How to Make YouTube Gaming Reruns Resume a Playlist After a Reboot

YouTube does not document a guaranteed way to restore a playlist’s exact active video and position after a reboot. The most reliable workaround is to save your gaming reruns in a YouTube playlist, then reopen it after reboot and select the video you were watching. If you’re signed in, YouTube usually resumes that individual video near its previous point—but that is different from restoring the playlist’s place in its sequence.

What YouTube does—and does not—resume

Feature What it preserves What it means after reboot
Individual-video progress The approximate timestamp in a video you started watching. A selected, partially watched video usually resumes from its prior point when you’re signed in. Exceptions apply.
Saved playlist The list of videos and their sequence. You can reopen the list and choose a video, but YouTube’s help documentation does not promise to restore the playlist’s former active item or cursor.
Computer browser queue A temporary queue of videos. YouTube says the queue does not save after closing the browser. Save its videos to a playlist instead.
Playlist repeat A setting to repeat playlist playback. Repeat playback is not a saved reboot position; enabling it does not establish that YouTube will restore the prior cursor.

YouTube Help describes individual-video progress this way: “When you play the video again, it will restart from where you were.” That statement concerns a video’s progress, not automatic restoration of the playlist position. (YouTube Help: Video progress bar; Create & manage playlists)

Save gaming reruns so the sequence is available later

  1. Put the reruns in a saved playlist. Open YouTube and add the gaming videos to a playlist you can find again. Give it a clear name, such as “Gaming reruns.” YouTube’s playlist tools let you create and manage a list of videos.
  2. Save any computer queue before closing the browser. If you assembled the reruns in the desktop queue, use YouTube’s option to save those videos to a playlist. The computer queue is temporary and will not be saved when you close the browser. (Queue videos on YouTube – Computer)
  3. After reboot, reopen the playlist and select the video you had started. On the playback device, sign in to the same YouTube account, find the saved playlist, and choose the partly watched rerun. YouTube usually resumes the individual video from its prior point when progress is available; it does not document guaranteed recovery of the playlist’s former active item.

If you want reruns to repeat at the end

Playlist looping and reboot recovery are separate settings. YouTube documents a playlist-repeat control in its TV and gaming-console players. Use the player’s Repeat control and select the playlist-repeat state if you want playback to loop after the last video. This makes the playlist repeat; it does not promise to remember its exact position after a restart. (Loop videos or playlists on YouTube)

When video progress is missing or inaccurate

  • Check that you’re signed in. YouTube associates its progress feature with signed-in users. Confirm that the playback device is using the account you watched with.
  • Refresh before concluding progress was lost. Progress bars may not update immediately. YouTube recommends refreshing the browser or feed if the bar appears stale.
  • Consider watch-history changes. Clearing watch history also clears video progress bars, so the prior timestamp may no longer appear.
  • Allow for exceptions. Individual-video resume is described as usual behavior, not a guarantee for every video; a video near completion may not restart from its previous point.

Progress bars are available to signed-in users on TV, computer, and YouTube mobile apps, though the exact controls vary by device. (YouTube Help: Video progress bar)

For developers: controlling a playlist start point

If you are building an embedded YouTube player rather than using the ordinary YouTube app, the IFrame Player API can cue or load a playlist at a specified index and start time. That is a developer-controlled player capability; it is not evidence that YouTube’s standard TV, console, mobile, or desktop apps preserve playlist playback state through reboots. See the YouTube IFrame Player API Reference.

Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
