Do not assume that more RAM, a new battery, or a reinstall will help until you know the laptop’s exact model and the bottleneck you are trying to fix.
Some limits cannot be fixed economically. A swollen battery is a safety emergency, an unsupported operating system reduces security, and many thin laptops have parts that are not user-replaceable. The steps below separate free maintenance from purchases and show when a technician is the lower-risk choice.

1. Protect your files before touching anything
Make a current backup before troubleshooting, changing major settings, opening the case, or sending the laptop for repair. Microsoft recommends backing up a Windows PC both to protect files and to make a later move to another computer easier. Use a trusted external drive or another backup method you already have; buying a special drive is not a prerequisite for starting the diagnosis.
What to include
- Documents, photos, school or work folders, and files on the desktop and in Downloads.
- Browser bookmarks and any locally stored password or recovery information you are allowed to preserve.
- Application data that is not already synchronized elsewhere.
- License keys, recovery codes, and a list of programs you will need after a repair or reset.
Open a few copied files from the backup to confirm that it actually works. Keep the backup disconnected when you are not updating it so a hardware failure or malware incident cannot damage both copies.

2. Identify the problem instead of guessing
“Slow,” “short battery life,” “overheating,” and “won’t charge” have different causes. Write down when the problem occurs and what changed. Microsoft lists nearly full storage and persistently high CPU, memory, or disk use as performance clues, not as proof that the laptop is beyond repair.

Do not buy a part merely because the laptop feels old. An upgrade is sensible only when the exact machine accepts that part and the diagnosed bottleneck matches it.
3. Reduce heat and battery wear
Use a cooler setup
- Keep air intakes and exhaust vents unobstructed.
- Use the laptop on a firm, flat surface rather than bedding, clothing, or a cushion that can block airflow.
- Do not leave it in a hot car, direct sun, or another hot storage area.
- Close demanding programs when they are not needed and let the machine cool before packing it away.
Heat accelerates lithium-ion battery deterioration. Frequent deep discharges can also speed capacity loss, so avoid deliberately running the battery to zero as a routine.
Adopt a moderate charging routine
Microsoft’s Windows 11 battery guidance says, “To help slow battery degradation, it’s best to avoid frequent deep discharges and instead keep the battery within a moderate charge range (roughly 20%–80%) whenever possible.” Treat that as a practical recommendation, not a guarantee. If your laptop offers smart charging or a charge limit, enable it when the computer commonly stays plugged in. The labels and controls vary by manufacturer, and the laptop’s manual or battery-management utility takes precedence.
You do not need to unplug at exactly 80 percent or panic when the charge falls below 20 percent. The aim is to avoid making full-to-empty cycles the normal pattern while keeping the computer available for work.

Store it correctly
For storage lasting weeks or longer, Microsoft recommends about 40%–60% charge in a cool, dry place, with periodic checks. Exact storage instructions can differ by model. Do not store a powered-on laptop in a bag, and do not put a device away while it is unusually hot.
Run a Windows battery report
- Save your work and open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt with your normal user account.
- Enter
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Read the path Windows prints, then open the generated HTML file in a browser.
- Review the installed-battery section, recent usage, and battery-usage information for patterns such as a sharp drop in capacity or unusually high drain.
Microsoft describes this report as a diagnostic aid. It does not by itself decide whether a replacement is safe, compatible, or worth its cost; compare the evidence with your actual runtime and the exact model’s service information.

A visibly swollen battery is a safety issue. Microsoft says to stop using the device immediately and not to press, puncture, compress, or casually remove the battery. Disconnect power if it can be done without handling a damaged component, keep the laptop away from heat and flammable materials, and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider for safe handling instructions. Do not continue using it to “run the battery down.”
4. Clean the laptop without damaging it
External cleaning procedure
- Shut the laptop down completely and disconnect the charger and other cables.
- Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth on the screen, keyboard, palm rest, and outer case.
- If the cloth needs moisture, follow the laptop maker’s instructions and apply it to the cloth, never by spraying the device directly.
- Clear visible debris from ventilation openings with an appropriate can of compressed air as described by the manufacturer.
- Reconnect power only after surfaces are dry and the laptop is free of loose debris.
Dell specifically cautions against window cleaner and ordinary household cleaners on an LCD. Do not push objects into vents, pour liquid into openings, or assume that removing the bottom cover is safe. A microfiber cloth and model-appropriate vent-cleaning supplies may be all you need; a cleaning kit is optional, not a cure for a failing fan or blocked internal heatsink.
When internal cleaning needs a professional
Internal fan and heatsink access differs widely. Some models have a documented service procedure; others use clips, adhesive, or fragile cables. If the manual does not describe safe access, or you are not comfortable disconnecting the battery and handling delicate connectors, stop at external cleaning and obtain a service estimate.

5. Free up performance before buying hardware
Use Task Manager to find the bottleneck
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - On the Processes tab, sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk in turn while the slowdown is happening.
- On the Performance tab, note whether a resource remains near its limit during ordinary work.
- On the Startup apps tab, disable only programs you recognize as unnecessary at sign-in. Leave security tools, hardware utilities, and items you do not understand enabled until you verify them.
A short spike is normal. A resource that stays high while you perform simple tasks is a stronger reason to investigate. Record the application name and timing before ending a process; terminating the wrong process can close work or destabilize Windows.

Recover storage space
- Uninstall applications you no longer use through Windows Settings.
- Move large personal files to your existing backup or another trusted storage location, then verify the copies before deleting originals.
- Empty temporary files and the Recycle Bin only after checking their contents.
- Keep enough free space for Windows updates and the applications you actually use.
Free space may reduce disk pressure, but it cannot turn an unsupported processor into a modern one. Measure the result after each change rather than making many changes at once.
Install supported updates
Apply Windows updates, driver updates offered through Windows or the manufacturer, and application updates that your hardware supports. Updates can fix bugs and security issues, but they are not a promise of faster performance. If a new update causes a specific problem, document the version and use the vendor’s supported rollback or recovery option instead of deleting system files.
6. Decide whether an upgrade is actually possible
Memory and solid-state storage upgrades can help when they are compatible and the measurements show a real shortage. They are not universal solutions. Many laptops have soldered memory, proprietary storage, limited slots, or no safe user-access path.
Verify the exact model
- Record the full model number, serial number, and operating-system edition from the laptop label, Windows Settings, or the manufacturer’s support utility.
- Download the model’s service manual or user guide from the manufacturer’s support site.
- Check whether RAM, storage, battery, or the wireless card is listed as replaceable and which part numbers are approved.
- Compare the part’s interface, capacity limits, physical dimensions, firmware requirements, and warranty implications with that documentation.
- Only then request a price or order a component from a trustworthy source.
Framework describes its own laptops as having modular, replaceable, or upgradeable parts, but that manufacturer description cannot be generalized to other brands or models. The only reliable answer for your computer is its documentation and physical design.

Why a “universal” battery is a bad shortcut
Battery shape, connector, firmware, voltage, capacity, and safety circuitry are model-specific. Do not buy a generic “universal” replacement. Lenovo says it cannot verify safety or compatibility claims for non-Lenovo batteries in its systems and recommends appropriate Lenovo batteries. Match the exact model and part number, and use a qualified technician when the battery is not identified as a customer-replaceable unit.
7. Compare a repair with continued use or replacement
Find the full model and serial number, check warranty status, and collect an estimate before authorizing work. Lenovo’s user guides identify whether a battery is a customer-replaceable unit (CRU); Lenovo directs non-CRU battery work to authorized technicians. Microsoft lists Surface mail-in, authorized-provider, and out-of-warranty routes, but availability varies by region and device.

Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to function after support ends, but they no longer receive software and feature updates, security updates and fixes, or technical support. A laptop that still turns on is therefore not automatically a safe long-term computer for banking, work, or sensitive accounts.

- Do not assume every older computer can run Windows 11 or that unsupported use is risk-free.

9. A maintenance schedule that costs little
Every week
- Notice unusual heat, fan noise, shutdowns, charging behavior, or swelling.
- Keep the vents unobstructed and use a firm surface.
- Back up newly important files.
Every month
- Review free storage and remove or archive files you no longer need.
- Check Task Manager’s Startup apps list for software you knowingly installed.
- Install supported Windows, driver, browser, and application updates.
Every few months
