Clear debris near buildings and paths, store wood off the ground, secure food and waste, and seal gaps into buildings without trapping an animal inside. These steps reduce reasons for snakes to linger; they cannot guarantee a snake-free yard.
What makes a garden attractive to snakes?
Snakes may use sheltered places to hide and find prey such as rodents and insects. Brush, lumber, rock piles, dense vegetation, and debris can provide cover; spilled birdseed, pet food, unsecured feed, and accessible trash can attract animals that snakes may hunt. Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources puts the approach plainly: “The best way of discouraging snakes is to make an area less appealing to them by removing shelter and food sources.”

That means focusing on conditions around buildings, paths, play spaces, and other areas where people spend time—not stripping the whole garden of plants or trying to eliminate every snake. New Jersey Fish & Wildlife notes that there is little a homeowner can do to stop snakes from traveling through a property.
How to reduce outdoor shelter and food attractants
Clear cover where people spend time
- Remove scrap lumber, boards, rock piles, brush piles, and other debris from areas near buildings, paths, and play spaces.
- Trim dense vegetation close to structures and keep grass short where people need clear visibility.
- Keep useful plants and habitat elsewhere in the garden where practicable. The aim is targeted management of high-use areas, not making the entire property bare.
Kentucky, Texas, Montana, and New Jersey wildlife guidance connects cover or debris with snake habitat or shelter for prey. These measures can reduce attractive hiding places, but they do not prevent a snake from crossing the yard.
#1 Best Overall
- REPELS SNAKES: Granules obstruct a snake’s keen sense of taste and smell, deterring them from treated areas.
- FAST-ACTING: Goes to work immediately and helps curb snake activity for weeks.
- APPLY YEAR-ROUND: Shake granules around your garden, patio and backyard perimeter.
- SAFE AROUND KIDS AND PETS: Will not harm plants or animals and is safe to use around kids, pets and wildlife when used and stored as directed – ontains no naphthalene (moth balls).
- COVERAGE: 2 pounds of granules covers up to 1,000 square feet.
Store firewood and materials off the ground
Keep firewood and stored lumber on a rack, away from the house and elevated above the ground. Agency examples differ: Kentucky recommends an elevated rack away from the house; Albuquerque advises a rack at least one foot off the ground; Texas advises keeping lumber, wood piles, and debris at least 18 inches off the ground. These are agency-specific recommendations, not one universal height requirement.
Manage food and waste that can attract prey
- Store pet food, animal feed, and trash securely.
- Clean up spilled or fallen birdseed.
- Where practicable, avoid feeding or watering pets or birds on the ground.
These steps address potential prey attractants rather than snakes directly. Do not use poison to kill snakes or their prey as a garden-management method.

How to keep snakes out of buildings
Yard management and building exclusion solve different problems: sealing a structure can reduce entry into that building, but it does not stop snakes from moving through the garden.
- Inspect likely entry points. Check foundations, doors, windows, vents, and places where pipes, wires, or other utilities enter.
- Check that the space is clear before sealing. Fairfax County warns against sealing an animal inside a building or void.
- Close suitable gaps with durable material. Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says openings as small as 1/4 inch may admit snakes. Texas Parks & Wildlife identifies hardware cloth or sheet metal for holes in wooden buildings or siding. Choose material suitable for the surface and gap, following locally appropriate advice.
Hardware cloth can be used for a structural opening; it is not a barrier to spread around garden beds or a proven all-yard snake fence.

Which measures suit which problem?
| Measure | Target and location | Wildlife risk | Maintenance and certainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear debris, trim vegetation, and keep grass short where visibility matters | Outdoor shelter near buildings and high-use areas | Targeted cleanup avoids traps and poisons; removing all vegetation is unnecessary | Needs upkeep; can reduce cover but cannot guarantee snakes will not pass through |
| Elevate and move stored wood or lumber away from the house | Shelter around storage areas | Uses storage changes rather than lethal control | Requires a suitable rack or raised storage; agency height examples differ |
| Secure food, feed, birdseed, and trash | Potential prey attractants around feeding and waste areas | Does not require poisoning snakes or prey | Requires consistent cleanup and secure storage; reduces attractants rather than blocking snake movement |
| Inspect and seal gaps | Entry into a particular building | Humane only if an animal is not sealed inside | Requires checking openings and maintaining repairs; addresses building access, not the whole yard |
What should you avoid?
- Mothballs, cayenne, and other proposed chemical repellents: Kentucky Fish & Wildlife describes the effectiveness of agents such as naphthalene (mothballs) and cayenne as questionable. Do not rely on them as a proven solution.
- Glue traps and entangling mesh: Albuquerque advises against sticky traps and recommends removing mesh that could entangle snakes.
- Unverified all-yard solutions: The cited agency guidance does not establish commercial repellents, ultrasonic devices, or broad garden fencing as effective general ways to keep snakes away. Do not assume a product is “snake-proof.”
- Poison: Do not poison snakes or the animals they may prey on as a substitute for habitat and food-source management.
What to do if you see a snake
Leave it alone and do not handle a snake you cannot identify. If one is inside the home, keep people and pets away and contact local animal control, as the CDC advises. For an outdoor snake that raises concern, ask local wildlife professionals about identification or removal. Species, protected status, and removal rules vary by location, so use guidance from the relevant local authority.
The recommendations here draw on U.S. federal, state, county, and municipal agency guidance and may not apply outside those jurisdictions.
