How to Make Your YouTube Channel Public: YouTube Privacy Explained

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There usually isn’t one switch that makes every part of a YouTube channel public. Make sure the channel isn’t hidden, then set the videos and playlists you want people to see to Public. Subscription privacy is a separate setting and does not publish your videos.

What “public” means on YouTube

Channel, video, playlist, and subscription visibility are separate. A channel can be visitable while its videos remain private or unlisted; a public video can be watched without making your subscriptions visible. You generally do not need to create a new channel just because existing videos are private or unlisted.

  • Channel page: The channel must not be hidden for people to visit it.
  • Videos and Shorts: Set each item you want people to find to Public. Public videos can appear on your channel and may appear in YouTube search, related videos, recommendations, and subscribers’ feeds; placement is not guaranteed. YouTube explains the visibility options.
  • Playlists: Set a playlist to Public separately. Its individual videos also need suitable visibility.
  • Subscriptions: This controls whether people can see the channels you follow, not whether your own channel or videos are public.

A channel with no public videos may look empty to visitors. Menu labels can vary by device, account, language, or interface version; look for the Visibility control on the item you want to publish.

Make your videos public on a computer

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Content in the left menu.
  3. Find the video. Use the Videos, Shorts, or Live tab if needed.
  4. Click the video’s current visibility setting or visibility dropdown.
  5. Select Public, then click Save.

You can use multi-select controls for bulk edits if they are available in your Studio interface. If you don’t see them, change each video’s Visibility setting individually. These steps are also covered in YouTube’s desktop privacy instructions.

Make a playlist public

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content.
  2. Select Playlists.
  3. Open the playlist’s Details.
  4. Choose Public under Visibility, then save.

A playlist can be public while a video inside it is private or unlisted, so check the playlist and each video separately. A public playlist can be watched and shared by anyone; an unlisted one is accessible to people with its link, while a private one is restricted. See YouTube’s playlist privacy instructions.

Unhide a hidden channel

Hiding a channel is different from setting its videos to Private. A hidden channel’s name, videos, likes, subscriptions, and subscribers are made private. If you hid yours, sign in and follow YouTube’s re-enable prompt on its channel hiding and deletion help page. Re-enabling the channel does not necessarily make each video public; check their visibility afterward. YouTube says view counts may take up to a week to update after re-enabling.

Public Anyone on YouTube Can appear in search, recommendations, related videos, and on the channel Comments may be available subject to other controls; shareable

Private The owner and viewers specifically selected Not publicly listed in search or on the channel Comments unavailable; sharing is restricted

These are YouTube’s general video visibility behaviors; features can differ for playlists. YouTube’s comparison of visibility settings also notes that content in any of these states may be reviewed for copyright, ad suitability, or abuse prevention.

Which setting should you choose?

  • Choose Public when you want anyone to watch and the video to be eligible for discovery and display on your channel.
  • Choose Unlisted for link-based sharing when you do not want the video normally listed on your channel or in search. It is not confidential: recipients can reshare the link.
  • Choose Private for drafts or content restricted to you and selected viewers. It won’t have public discoverability or comments.

Make your subscriptions public

If you want visitors to see which channels you follow, change subscription privacy separately. On a computer, sign in to YouTube, click your profile picture, select Settings, choose Privacy, then turn off Keep all my subscriptions private. Subscriptions are private by default; making them public displays subscribed channels on your channel homepage and can list your account in those channels’ subscriber lists. This does not unhide your channel or publish your videos. See YouTube’s subscription privacy instructions.

Why your channel or video still looks private

Check what a visitor can actually see

  • Confirm you saved the change and the video now shows Public in Studio.
  • Open its URL in an incognito or signed-out browser window.
  • Make sure the channel itself is not hidden and that you are sharing the correct channel URL or handle.
  • Check the video for age restrictions, regional blocks, or a policy action that may limit who can view it.

Allow for publishing and processing

A scheduled video remains private until its scheduled publication time. A newly uploaded video may need processing; YouTube says a video may be publishable after standard-definition processing is complete, while checks can continue in the background. Review YouTube’s upload and visibility guidance.

If YouTube changed videos to Private

YouTube may make videos private after detecting suspicious activity, including possible hacking-related uploads. If you uploaded them, review them and change compliant videos to Public as needed. If you did not upload them, remove unauthorized uploads, secure your Google Account, review channel permissions, and check whether channel details were altered. Follow YouTube’s guidance for videos changed to private.

If you cannot select Public

Check that you are signed into the correct Google Account and channel (including the right Brand Account), and that your channel permissions allow the change. Upload or processing problems, supervised account restrictions, or a policy or metadata issue may also be involved. A video locked as private does not automatically become public after an appeal succeeds; you may still need to change its visibility manually. See YouTube’s locked-private video guidance.

If an old unlisted video became Private

YouTube’s security change, which began July 23, 2021, affected unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017, unless the creator opted out. An affected video may need to be made public manually or re-uploaded as unlisted. Details are on YouTube’s page about older unlisted content.

Check the default for future uploads

The default upload privacy setting does not change the visibility of videos already on your channel. YouTube’s current help documentation says the default is Private for creators aged 13–17 and Public for creators aged 18 or older; every creator can change an individual video’s visibility. Check the setting each time you upload, especially if you want future videos to be public. YouTube’s upload guidance covers defaults and publishing.
