Keep your newborn in a comfortably cool environment, use working air conditioning when possible, and move to an air-conditioned location if your home is too hot or the power fails. Infants cannot cool or hydrate themselves or tell you they feel unwell, so plan to check on them actively. Continue breast milk or formula—do not give water to a baby under six months—and keep the baby’s sleep space clear and safe.
Make a cooling plan before the heat arrives
There is no single indoor temperature target that applies to every newborn and home. Use air conditioning where available, watch your baby’s condition, and arrange another cool place if your home cannot stay comfortably cool. The CDC recommends using air conditioning or finding a location that has it; the EPA also recommends keeping indoor air cool with air conditioning.

If your home has working air conditioning
Use it during extreme heat. Reduce the heat entering the home by covering windows that receive direct morning or afternoon sun with shades, drapes, roller shades, awnings, or louvers. The EPA notes that outdoor awnings and louvers can block more heat than indoor shades. Shading can help, but it is not a substitute for air conditioning when the home remains too hot.
If you have no air conditioning, it fails, or power goes out
Choose a safe, air-conditioned destination and plan how you will get there before a heat emergency. Cooling centers, libraries, and malls may offer relief, but check local hours and availability rather than assuming a particular place is open. The CDC suggests calling 2-1-1, checking the National Center for Healthy Housing’s cooling-center listings, or contacting local health or emergency-management officials. Ready.gov also advises planning ahead for extreme heat.

Manage sun, windows, and indoor heat
Close windows when the outdoor air is hotter than the indoor air; open them when it is cooler, while considering outdoor air quality before ventilating. If air quality is poor or ventilation is limited, avoid or delay indoor activities that worsen it. Use the stove and oven less when the home lacks air conditioning, as the CDC recommends.

Fans are not a substitute for air conditioning or relocation when a room is dangerously hot. Guidance differs in how it describes temperature thresholds: the CDC cautions that above 90°F (32°C) a fan can increase body temperature; the EPA advises against using fans in a closed room and against electric fans for cooling in the mid-90s or higher; the AAP says to keep fans a safe distance from children and not direct one toward a child when the room is above 90°F. In extreme heat, do not point a fan at your baby.

Use light clothing and watch for overheating
Dress your baby in light, loose clothing and avoid overdressing. The AAP’s newborn guidance says clothing may be reduced to a single layer when the temperature is above about 75°F (24°C); this is hot-weather clothing advice, not a heat-illness threshold. After coming home from the hospital, do not put an indoor hat on the baby. Check for sweating, a hot chest, or flushed skin. If your baby is sweating, move them out of the sun and cool them.

Continue breast milk or formula; do not offer water
For a baby under six months, do not give water in hot weather. A breastfed baby may need additional breast milk, and a formula-fed baby additional formula. Ask your pediatrician about feeding or hydration concerns, particularly if your newborn seems unwell or is feeding poorly.
Check diapers and keep your baby out of direct sun
Concentrated urine can be a sign of dehydration. Treat it as a reason to act and seek clinical advice as appropriate, not as a substitute for medical assessment. Keep your baby out of direct sunlight where feasible, and never leave a baby in a parked car—even with the windows open.

Keep safe-sleep practices in place
Heat precautions do not change the basics: place your baby on their back for sleep on a firm, flat surface that meets U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. Keep blankets, pillows, pads, bumpers, toys, and other loose items out of the sleep space. Avoid overheating; the AAP says a baby generally needs only one more layer than an adult would wear in the same environment. Check for sweating, a hot chest, or flushed skin, and do not use loose bedding to address warmth.

The AAP reports that around 3,500 babies in the United States die suddenly and unexpectedly while sleeping each year; most deaths in this category are due to sudden infant death syndrome or accidental suffocation or strangulation. This figure is not a statistic about heat-related deaths.

Know when to get urgent help
Heatstroke is a medical emergency. If you suspect your baby has heatstroke, call 911 or go to an emergency department right away, as the AAP advises. Heatstroke is caused by environmental heat and dehydration; it is different from a fever caused by infection. Babies can develop heatstroke when overdressed in hot, humid conditions.
For a newborn who seems abnormal, is feeding poorly, or shows signs that concern you, contact the baby’s pediatrician promptly. Do not wait for a baby to be able to describe symptoms.
