Turn on your phone’s built-in battery-saving mode immediately, dim the screen, and stop activities that keep the display, processor, GPS, or mobile connection busy. Keep cellular service available when you may need calls or messages; use Airplane Mode only when you can safely give up that connectivity. Make essential calls brief, and use a power bank or compatible car charger as a separate charging source rather than expecting a setting to create extra battery capacity.
What to do in the first five minutes
Battery conservation works best when you start while the phone still has a useful reserve. Complete these steps in order, then adjust your behavior according to the emergency and the communications you may need.

- Enable the built-in battery saver. Use Low Power Mode on an iPhone or Battery Saver/Extreme Battery Saver on a Pixel.
- Dim the display. Set brightness as low as you can comfortably read and let the screen turn off quickly.
- Stop high-drain activities. Close video, games, streaming, long navigation, hotspot use, prolonged GPS, and unnecessary camera or app sessions.
- Decide whether cellular service is essential. If you need calls, texts, alerts, or emergency contact, leave the mobile connection available. If you are in a period with no service and do not need the network, Airplane Mode can prevent the phone from repeatedly searching for a connection.
- Tell people only what they need to know. Use brief calls and messages for vital information, then lock the phone.
- Arrange backup charging safely. Locate a charged power bank or compatible car charger, but do not run a vehicle in an enclosed garage to charge a phone.
These actions cannot guarantee a particular number of additional hours. Actual runtime changes with the phone model, battery condition, signal strength, temperature, and what you do with the device.

Low Power Mode reduces background activity and changes several behaviors that can consume energy, including display brightness, email fetching, automatic downloads, and Background App Refresh. It is a broad, built-in change, so it is preferable to hunting for individual app switches during an outage. Apple states that Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the device reaches 80 percent charge; if you later recharge above that level and the outage continues, check that it is still enabled.
Pixel: Battery Saver or Extreme Battery Saver
Google’s Pixel guidance recommends Battery Saver, or Extreme Battery Saver when the battery is close to dying. The exact controls can vary by device, so open the battery settings or the Quick Settings panel and look for the battery-saver control provided by your Pixel’s software version.
Extreme Battery Saver is the more restrictive choice for a phone that must remain available for as long as possible. Because Google notes that steps vary by device, read the on-screen description before confirming it and make sure essential communication apps remain usable.
Other Android phones
Android manufacturers use different names and menu locations. Look in Settings for Battery, Battery Saver, Power saving, or a similar control. Prefer the phone’s own battery mode over installing a new “battery optimizer” app: downloading, configuring, and running another app uses the battery you are trying to preserve.
Prepare before an outage if you have warning
If a storm, wildfire, planned shutdown, or other event gives you advance notice, charge the phone and any backup battery while household power is available. Find the charging cable, wall adapter, and vehicle charger before conditions worsen. A compatible cable matters: a power bank or car adapter cannot help if its connector does not fit the phone.
Write down or save the information you may need repeatedly, such as key phone numbers, an address, a meeting point, medication details, and instructions from local authorities. A short note is easier to open than repeatedly searching several apps. You can also tell family or coworkers how you will communicate and agree on a check-in time, reducing a stream of repeated calls during the outage.
Keep the phone where you can hear an important alert, but avoid leaving the display awake. If you have a medical device, required headset, or other safety accessory that uses Bluetooth, plan to keep that connection available rather than switching it off automatically.
Reduce screen use and demanding workloads
The display is one of the easiest drains to control because every minute it is lit consumes energy. Lower brightness, lock the phone whenever you finish a task, and avoid repeatedly waking it just to check the percentage. If you need to read a long message, consider copying the essential details into a short note so you do not keep reopening several apps.
Google’s Pixel instructions specifically advise avoiding activities that keep the screen or network active. During an outage, postpone:
- Video playback and video streaming
- Graphics-heavy games
- Long turn-by-turn navigation sessions when you already know the route
- Hotspot or tethering for another device
- Prolonged GPS use
- Extended browsing or social-media sessions
- Frequent or unnecessary camera use
These are not forbidden in every emergency. Navigation may be essential while evacuating, and a camera may be needed to document damage. The practical rule is to use them for the shortest time that accomplishes the safety task, then close the app and lock the phone.
Do not keep a streaming app, map, game, or camera open in the background after the immediate task ends. Return to the home screen, close the active session if needed, and let the display sleep. If you must navigate, load only the route information you need and stop checking the map continuously when it is safe to do so.

Manage cellular service, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Location deliberately
Airplane Mode is a trade-off, not a universal battery fix
Airplane Mode can save power when the mobile network is unavailable or you have no need to communicate. A phone that cannot find a usable network may continue searching, so disconnecting the radios can avoid that activity. However, Airplane Mode prevents cellular calls and messages. Do not enable it if you are waiting for an emergency call, public-safety alert, evacuation instruction, or a message from someone coordinating help.
Use this decision:
- Need calls, SMS, alerts, or emergency contact: leave cellular service available and conserve power elsewhere.
- No cellular service and no immediate need for the network: Airplane Mode is reasonable while you wait, sleep, or travel through a no-service area.
- Need a connection only occasionally: keep the phone in Airplane Mode while resting, then turn it off for a scheduled check or essential call.
When service becomes available again, turn Airplane Mode off before expecting ordinary calls or texts. The exact behavior of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth while Airplane Mode is enabled can depend on the phone and what you manually re-enable; verify the icons before relying on a connection.
Bluetooth and Location
Turn off Bluetooth when you are not using accessories such as a medical device or required headset. Disable Location only when location-dependent apps and features are unnecessary. Google warns that turning off Location can stop apps and functions that depend on it, so do not disable it if you need navigation, location sharing for safety, or another service that must know where you are.
Apply the same rule to other radios: switch off a connection only after confirming that no safety device, notification, or communication depends on it. Restoring a setting later can take time and may require waking the screen, so make deliberate changes rather than toggling everything at once.
Wi-Fi and hotspot use
Do not leave a hotspot running after another device has finished using it. Tethering makes the phone maintain a network connection and usually keeps other radios active. If a functioning Wi-Fi network is available and cellular coverage is poor, Wi-Fi calling or messaging may be useful, but the right choice depends on whether that network and its power source remain operational.
A home router may lose power during the same outage, so do not assume Wi-Fi will remain available. Check that a connection actually works before leaving cellular service off. If you use a public or shared network during an emergency, avoid spending battery on unnecessary browsing and follow local safety guidance.
Use communication for essential information
The U.S. Department of Energy’s outage guidance recommends keeping calls brief and limiting them to vital information. A short text can use less screen time than a long call, but choose the method that reliably reaches the person you need. Avoid repeated “Are you safe?” calls when one concise status message will do; agree on a check-in time if conditions allow.
Before the battery becomes critical, prepare a compact note with important phone numbers, an address, meeting location, medication details, or other information you may need to relay. Writing it once reduces repeated searching through contacts and apps. Keep emergency calling available even while conserving power; saving a small amount of charge is not worth losing access to help.
Recommended Free Tools
Send one clear update with your status, location when appropriate, and next check-in time. Then silence unnecessary app activity without silencing an alert you genuinely need. If officials issue evacuation or shelter instructions, follow those instructions even if doing so requires navigation, a call, or temporarily restoring Location.
When to use a power bank or car charger
Power bank
A USB phone power bank is an optional backup battery. It can recharge the phone after its internal charge falls, but it does not make the existing battery last longer by itself and it is not a battery-saving setting. Charge the power bank before an outage, keep the cable compatible with your phone, and remember that the bank also has a finite capacity. No universal runtime or phone-charge increase can be promised without knowing both devices and the charging conditions.
Use the power bank for the communications you actually need rather than treating a newly charged phone as a reason to resume streaming or gaming. Keep the bank and cable dry and undamaged, and stop using them if either becomes unusually hot, swollen, or damaged.

Car charger
The Department of Energy recommends a car charger as another way to keep a mobile device powered. Use a charger that matches your phone’s connector and is intended for the vehicle’s electrical system. If the vehicle must be running, move it outside before starting it. Never run an engine in a garage or another enclosed space because exhaust can contain deadly carbon monoxide. Follow local emergency-management and utility instructions about when travel is safe; charging the phone is not a reason to enter a dangerous area during the incident.
Spare batteries and other sources
Keep any spare phone batteries or approved charging accessories stored where they are easy to find. Inspect cables and connectors before use, and stop if a battery or charger becomes unusually hot, swollen, damaged, or wet. The free conservation steps remain useful even when no backup charger is available.
Why there is no fixed number of extra hours
Official Apple and Google guidance explains which settings and activities affect consumption but does not provide a universal outage-runtime figure. Two identical phones can last different lengths of time because one may be in a weak-signal area, have an older battery, or be running a navigation app while the other is idle. Battery capacity, battery health, temperature, network conditions, screen brightness, and app behavior all matter.
For that reason, treat a percentage shown on the status bar as an estimate rather than a schedule. If the phone reports a low battery, preserve the remaining charge immediately instead of waiting for a particular percentage or promised number of hours.

Troubleshoot the most common mistakes
The battery is still falling quickly
Check whether the display is staying awake, a video or navigation app is open, or hotspot and GPS are active. End the demanding task, lock the screen, and confirm that the built-in battery mode is still enabled. On an iPhone, remember that Low Power Mode may switch off after the phone reaches 80 percent during charging.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou enabled Airplane Mode and cannot receive a call
That is expected: Airplane Mode disables cellular calls and messages. Turn it off when you need the mobile network, then leave it off while waiting for an important contact or alert.
Navigation or location sharing stopped
Location may have been disabled, or the phone may be in a restrictive battery mode. Restore Location and the required app only for the safety task, use it briefly, and then return to conservation settings when you reach safety.
The phone will not charge from the car
Check the cable, connector, vehicle accessory power, and charger compatibility. If the engine must run, move the vehicle outdoors first and follow local emergency instructions. Do not troubleshoot by running the car in an enclosed space.

Is it safe to charge in a running car?
Only outdoors or in another well-ventilated place. Never run the engine in a garage or enclosed area because carbon monoxide can be deadly. Follow local officials’ instructions before traveling to the vehicle.
How many extra hours will these steps provide?
There is no universal number. Runtime depends on the model, battery condition, signal, temperature, brightness, and workload, and official guidance does not promise a fixed gain.
The bottom line for an outage
Start conserving immediately: enable the phone’s own battery mode, dim and limit the screen, stop intensive apps, and make only essential communications. Keep cellular access when it protects your ability to call or receive alerts; choose Airplane Mode only when that access is not needed. A charged power bank or safe car charger can add energy later, but no setting can promise a fixed number of extra hours.
