your IP address anonymous, and it does not delete location you previously disclosed in your profile, searches or messages. Airbnb’s policy describes several possible location sources, so an app can have no GPS permission and still process an approximate location derived from the network or information you supplied. Use the relevant account and cookie controls as well when your objective is to reduce those other sources.
Background-access check
If your operating system offers “always,” “allow in background” or a similar choice, inspect it specifically. Airbnb says collection can continue while the app is not in use when the device permission allows that behavior. Setting access to “while using” or denying it removes that background permission where the operating system supports those choices.
Change the city shown on your Airbnb profile
Your profile city is a presentation choice, not a substitute for a location permission. Airbnb says it displays the location you add to your profile, never the mailing or full address for the listing or account. The city shown can therefore differ from the country Airbnb automatically determines as your residence.

- Open your Airbnb account and go to Profile.
- Select Edit.
- Find Where I live.
- Enter a new city, or remove the existing city if you do not want one displayed.
- Choose Save and reopen the profile to verify the displayed result.
What changing it affects
- It changes the city associated with the public profile field.
- It does not change a listing’s address, your mailing address, GPS permission, IP-derived location or the country Airbnb determines automatically.
- It does not retroactively alter locations already present in bookings, reviews or messages.
If the old city remains after saving, confirm that the edit actually completed, reload the profile, and check that you are viewing the same account whose settings you changed. A browser cache or an account switch can make an earlier profile view appear unchanged.

Control third-party sharing and non-essential cookies
Use Airbnb’s Privacy and sharing area
Account settings include a Privacy and sharing area for third-party-sharing choices, personal-data requests and account deletion. Open that area and review each available sharing choice rather than assuming the AI toggle covers advertising or analytics. Airbnb says it may share some data, including location or what you viewed, with authorized partners for advertising or analytics, while stating that it does not sell personal information to third parties.
The audience here is different from AI-model improvement: the recipients can be authorized partners, and the data may concern viewed content or location used for advertising or measurement. Read the description beside each switch because the available options depend on your jurisdiction.
U.S. third-party-sharing opt-out
Airbnb provides a dedicated third-party-sharing opt-out for users in the United States. If you are in the U.S., use that opt-out in addition to the account Privacy and sharing controls. A U.S.-specific choice should not be presented as a worldwide guarantee; regional privacy rights and interfaces differ.

Where cookie banners are required, use the banner’s controls to accept or reject non-essential cookies. Essential cookies may remain necessary for sign-in, security or core functions, while the optional categories are the ones relevant to advertising and analytics choices. If you dismissed the banner, look for Airbnb’s privacy or cookie-preference link to reopen it.
Logged-out versus signed-in scope
Airbnb warns that an opt-out made while logged out may apply only to that browser or device. It may not persist after the session closes or after you sign in. For a durable account choice, make the decision while signed in and then check the same browser and any other device you use. A browser-level cookie choice does not automatically become an account-wide preference.

Manage travel-map and trip visibility
Travel-map sharing is separate from profile location and device permissions. To review it, open Account settings > Privacy settings > Trip visibility. Airbnb lets you preview and change how trip information is shown under the available choices.
Airbnb’s stated limit is explicit: We never share your exact location during a trip, regardless of your sharing choice.
That assurance concerns exact in-trip location. It does not mean that every location-related data source, such as an approximate IP location or a city you entered on your profile, is hidden from every audience.
Check the result
- Open the Trip visibility screen and note the current selection before changing it.
- Choose the narrower audience that matches your purpose.
- Use Airbnb’s preview, when shown, to inspect what another person would see.
- Save the change and revisit the screen to confirm that the selection persisted.
Limit who can see your profile
Profile visibility controls exposure of the profile itself, including the city you chose in “Where I live.” They do not alter device location collection or AI-data sharing.
- Open Menu > Account settings > Privacy.
- Select Profile visibility.
- Choose the audience option that fits your needs.
- Use Airbnb’s preview thumbnails to inspect both the full and limited views offered by the interface.
- Save the choice and verify it after returning to the Privacy page.
Previewing matters because a visibility choice can change the audience for several profile fields at once. If you need the city hidden, remove it under “Where I live” as well as narrowing profile visibility; either action alone addresses a different part of the exposure.
Choose controls by privacy goal

A practical privacy audit and troubleshooting sequence
Run this sequence whenever you create a new account, change phones or sign in on a new browser. It avoids treating a successful change in one area as proof that every other area changed too.
- Start with the account-level AI choice. Confirm the AI-features checkmark is off if you do not want data shared for AI improvement.
- Check the device. Review Airbnb’s location permission on every phone or tablet where the app is installed, including background access.
- Inspect the profile. Remove or update “Where I live,” then use Profile visibility preview to see the audience that can still view profile details.
- Review partner and cookie choices. Make the decision while signed in, then revisit the browser’s cookie preference if you also browse while logged out.
- Review trip visibility. Confirm the travel-map audience and verify the saved state after changing it.
- Document unresolved behavior. Note the account region, device, operating-system version, browser or app version, setting label and time of the change before contacting Airbnb. Those details help distinguish an account preference from a device-permission or session problem.
Common mistaken assumptions
- “Turning off AI personalization stops all location use.” No. AI improvement, device location and partner-sharing controls are separate.
- “Removing my profile city disables GPS.” No. It changes only the profile field.
- “Rejecting cookies covers my signed-in account everywhere.” Not necessarily. Airbnb says logged-out choices can be limited to one browser or device and may not survive a later login.
- “Trip visibility reveals my exact current position.” Airbnb states that exact location during a trip is never shared, regardless of the trip-visibility choice.
- “No GPS permission means Airbnb has no location information.” The policy describes IP-based and user-disclosed location as additional sources.
When a control is unavailable or unclear
Airbnb can present different controls by country, account state and interface version. A U.S. third-party-sharing option, for example, may not appear for an account outside the United States; cookie controls may appear only where a banner is required. A mobile app may use a different navigation label from the documented desktop route.
Do not infer that a missing switch means the underlying data category does not exist. Check the desktop Privacy and Privacy and sharing pages, the operating system’s Airbnb permission, and any cookie-preference center. If none provides the choice you need, contact Airbnb privacy support or email [email protected] with a precise request and your region. Keep a copy of the request and the setting state you observed.
For account deletion or a personal-data request, use the options in Privacy and sharing. Those requests are different from toggling AI, location, cookie or visibility settings and should be treated as a separate decision about your account data.
