A healthier home starts with reducing hazards where they originate: fix moisture problems, vent pollutants when outdoor conditions make that appropriate, maintain fuel-burning appliances, and test for hazards such as radon that you cannot detect by sight or smell. Air cleaners and monitoring devices can help with specific tasks, but no single gadget makes an entire home safe or healthy. This U.S.-focused guide follows the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s homeowner guidance.

What should you tackle first?

Work from the hazard to the remedy, rather than buying a general-purpose “healthy home” product. EPA describes source control—eliminating or reducing pollutant sources—as one of the most effective ways to improve indoor air quality. Ventilation and filtration can support that work, but they do not replace fixing the source.

  1. Address immediate safety concerns. Install and maintain carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and smoke alarms according to their instructions and local fire-safety requirements. If an alarm sounds, follow its instructions and your local emergency guidance.
  2. Test for hazards that have no reliable visible warning. Radon is one example; a home radon test is how to find out whether the home has a problem.
  3. Stop water and combustion problems at their source. Repair leaks, dry wet materials, and have fuel-burning appliances properly installed, vented, and maintained.
  4. Reduce routine pollutant sources. Keep the home smoke-free, use household products as their labels direct, and ventilate when using products that may release pollutants if conditions allow.
  5. Use ventilation or filtration as targeted support. Choose the approach for the specific pollutant and room, and account for outdoor air quality, maintenance, and coverage.

EPA’s July 2025 Factsheet: What is Indoor Air Quality? says people spend 90 percent of their time indoors on average and that indoor levels of some pollutants are often several times higher than outdoor levels. Those are broad averages and observations about some pollutants—not a measurement of any particular home.

How can you improve indoor air without relying on a purifier?

Reduce pollutants at the source

EPA identifies household products, building materials, smoke, and other sources as contributors to indoor pollution. Keep indoor smoking out of the home. Follow product-label directions, ventilate when using products that may release pollutants when it is safe and practical, and store them safely. Do not mix cleaners unless the label specifically directs it.

Renovation can introduce new emissions or disturb existing materials. If you suspect lead paint or asbestos-containing material, do not disturb it based on ordinary cleaning or DIY advice; seek hazard-specific guidance from a qualified source.

Ventilate when outdoor air and conditions make it appropriate

Fresh outdoor air can dilute indoor pollutants, and kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans can remove moisture and contaminants. Opening a window is not always the right choice: outdoor smoke, extreme weather, security concerns, or other poor outdoor conditions can make it unsuitable. Use exhaust ventilation where available and appropriate, and avoid assuming that more outdoor air is always better.

Weatherization and other energy upgrades should be paired with suitable ventilation and moisture protections. Tightening a home without considering those needs can contribute to indoor-air or moisture problems.

Use filtration for the pollutants it can address

An air cleaner or suitable replacement filter may reduce certain airborne particles under appropriate conditions. Its usefulness depends on the pollutant, the room or area it serves, and keeping up with filter maintenance. EPA cautions that ordinary air cleaners do not remove gases such as radon and are not a substitute for source control. A purifier will not fix a leak, remove the cause of mold growth, or replace a radon test.

How do you test for radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas from soil that can enter a home through cracks and openings in floors and walls that contact the ground. You cannot reliably identify it by smell or sight. EPA describes radon as the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers and the second leading cause overall.

  1. Test the home. EPA identifies a do-it-yourself radon test kit as one option. Follow the kit’s instructions for where and how long to test.
  2. Use the result to decide what comes next. If the result indicates a need for repair, contact a qualified radon mitigation specialist.

A radon test kit measures for the hazard; it does not reduce radon. A general-purpose air cleaner is not a radon test or mitigation system.

How do you prevent mold and moisture damage?

EPA’s Care for Your Air: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality puts it plainly: “The key to mold control is moisture control.” Mold can grow where moisture is present, so address the water problem rather than treating a visible patch as the whole issue.

  • Repair leaks and other sources of water intrusion.
  • Dry wet materials and water-damaged areas within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth.
  • Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans where available and appropriate to remove moisture.
  • Keep indoor humidity below 60%; EPA’s general homeowner guidance identifies 30–50% as the ideal range.

A humidity gauge can help you observe indoor humidity, but it cannot find a leak or remove mold. If moisture keeps returning or damage is extensive, seek qualified building or remediation help; the EPA guidance cited here does not establish one universal threshold for professional remediation.

How can you reduce carbon monoxide and combustion hazards?

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that interferes with oxygen delivery; high levels can be fatal. EPA recommends CO alarms and properly installed, vented, and maintained fuel-burning appliances.

  • Install and maintain CO alarms according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local fire-safety guidance.
  • Have fuel-burning appliances properly installed, vented, and maintained.
  • Vent combustion appliances outdoors where possible, consistent with the appliance and applicable safety guidance.

Do not rely on smell or an air purifier to detect CO. Follow alarm instructions and local emergency guidance if an alarm activates.

Which tools help with which hazards?

Option What it is for What it does not do
Home radon test kit Tests the home for radon; EPA names DIY testing as an option. Does not mitigate radon or make the home safer by itself.
CO alarm and smoke alarm Provides an alarm for the hazards covered by that alarm; follow its instructions and local requirements. Does not maintain or repair an appliance, remove smoke, or substitute for a smoke-free home.
Humidity gauge Helps observe indoor humidity while you address moisture sources. Does not locate water intrusion, dry wet materials, or remove mold.
Air cleaner or suitable filter May reduce certain particles, depending on the pollutant, coverage, and maintenance. Does not remove radon, correct a pollutant source, or stop moisture-related mold growth.

What is a practical home checkup?

Use this short routine to find next steps without assuming every home has every hazard.

  • Look for moisture: Check for leaks, damp materials, or recurring water problems; prioritize repairing the cause and drying affected areas.
  • Check safety devices: Confirm CO and smoke alarms are present and maintained according to their instructions and local guidance.
  • Review fuel-burning equipment: Arrange proper installation, venting, and maintenance as needed.
  • Review daily pollutant sources: Keep the home smoke-free, use household products as labeled, and consider ventilation when using products that may release pollutants.
  • Test rather than guess: Use a radon test kit to assess radon; do not try to infer its presence from a room’s smell or appearance.
  • Choose add-ons by hazard: Before buying a filter or monitor, identify the pollutant it is meant to address, the area it covers, and the maintenance it requires.

EPA’s homeowner guidance covers additional hazards, including lead, asbestos, pesticides, and biological contaminants. Those hazards can require specialized advice—for example, suspected lead paint or asbestos-containing materials should not be disturbed using general cleaning guidance.
