How to Manage a BeamMP Server: Admins, Bans and Commands

Manage a BeamMP server by running the current ServerConfig.toml configuration, installing a server-side Lua moderation plugin, and administering players with identifier-based permissions. The baseline BeamBase plugin provides player listings, identifiers, chat controls, kick and ban commands; community plugins can add roles, unbans, IP bans and temporary sanctions.

What you need before administering a server

Prepare these items before inviting players:

• A Windows or Linux machine running the BeamMP-Server build.
• A dedicated server folder and a predictable working directory.
• A valid BeamMP authentication key when the server will be publicly listed.
• A configured listening port between 1024 and 65535. The port must be unique on that host.
• A server-side plugin such as BeamBase for the documented baseline commands.
• Administrative access to the machine, firewall and (for home hosting) router.

Keep the authentication key private. Treat moderation plugins as code with server access: install only versions you can inspect and maintain, and back up their data before upgrades.

Install the server and generate the current configuration

1. Create a server directory, such as BeamMP-Server, and place the BeamMP-Server executable in it.
2. Open a terminal or command prompt in that directory and launch the executable once. The first run creates ServerConfig.toml, log files and a Resources directory in the process working directory.
3. Stop the process after generation, then open ServerConfig.toml in a text editor that preserves plain text.
4. Set the general options, save the file, and start the executable from the same working directory.
5. Install server plugins under Resources/Server. A plugin normally has its own folder containing one or more Lua files.

The former Server.cfg format is no longer used. It is incompatible with TOML, so renaming an old file or copying its syntax into the new configuration will not work.

Configure ServerConfig.toml correctly

ServerConfig.toml is TOML, not an INI file. Preserve section names, equals signs, quotation marks and Boolean values exactly as TOML expects. A representative general configuration includes the following keys; your release may expose additional options.

Change one setting at a time while diagnosing a startup problem. A malformed quote, a missing equals sign or a value copied from the obsolete configuration format can prevent the server from starting; the console and log normally identify the line to correct.

Use environment variables when you need repeatable deployments

From server release 3.2.0, environment variables can override general settings. Convert a PascalCase key to uppercase and prefix it with BEAMMP_: Port becomes BEAMMP_PORT, Name becomes BEAMMP_NAME, and AuthKey becomes BEAMMP_AUTH_KEY. This is useful for service managers and containers because the secret and port can be supplied outside the file. Run ./BeamMP-Server --help to see command-line options supported by your build.

Find the real working directory and resource folders

The executable’s physical location does not determine where files are created. BeamMP documentation specifies that the process working directory controls the locations of ServerConfig.toml, server logs and Resources. If a service manager starts the binary from another directory, you may be editing a configuration that the running process never reads.

1. Stop the server.
2. Identify the directory from which the service, shortcut or terminal launches it.
3. Look there for ServerConfig.toml, logs and Resources.
4. Start the server with that directory set as the working directory, or deliberately move the files and update the service definition.

Server Lua plugins belong in Resources/Server. A typical layout is Resources/Server/BeamBase/main.lua. Top-level Lua files are hot-reloaded when changed, but client resources are ZIP files loaded when the server starts. Restart after installing or updating a client resource and after any plugin whose README does not explicitly support hot reload.

Add administrators with stable BeamMP identifiers

Do not authorize staff solely by display name: players can change names, use look-alikes or collide with another name. BeamBase keeps an admins table of BeamMP identifier type/value pairs and uses a checkAdmin function to compare a connecting player’s identifiers against that allowlist.

1. Start the server with BeamBase installed.
2. Join with the account that should become an administrator.
3. Run /id or /identifiers to display your identifier values. An optional player ID lets an existing administrator inspect another connected player.
4. Copy the identifier type and value into the plugin’s administrator table using the syntax required by that plugin version.
5. Save the Lua file and reload or restart the server as documented by the plugin.
6. Test a protected command from the new account and from a normal account. A non-admin should receive an “Insufficient Permissions” response.

Use /players to map the temporary player ID shown in commands to a current name. Player IDs can change after reconnects; identifiers are the durable value for an allowlist.

BeamBase command reference

The following commands are documented by the BeamBase implementation. They are not guaranteed to exist, or to use the same arguments, in another moderation plugin.

Run /help in the live server rather than relying on a copied command list after an update. Third-party plugins may change target syntax, add role checks or reserve commands for a named role.

Kick and ban a player safely

Use a kick for a reversible incident

1. Run /players and confirm the target’s current ID and name.
2. Use /kick <id> <reason>, keeping the reason factual and short.
3. Record the time, player identifier and reason in your private moderation log if the incident may recur.

BeamBase calls the server drop function, announces the kick and includes the supplied reason. A kick does not add the player’s identifiers to the ban list.

Use a ban when reconnection should be blocked

1. Confirm the target with /players and, where appropriate, inspect identifiers with /id <id> or /identifiers <id>.
2. Run /ban <id> <reason>.
3. Verify the player is disconnected and that the ban entry was written.
4. Keep a dated record of the reason and staff member who applied it.

BeamBase obtains the target’s identifiers, refuses the action if the target is a recognized administrator, drops the player, appends the identifiers to its bans file, stores them in memory and broadcasts the ban. Identifier matching is more resistant to display-name changes than name-only moderation.

Locate the bans file and recover from a mistaken ban

Ban storage is implementation-specific. In the cited BeamBase source, initialization builds a path under Resources/Server/<plugin>/bans.txt, while the ban handler also opens bans.txt for append. This means the effective path depends on the plugin version and working directory. Do not assume that every moderation plugin uses the same filename or folder.

1. Stop the server before editing moderation data.
2. Check the running plugin’s README and source for its exact bans path.
3. Resolve that path relative to the process working directory, not merely the executable’s folder.
4. Back up the file before changing it.
5. Remove only the exact identifier entry for the player who should return, preserving line endings and the file’s format.
6. Start the server and test with that account.

The BeamBase command set does not document an unban command. If you require in-game unbanning, install a moderation plugin that explicitly supports it rather than inventing a command. Nickel, for example, documents unban <targetname>, but that command belongs to Nickel and is not a universal BeamMP feature.

Optional role and moderation plugins

Community plugins can provide a broader policy model than the baseline admin table. Nickel documents commands including ban, banip, tempban, kick, mute, tempmute and unban. It also documents /grantrole administrator <username> and /listroles.

These are plugin-specific commands, not official BeamMP commands. Before deploying one, check:

• Which identifier types it stores and whether an IP address is retained.
• Whether temporary bans survive a restart and how expiration times are represented.
• Where bans, roles and audit data are written.
• Whether its command parser accepts player IDs, names or both.
• Its BeamMP compatibility, maintenance history and release notes.
• Whether its permissions prevent one administrator from silently granting excessive access.

Do not run two plugins that both intercept the same command unless their documentation explains the interaction. Conflicting handlers can produce duplicate messages, inconsistent bans or a permission check being bypassed.

Make a home-hosted public server reachable

Home hosting has no hosting bill, but a public server must be reachable from the internet. Forward the configured BeamMP port on your router to the host’s private address and allow it through the host firewall. BeamMP’s FAQ specifically says to check both TCP and UDP forwarding when players see connection errors 10060, 10061 or 10038.

1. Give the server computer a stable local address, preferably with a DHCP reservation.
2. Set the same port in ServerConfig.toml and in the router’s forwarding rule.
3. Create forwarding rules for both TCP and UDP to that address.
4. Allow the executable or port through the operating system firewall.
5. Set Private = false only after local connectivity works and the authentication key is valid.
6. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A test from inside the same LAN may succeed even when internet forwarding is broken.

Carrier-grade NAT, double NAT, changing public addresses and ISP restrictions can prevent inbound connections even when the router rule looks correct. In those cases, request a public address, place the forwarding rule on the upstream router, or use a VPS.

Choose between a home host and a VPS

BeamMP describes home hosting as free and VPS hosting as easier and more secure. The trade-off is not simply price: it is who handles routing, uptime, patching and exposure to the internet.

For Linux, follow BeamMP’s recommendation not to run the server as root, with sudo, or as your personal account. Create a dedicated service account, give it ownership of only the server directory, and run the process through a service manager with an explicit working directory. This also prevents the working-directory mistake that causes configuration and logs to appear in unexpected locations.

Troubleshoot the failures players report most often

The server is not visible in the list

• Confirm Private = false.
• Verify that AuthKey is present and valid.
• Check that the configured port is unique and within the documented range.
• Read the startup log for authentication, binding or configuration errors.
• Confirm that the process is using the directory containing the file you edited.

Players receive error 10060, 10061 or 10038

• Check TCP and UDP forwarding for the configured port.
• Confirm the host firewall allows both protocols.
• Test from outside the home network.
• Investigate double NAT or carrier-grade NAT with the ISP.
• Verify that the server is actually listening on the expected interface and port.

An admin command returns “Insufficient Permissions”

• Run /id and compare the account’s identifier type and value with the plugin’s admins table.
• Check for whitespace, quotation or case errors in the Lua file.
• Reload or restart the plugin after editing.
• Ensure another plugin is not replacing the command or permission handler.

A ban does not survive a restart

• Confirm the plugin can write to its resource directory.
• Locate the actual bans file relative to the process working directory.
• Check the log for file-permission or parsing errors.
• Make sure you are testing the same plugin instance and configuration after restart.

The server starts but a resource is missing

• Place server Lua files under Resources/Server, not in a client-only ZIP.
• Check the folder and entry-file names expected by the plugin.
• Restart for client ZIP resources, because they are loaded at server start.
• Read the console for a Lua syntax error or dependency that loads earlier in the startup sequence.

Operate the server securely over time

• Back up ServerConfig.toml, plugin folders and bans data before changing versions.
• Keep the authentication key out of public repositories, screenshots and chat.
• Use identifier-based administration and grant the smallest role needed.
• Review the admin table and role list after staff changes.
• Retain only the chat and identifier data you need for moderation, and protect those files.
• Apply BeamMP and plugin updates in a staging copy first; confirm command syntax and data-file behavior before updating a busy server.
• Watch disk usage when chat or debug logging is enabled.
• Document the working directory, listening port, plugin versions and recovery location so another operator can restore the service.

With the current TOML configuration, a known working directory, identifier-based admins and a tested network path, routine BeamMP moderation becomes predictable: list the player, verify the identifier, apply the least severe command that fits the incident, and preserve the relevant record.
