Those are useful Windows checks—not a verified account of three settings changed on a particular monitor. The exact options depend on the monitor, graphics hardware, connection, and operating system.
Start with the correct display
When more than one screen is connected, Windows applies display settings to the selected screen. Go to Settings > System > Display, select the monitor you want to adjust, and confirm that you are changing the intended display. Set resolution and scaling separately
Choose the recommended resolution
In the selected display’s settings, open Display resolution and choose the option marked Recommended. Resolution determines the display mode; using a lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp or cause the image to appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched, depending on the display and mode.
Adjust scale for readability
Scale changes the size of text, apps, and other interface elements; it does not change the resolution. Microsoft recommends the marked resolution and scale in typical cases, but scaling is the control to adjust if interface elements are too small or too large. Avoid lowering resolution just to make text bigger.

Check the refresh rate available for that resolution
Refresh rate is how often the screen updates its image. Microsoft defines it as “the number of times per second that the image refreshes on the screen.” In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the right monitor if needed, and inspect the refresh-rate list. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions.
The list contains modes the current setup exposes, not a guarantee that every advertised rate works at every resolution. An asterisk next to a rate means it is incompatible with the current resolution; choosing it changes the resolution. Pick a supported combination that suits the way you use the monitor rather than pursuing the highest number in isolation.

If the advertised mode is missing
Before buying a cable or changing hardware, check the monitor’s specifications and menu options, graphics-card capability and driver status, connection type, and cable compatibility. The usable rate depends on the monitor, graphics hardware, and selected resolution. Samsung’s example involving 5120×1440 at 240 Hz is specific to that high-resolution, high-refresh scenario: its guidance includes checking Game Mode, GPU support and drivers, and a compatible DisplayPort cable. If the complaint is inaccurate color, look at the selected display’s color profile and calibration controls. If the issue is HDR, check the Windows HDR controls for a supported display; Microsoft directs users with HDR-enabled external displays to the Windows HDR Calibration app. These settings address color and HDR image quality, not a missing resolution or refresh-rate mode. What determines the modes you can use?
The available combination depends on the operating system, monitor model and native resolution, graphics hardware, selected resolution, and connection and cable support. Windows can only offer modes supported by the setup. For a given monitor, compare the actual modes it exposes: a higher refresh rate may not be available at the resolution you want, and a lower resolution may not be an acceptable tradeoff.
These steps describe Windows settings, not a verified personal result from a particular monitor. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the cited Microsoft instructions also cover Windows 11. Labels and paths may change in later releases.
