Making your Instagram account private means new followers must be approved, but it does not automatically control every way people can reach or interact with you. Review follower visibility first, then set separate preferences for messages, group chats, tags, mentions, and unwanted interactions.
Make your account private
In Instagram, open the privacy settings available in your app and switch your account to private. Meta says new followers then need your approval before they can follow you and see content restricted to followers. The exact menu path and labels can vary across app versions, account types, and regions, so use the privacy controls shown in your current app rather than relying on a universal tap sequence. Meta’s private-account guidance explains the effect of the setting.

Private mode is not described as automatically removing existing followers. If you no longer want particular people to see follower-only content, review your follower list separately and remove accounts you do not want there.
Choose who can message you or add you to group chats
Account privacy and message delivery are separate controls. In your messaging or privacy settings, review who can send you message requests and whether messages from people you do not follow are routed to requests or not delivered. Check group-chat settings separately: permission to send a direct message does not necessarily determine who can add you to a group. Some messaging controls may vary in availability. Meta’s message and group-chat settings guidance describes these options.

Limit tags and mentions
Set the audiences for tags and mentions independently of your account’s follower setting. Meta says Instagram offers choices to allow everyone, only people you follow, or no one to tag or mention you in a comment, caption, or story. Choose the audience that matches how discoverable you want to be. Instagram Safety Center describes these controls.
Use Limits or Restrict for unwanted interactions
Limits
Limits can hide comments and message requests from people who do not follow you or who followed you recently. It is an additional way to reduce unwanted bursts of interaction, not a replacement for setting follower and message preferences.

Restrict
Restrict is aimed at a particular account. It reduces the visibility of that person’s comments and limits notifications about their activity. Use it when you want to reduce an individual’s impact without changing your settings for everyone. Meta outlines Limits and Restrict in its Safety Center.
Know what changes for Teen Accounts
Meta says Teen Accounts have private accounts by default, stricter messaging settings, and limits on who can tag or mention teens. Under the stricter messaging default, teens can receive DMs or group-chat additions from people they follow or are connected to. Rules for changing protections depend on age, country, and supervision: Meta says teens under 16 need parental permission to make built-in protections less strict, and its announcement describes an under-18 threshold in certain countries. These are policy conditions, not one universal age rule. See Meta’s Teen Accounts announcement and its explanation of Teen Account messaging protections for details.

Review settings by the kind of contact you want to limit
| Setting | What it controls | Options or effect described by Meta |
|---|---|---|
| Private account | New followers and follower-only content visibility | New followers require approval. |
| Message delivery | Who can send messages and where some messages go | Some messages can go to requests or not be delivered; availability may vary. |
| Group chats | Who can add you to group conversations | Separate group-chat controls are available. |
| Tags and mentions | Who can tag or mention you | Everyone, people you follow, or no one. |
| Limits | Comments and message requests from non-followers or recent followers | Can hide these interactions. |
| Restrict | A particular account’s comments and notifications | Reduces comment visibility and notifications about that account’s activity. |
For the broadest reduction in unwanted contact, review each relevant control rather than treating private status as a blanket contact block. If a label or option is missing, check the current settings in your app; the available controls and navigation can change.
