To make a Samsung phone last longer between charges, first check which apps use the most battery in Settings > Battery. Then lower screen brightness, shorten screen timeout, use Power saving when its limits are acceptable, and restrict background activity for apps that do not need to run continuously. Menu names and available controls vary by Galaxy model, software version, and region.
Find what is draining the battery
Start with battery usage rather than changing every setting at once. Open Settings > Battery and review the apps listed as using the most power. On some Galaxy devices or software versions, battery details may be under Settings > Device care. Samsung’s battery optimization guidance and Device care instructions describe these controls, though the exact path can differ.

Look for an app that is consuming unusually much power relative to how often you use it. A high-use app may simply reflect heavy use; if an app is active in the background when you do not need it to be, consider limiting its background activity. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helps.

Reduce power used by the screen
A bright display and a long screen timeout can increase battery consumption. Lower brightness to a level that remains comfortable to read, and set the screen to turn off sooner when idle. Samsung also identifies high-resolution streaming and demanding apps as factors that can use more power. Its battery-saving guidance discusses these usage factors.

There is no single brightness or timeout setting that suits every person or situation. Choose a level you can use comfortably; an aggressively dim screen or very short timeout may save power at the cost of usability.
Use Power saving when its limits fit the moment
Power saving can reduce background activity and limit selected functions to conserve charge. On supported phones, some of its options can be customized. The tradeoff is that features or performance may be restricted, so check the options shown on your device before relying on it. Samsung describes the mode and its settings in its Galaxy battery optimization guidance.
It is useful when the battery is low or when you can accept the restrictions for a while. Turn it off again if a limited feature or slower behavior gets in the way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

For apps you rarely use, Samsung’s battery controls may let you put them to sleep or otherwise limit background usage. This can reduce unnecessary activity, but sleeping apps may not update or send notifications as usual. Keep messaging, security, travel, or other time-sensitive apps unrestricted if you rely on their alerts. Menu labels and availability vary by device. See Samsung’s Device care guidance for details on managing apps.

Check whether 5G or other recent changes coincide with the drain
Samsung notes that a phone may use more battery while connected to 5G. That is a possible contributor, not proof that 5G is the cause of faster drain on a particular phone. If the change began recently, check whether it coincides with time spent on 5G, weak network coverage, location use, a newly installed or updated app, or a software change. Samsung’s fast-draining battery guidance suggests reviewing usage, timeout, Power saving, and background apps.
Keep your phone’s software and apps updated, as Samsung recommends. If one app stands out in battery usage, address that app first rather than assuming the network is responsible.
Choose changes by their tradeoffs
| Change | What it can reduce | Possible tradeoff | Reversing it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower brightness or shorten screen timeout | Display use while viewing or when the phone is idle | Less brightness or less time to read before the screen turns off | Adjust brightness or timeout again in Settings |
| Power saving | Background activity and selected functions | Some features or performance may be limited | Turn the mode off or revise its options |
| Put selected apps to sleep or limit background use | Unneeded app activity when you are not using the app | Updates or notifications may be delayed or absent | Remove the app from the restricted list or restore its background access |
| Review high-use apps | Identifies where power is being consumed; the review itself does not reduce use | No direct tradeoff; follow-up changes may affect app behavior | No setting to reverse; change app restrictions individually |
Samsung’s support pages do not provide a controlled comparison of how many hours each setting saves. The result depends on the phone, network coverage, features, apps, calls, charging, and how the device is used.

Distinguish daily runtime from long-term battery health
Settings such as brightness, Power saving, and background limits target how long the current charge lasts. Charging habits and Battery protection settings concern battery lifespan over time instead. Samsung UK’s battery page, updated 27 November 2025, recommends aiming to keep a smartphone between 20% and 80% charged as lifespan guidance; that range is not a measured way to add runtime to today’s charge. See Samsung’s battery optimization page.
