Open the video in the YouTube Android app, switch the player to full screen, and spread two fingers across the video. The image enlarges to use more of the unfolded Galaxy Z Fold display. Pinch inward to restore the original framing. This works only when the video and display meet YouTube’s aspect-ratio requirements; zooming can crop the picture, and it cannot remove black bars encoded into the video.
Make YouTube fill more of the unfolded screen
The quickest method is a two-finger spread on a full-screen YouTube video. YouTube’s Android help describes pinch-out zoom as available when the device aspect ratio is greater than 16:9. A Galaxy Z Fold’s inner display is wider than a conventional phone when unfolded, so compatible videos can be enlarged beyond their original fit.

- Open the YouTube app on your Galaxy Z Fold and start the video.
- Tap the player’s full-screen button.
- Turn the Fold horizontally if YouTube has not already switched to landscape full-screen playback.
- Place two fingers on the video and spread them apart. The picture should enlarge and occupy more of the inner display.
- To return to the original video size, place two fingers on the enlarged picture and pinch inward.
Samsung Support describes this feature as allowing YouTube to use pinch zooming to completely fill the screen. “Completely” refers to using more of the available display area; it does not guarantee that every video will reach every edge on every Fold model.

Before you try the gesture
Use the unfolded inner display rather than the narrow cover display if your goal is the largest possible YouTube picture. Make sure the video is actually playing in the YouTube app, not merely visible as a thumbnail or in a browser page. The gesture acts on the player image, so a paused video is fine, but both fingers must land inside the picture.

Full-screen controls can disappear while the video is playing. Tap once on the picture to reveal them, then select the player’s full-screen icon. YouTube’s Android instructions call for turning the device horizontally for landscape full-screen viewing. Auto-rotate settings, the current orientation, and the app version can affect whether that rotation happens automatically.
Do not start by spreading two fingers on the comments, title, recommendation list, or another part of the watch page. On the page, the same movement can be interpreted as scrolling or another touch command. Enter full screen first, then perform the gesture on the image itself.
What the pinch gesture changes
Pinch-out zoom changes the video’s framing rather than changing the source file. The player magnifies the existing image, which means some of the original frame can move outside the visible area. Faces, subtitles, logos, or action near the edge may be cropped. The amount depends on the video’s shape and the display; Samsung and YouTube do not provide a crop percentage for an unspecified Galaxy Z Fold generation.

Pinch inward reverses the enlargement and restores the original video size. This gives you two practical viewing choices:
| Viewing choice | Screen coverage | Original frame | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original fit | Uses the player’s normal framing | Preserves the source image | You need to see every edge, subtitle, score, or on-screen control |
| Pinch-to-zoom fill | Uses more of the unfolded display | Crops part of the source frame | You prefer a larger picture and can accept losing some edge content |
There is no setting that can enlarge the picture without this framing trade-off. If preserving the complete composition matters, use the original fit and accept the surrounding space. If the central subject is small and edge information is unimportant, zooming can make it easier to watch on the large inner panel.
Why the 16:9 condition matters
YouTube’s Android full-screen instructions state that pinch-out zoom requires a device aspect ratio greater than 16:9. This is a technical shape requirement, not a promise that every uploaded video will fill the screen. It describes when YouTube can offer enlargement beyond the player’s normal fit.
A video can therefore be high quality and still refuse to zoom. Resolution, subscription status, and the popularity of the channel do not change this particular gesture rule. The relevant factors are the relationship between the display and the video’s shape, whether the source already matches the screen, and whether bars are part of the upload.

Why a video may still show bars or empty space
Black bars embedded in the video
Some videos contain black bars as part of the uploaded image. Those bars are not added by the Fold’s display; they are pixels in the video itself. Samsung says pinch zoom cannot remove embedded black bars. Enlarging the player may make the picture bigger while leaving those encoded bars visible.
This commonly matters when a creator exports a video with letterboxing already included. YouTube receives one rectangular image that contains both the active picture and the black areas. A phone gesture cannot separate those pixels or recreate the picture behind them.
The video already matches the screen’s aspect ratio
Samsung says the zoom function cannot be used when the video has the same aspect ratio as the screen. In that situation, a pinch-out gesture may appear to do nothing because there is no compatible extra framing for the player to enlarge.

YouTube’s Android full-screen instructions state that zooming requires an aspect ratio greater than 16:9. The Fold’s generation and software version are not specified here, so the exact threshold relationship can vary with the display configuration and app behavior. A video that does not meet the requirement may remain at its normal fit.
The video’s shape is unusual
Vertical, square, and horizontal uploads are handled differently by YouTube. The player adapts to the source shape rather than forcing every video into a single rectangle. A portrait video can therefore remain tall, while a widescreen video can remain shorter in portrait orientation or leave space when its original framing is preserved.
How YouTube fits different video shapes automatically
Manual pinch-out zoom is separate from YouTube’s normal fitting behavior. YouTube says its Android player adapts to the size and aspect ratio of each video.
- Vertical video: In portrait orientation, the player becomes taller so the upright source can be displayed naturally.
- Square video: The player adjusts to the square frame instead of stretching it into a widescreen shape.
- Horizontal video: The player uses a wider frame; in portrait orientation, YouTube makes the player shorter for widescreen content.
Automatic fitting preserves the source’s proportions. Pinch-out zoom is the optional second step when you want a larger image and are willing to crop its edges. You do not need to change a video’s orientation manually to make YouTube recognize whether it is vertical, square, or horizontal; the player responds to the source it receives.
Use full screen before trying to zoom
The two-finger gesture applies to the video image, not to the surrounding YouTube page. If the player is still embedded in the watch page, the gesture may scroll or interact with the page instead of enlarging the video.

Tap the player’s full-screen control first, then rotate the Fold horizontally if needed. Once the video occupies the full-screen player, place both fingers inside the picture and spread them apart. A slow, deliberate spread is easier to distinguish from a page scroll than a quick one-finger swipe.
If the controls disappear, tap the video once to reveal them again. The exact icon position can vary with the app interface and orientation, but the control is the player’s full-screen command rather than the Fold’s system navigation control.
After zooming, avoid dragging with one finger while checking the result. A one-finger movement can seek through the video or interact with controls. If the picture becomes too large, use two fingers and pinch inward; that returns to the original video size without changing playback position or the uploaded file.
When pinch-to-zoom is the wrong choice
Use the original fit instead of zoom when the video contains information at its edges. This is especially important for presentations, gameplay interfaces, sports scoreboards, subtitles, or news graphics that place text close to the frame boundary.
Use zoom when the priority is a larger central image. The gesture can make a letterboxed or otherwise small-looking picture more immersive, but it cannot reconstruct portions that are cropped or hidden by bars in the source. Pinching back restores the complete original framing without changing the video itself.
For subtitles, check a few seconds after zooming rather than assuming they remain visible. Captions positioned near the lower edge can be among the first details cropped. The same caution applies to logos or score information at the top corners. If those details matter, original fit is the safer choice.
Troubleshoot full-screen or zoom problems
Try the following checks in order. They are troubleshooting options, not mandatory setup steps, and menu names can differ by Galaxy Z Fold model and software version.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Samsung’s Galaxy support guidance recommends checking the internet connection when YouTube playback or full-screen behavior is malfunctioning. A weak or interrupted connection can prevent the player from behaving normally even though the gesture itself is simple. Let the video load, then test full screen again rather than judging the gesture while playback is failing.
2. Update YouTube
Install any available YouTube update, then reopen the video and try full screen and pinch-out again. App changes can affect player controls and gesture behavior. Close and relaunch the app after updating so the new player code is loaded.
3. Clear YouTube’s cache and data
Samsung also suggests clearing the YouTube cache and data as a troubleshooting measure. Use the app-management controls available on your Fold, then launch YouTube again and test a video in full screen. Clearing data can require signing in again or reapplying app preferences, so treat it as a troubleshooting step rather than the first thing to try.
4. Restart the Fold
Restart the device, reopen YouTube, enter full screen, and repeat the two-finger spread. This is useful when the player or display service has become temporarily unresponsive.
5. Check the full-screen-app setting
Open Settings → Display → Full screen apps and make sure YouTube is selected. Samsung lists this check for Galaxy devices when an app is not using the display as expected. The exact wording or location may vary by software version, so use the Settings search field if the menu is not immediately visible.
6. Test another browser or app
Samsung suggests trying YouTube in another browser or app if the problem continues. This can help separate an issue with the YouTube app from a broader display or playback problem. A different player may have different controls, so use this test to isolate the cause, not as proof that every app supports the same pinch gesture.
7. Check whether the limitation is expected
If the video and display have the same aspect ratio, Samsung says zoom is unavailable. If the video has black bars encoded into it, zoom cannot remove them. If the source does not meet YouTube’s greater-than-16:9 requirement, pinch-out may not be offered. These are content or compatibility limits, not necessarily a fault with the Fold.
What to expect across Galaxy Z Fold generations
The question does not identify a particular Fold generation, and the cited Samsung guidance applies to Galaxy phones and tablets generally. Therefore, the gesture described here is the right starting point, but the exact full-screen-app menu, player layout, or response can differ with the device model, One UI release, YouTube version, and region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNo particular Fold generation is required by the instructions, and buying a different phone is not necessary to try the gesture. If the behavior differs on your device, first check the app, display setting, and video-shape limitations above before assuming the inner screen is defective.

Do not infer a guaranteed edge-to-edge result from the Fold name alone. Two Fold models can present the same YouTube control while showing different amounts of the source after zooming because their inner displays and software differ. The documented behavior is the gesture and its limitations, not a fixed crop measurement for every model.

- Pinching on the page instead of the player: Enter full screen first and keep both fingers on the video image.
- Expecting zoom to preserve every edge: Enlarging crops the frame by design.
- Expecting encoded bars to disappear: Bars included in the uploaded video remain.
- Trying to zoom a same-ratio video: Samsung says the gesture cannot be used when the video and screen share the same aspect ratio.
- Assuming every source is eligible: YouTube’s Android guidance sets a greater-than-16:9 condition for pinch-out zoom.
- Ignoring orientation: YouTube’s full-screen instructions call for turning the device horizontally for landscape viewing.
- Confusing automatic fitting with manual zoom: YouTube adapts vertical, square, and horizontal videos automatically; pinch-out is an additional enlargement action.
- Testing only one upload: A gesture that works on one video may appear unavailable on another because the source shape or embedded bars differ.
- Using one finger: One-finger touches can reveal controls or seek; the fill gesture requires two fingers spread apart.
A quick decision guide
- Want every part of the image? Stay with the original fit and do not zoom.
- Want the largest practical picture? Enter landscape full screen and spread two fingers.
- See bars after zooming? Check whether they are embedded in the upload; Samsung says those cannot be removed by this gesture.
- Nothing happens? Check the greater-than-16:9 requirement, whether the video already matches the screen’s aspect ratio, and the troubleshooting steps for the app and display setting.
- Text disappears at the edge? Pinch inward and use original fit so subtitles, scores, and graphics remain visible.
Frequently asked questions
Does this require a special Galaxy Z Fold setting?
No special accessory or replacement part is required. The documented method is handled in the YouTube player: full screen first, then a two-finger spread. Samsung does list the Settings → Display → Full screen apps check as a troubleshooting option when an app is not using the display correctly.
Will pinch-to-zoom remove all black bars?
No. Samsung says bars embedded in the uploaded video cannot be removed by pinch zoom. The gesture can enlarge the image but cannot edit pixels that are part of the source.
Does zooming reduce the video’s quality?
The documented change is magnification and cropping of the existing image. It does not alter the source file. Because the same image is being enlarged, fine details may appear less comfortable to view, but no device-specific quality loss or scaling percentage is specified.
Can I fill the screen without losing any picture?
Not when filling requires enlargement beyond the source framing. Original fit preserves the complete frame; pinch-out uses more display area by cropping some of that frame. Choose between coverage and complete composition.
Why does YouTube make a vertical video look different from a widescreen video?
YouTube’s Android player adapts to each source’s aspect ratio. In portrait orientation it becomes taller for vertical and square videos and shorter for widescreen content. This automatic fitting is separate from manual pinch-out zoom.
What if the full-screen icon or gesture is missing?
Tap the video to reveal controls, update YouTube, restart the Fold, and check the full-screen-app setting. Also test another video: the source may already match the display ratio or may include bars that cannot be removed. Menu labels can vary by model and software version.
Is the procedure identical on every Fold?
The gesture is the same starting point for Galaxy devices covered by Samsung’s guidance, but the exact menu wording, player layout, and result can vary by Fold generation, One UI release, YouTube version, and region. No fixed crop amount is specified for all models.
Bottom line for a Galaxy Z Fold owner
For a compatible video, the complete process is: open YouTube, enter the player’s full-screen landscape view, and spread two fingers on the picture. Pinch inward to undo it. The result is a larger image with less of the original frame visible. Videos with embedded black bars, a matching screen aspect ratio, or an unsupported aspect ratio may not fill the inner display, and no software gesture can guarantee edge-to-edge playback for every upload.
Use original fit when subtitles, scores, logos, or other edge details matter. Use pinch-to-zoom when a larger central picture is more important than preserving every boundary. If the gesture fails across otherwise compatible videos, work through the connection, app update, cache and data, restart, full-screen-app, and alternate-player checks before treating the Fold’s inner display as the problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a YouTube video fill my Galaxy Z Fold’s inner screen?
Open the video in the YouTube Android app, tap full screen, rotate horizontally if needed, and spread two fingers on the video. Pinch inward to restore the original size.
Why does pinch-to-zoom do nothing on my Fold?
YouTube requires a device aspect ratio greater than 16:9 for pinch-out zoom. Samsung also says zoom is unavailable when the video and screen have the same aspect ratio. Embedded black bars or an incompatible source shape can also make the gesture appear ineffective.
Will zooming crop subtitles or scoreboards?
It can. Pinch-out enlarges the existing image and may move edge content outside the visible area. Pinch inward to restore the complete original frame.
Can YouTube’s gesture remove black bars?
No. Samsung says black bars encoded into the video remain; pinch zoom cannot remove them.
What should I try if YouTube will not enter full screen?
Check the internet connection, update YouTube, clear its cache and data, restart the Fold, verify YouTube under Settings → Display → Full screen apps, and try YouTube in another browser or app. Menu names can vary by software version.
