If you cannot tell where energy is being lost, a home energy assessment can help prioritize improvements. The best next step depends on your climate, local rates, fuel source, home and existing equipment; some measures lower electricity use, while others reduce heating and cooling costs that may be paid with gas or another fuel.
Where should you start to lower your electricity bill?
Review bills by month and fuel so you can distinguish electricity costs from heating fuel or other energy costs. Note seasonal spikes and look for major loads, such as heating and cooling, water heating, or frequently used appliances. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends targeting the largest energy consumer or bill and suggests asking your utility or state energy office about an audit. DOE’s Home Energy Checklist outlines a starting point.

A home energy assessment can identify projects and help sequence them; ENERGY STAR describes planning improvements after an assessment. ENERGY STAR’s home improvement guidance explains that approach. An assessment or upgrade is not a guaranteed bill reduction: your result depends on usage, rates, climate, the condition of the home, occupancy and what equipment you already have.
Seal leaks and insulate where the home needs it
When a home has noticeable drafts or insufficient insulation, sealing and insulation are foundational improvements. ENERGY STAR reports an EPA estimate of 15% average savings on heating and cooling costs, or 11% average savings on total energy costs, from air sealing and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces and basements. These are averages, not a forecast for a particular home. ENERGY STAR also gives a general estimate of up to 10% savings on annual energy bills from sealing leaks and adding insulation; that figure is likewise not a personal guarantee. See ENERGY STAR’s explanation of sealing and insulating.

Use the right material for the joint
- Weatherstripping: use it on moving components, such as doors and operable windows. Check that the door or window still opens and closes properly after installation.
- Caulk: use it for stationary cracks and gaps, where surfaces do not move against each other.
The DOE’s air-sealing and insulation essentials explains this distinction. For a DIY project, ENERGY STAR’s guide to sealing and insulating covers finding less obvious attic and basement leaks, checking attic insulation and safety. Insulation methods vary by climate zone, so avoid assuming one approach fits every home.
Check heating, cooling and ductwork before replacing equipment
For forced-air systems, inspect accessible ducts—especially ducts that pass through unconditioned areas such as attics, crawl spaces or garages. ENERGY STAR says sealing and insulating ducts in these areas can improve heating and cooling system efficiency by as much as 20% in some cases. The benefit depends on the system and the duct condition. Its heating and cooling guidance also warns that improper HVAC installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30%, which is why major equipment work should be evaluated and installed by qualified professionals.

Statistics of power usage in now/day/week/month/year format: the validity period of hourly exported data is 90 days, and the exported data of day/month/year data is permanent, available at any time Export from application.
Use thermostat controls that fit your schedule
Programmable thermostat settings can reduce unnecessary heating or cooling when the household is away or asleep. ENERGY STAR says a certified smart thermostat may save approximately $100 per year in homes with high heating and cooling bills or that are unoccupied for much of the day. That is a qualified estimate, not a promise for every household; check compatibility with your HVAC system and whether its controls match your routine.

Replacing an incandescent or fluorescent bulb with an LED is most relevant in fixtures used for several hours a day; upgrading a rarely used light will usually matter less. The DOE checklist also recommends maintaining HVAC filters and evaluating aging appliances. Compare an appliance’s age and use with the likely benefits of a more efficient replacement rather than replacing working equipment automatically. ENERGY STAR includes lighting, appliances and water heating among home improvement categories.

Water heating may be a meaningful target if it is a large household load, but the best measure depends on the existing heater, fuel and usage. These upgrades can affect electricity use or total household energy costs differently, so use bills and an assessment to decide which deserves attention first.
Check rebates and assistance in your state or territory
Federal Home Energy Rebates are not universally available to every household. The DOE says HOMES and HEEHR rebate programs are available in select states and describes eligible upgrade categories that can include insulation, air sealing, HVAC equipment, water heaters, ducts, appliances and lighting. Availability, household eligibility, covered work and application timing depend on the relevant state or territory program. Check the current status with your State or Territory Energy Office through DOE’s Home Energy Rebates page before planning a project.

A practical order for choosing improvements
- Measure: compare utility bills by month and fuel; if the main sources of cost or loss are unclear, ask your utility or state energy office about an audit.
- Address the envelope: identify drafts and insulation gaps, then choose sealing and insulation work appropriate to your climate and project complexity.
- Review HVAC distribution and controls: check whether ducts run through unconditioned spaces, consider system condition and installation quality, and match thermostat settings to occupancy.
- Upgrade selectively: start with frequently used lights and high-use or aging appliances when the bills suggest they are significant loads.
- Verify incentives: confirm local program availability, eligibility, covered measures and deadlines before committing to work.
This sequence is a way to direct attention, not a universal ranking. A drafty home with leaky ducts may benefit more from envelope or distribution work than from new appliances; a home with a sound envelope and high-use inefficient equipment may have different priorities. Climate, energy rates, fuel source, building age and existing equipment all change the economics.
