You can usually get more usable time from an Android phone by reducing screen and app drain, limiting demanding activities, and using Battery Saver at the right moment. These changes do not require opening the phone or replacing its battery. They are reversible, but the exact menu names and available features depend on the manufacturer, model and Android version.
Start by checking which apps and phone functions use the most power, then change the least disruptive settings first. Keep long-term battery-health options separate from “make it through today” measures: an 80% charging limit can reduce wear on supported phones, but it also gives you less energy for the current day.

What actually makes an Android battery run down?
Battery use is dominated by whatever keeps the screen, processor, radios or location sensors active. A bright display that stays on for a long time, an app doing work in the background, a weak mobile signal, navigation, video, camera use, tethering and graphics-heavy games can all shorten the time between charges.

Google’s general Android guidance does not promise a particular number of extra hours. Treat the steps below as ways to remove avoidable drain, not as a guaranteed runtime improvement.
Do these checks first
1. Open the battery-use report
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- Look for Battery usage, App battery usage, or a graph showing consumption since the last full charge.
- Inspect the apps at the top of the list. Open an app’s entry to see whether it is using power in the foreground, in the background, or both.
The list is a diagnostic clue, not a contest to make every percentage as small as possible. A navigation app, camera or game may legitimately rank high while you are using it. An app that remains high when you rarely open it is a better candidate for a background restriction or replacement.
2. Check for an obvious change
Compare the current report with your normal use. A sudden increase after installing an app, changing signal conditions, enabling a hotspot, or updating software points to a different remedy than gradual capacity loss. Android may also use more power for a while after an update while it finishes background work; Google specifically notes that additional drain can occur after software updates.

Changing every setting at once makes it difficult to identify the cause and can disable functions you rely on. Start with brightness, timeout and the worst background app. Recheck the battery report after your usual period of use, then continue only if the trade-off is acceptable.
Reduce the screen’s share of the drain
Lower brightness and use automatic brightness
Swipe down for Quick Settings and move the brightness slider lower, or open Settings → Display and enable Adaptive brightness or Automatic brightness if your phone offers it. The most useful level is the lowest one that remains comfortable in your surroundings. A display that is unnecessarily bright is consuming power without improving readability.
Shorten screen timeout
In Settings → Display → Screen timeout (the label varies), choose a shorter interval that does not interrupt tasks such as reading or cooking from a recipe. A phone that turns off a minute earlier after every interaction can avoid a substantial amount of idle screen time over a day, although the exact saving depends on how you use it.
Consider dark theme
Open Settings → Display and choose Dark theme or Dark mode when available. Google lists dark theme as a battery-saving option. Its effect is model-dependent, so use it because you prefer the appearance as well as for any potential reduction in display power; do not expect a guaranteed percentage.

- What You Get: Anker Power Bank (20K, 87W, Built-In USB-C Cable), 6.2 × 2.9 × 1.0 in (15.5 oz), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Pixel-only display options
On supported Pixel models, Google also documents turning off Always-on Display and Smooth Display. You will find these under display settings when the model supports them. Always-on information keeps part of the display active, while a high refresh-rate mode can require more work from the display and graphics system. If those features are important to you, leave them on and use the brightness and timeout controls instead.
Control apps that keep working in the background
Restrict only apps that can tolerate delay
From the battery-use report, open an app and look for controls such as Allow background usage, Optimized, Restricted or Background activity. Select the restrictive option only when delayed notifications, synchronization or uploads are acceptable. Messaging, authentication, navigation and work apps may need timely background access; restricting them can make alerts arrive late or stop a task from completing until you open the app.
Some manufacturers put these controls under Settings → Apps → [app name] → Battery rather than inside the battery report. If you cannot find them, search Settings for the app name and “battery.”
Keep Adaptive Battery enabled
Android may provide Adaptive Battery under Settings → Battery. Leave it enabled unless you have a specific reason to turn it off. It learns which apps you use most and can reduce background activity for apps you seldom open. On Pixel phones, Google says adaptation after setup or a factory reset can take a few weeks. That Pixel-specific timing is not a promise for every Android device.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not use a “cleaner” as a first response
Built-in battery reports, app controls and manufacturer support are the appropriate starting points. A third-party utility that repeatedly kills apps can itself run in the background and may not solve the cause. If one app is misbehaving, inspect its battery entry, update it, or uninstall it rather than adding another always-running service.
Use Battery Saver when you need time today
Battery Saver is a temporary runtime tool, not free extra performance. Turn it on from Quick Settings, or use Settings → Battery → Battery Saver. Many phones can start it automatically at a chosen battery percentage.
Google says Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity. Depending on the phone, visual effects may change, some features or network connections may be limited, and apps can be delayed. Work that normally happens in the background may wait until you open the app or charge the phone.

When to enable it
- Turn it on when the remaining charge must last until you can reach an outlet.
- Use it before a long trip, event or outdoor day when you know charging will be difficult.
- Leave it off during tasks that require immediate synchronization, uninterrupted navigation or full performance, unless the phone’s specific behavior is acceptable.
Check what changed
After enabling Battery Saver, send yourself a test message, open a cloud-synced app, and check navigation or hotspot behavior if you depend on them. The exact restrictions vary by model, so confirm the functions you need rather than assuming every Android phone behaves the same way.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Cut sustained high-drain activities
Google specifically identifies several activities that can consume power quickly when used for a long period:
- Turn-by-turn navigation and continuous GPS use.
- Video playback and live streaming.
- Graphics-heavy games.
- Tethering or running a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Camera use, especially long video recording.
- Prolonged use of demanding apps.
You do not have to avoid these activities completely. Reduce screen brightness, download material for offline use when an app supports it, take breaks between sessions, or schedule demanding work for when you can charge. The useful question is whether the activity is necessary at that moment and whether a lower-power alternative meets the need.
Manage radios and location selectively
Turn off Bluetooth, Location, a Hotspot or mobile connectivity only when you are not using it. Quick Settings makes these switches easy to reach. Do not disable radios by habit: connected accessories, emergency functions, navigation and other apps may stop working or behave differently.
Google’s general guidance says Wi-Fi can be preferable to mobile data in situations where both are available. A weak cellular signal can also make a phone work harder to maintain a connection, but the right choice depends on your location and what you need to stay connected.
With Location turned off, apps and features that require it will not work correctly. If you only need to stop one app from tracking in the background, review that app’s location permission instead of disabling location for the entire phone.
Keep the phone cool
Heat is both an immediate drain problem and a battery-health problem. Google Android Help states: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Google also warns that heat can damage the battery.

Avoid leaving the phone in direct sun, on a hot dashboard, under bedding while charging, or inside a hot car. If the phone becomes hot during gaming, navigation, video recording or charging, pause the demanding activity and move it to a cooler place. Removing a thick case temporarily can help heat escape, but do not place a hot phone in a freezer or against an ice pack; sudden condensation can create a different risk.
Use compatible charging equipment
Google’s general Android guidance recommends the adapter included with the phone. Other adapters may charge slowly, fail to charge, or damage the phone or battery. For a replacement charger or cable, follow the requirements for your exact model and use equipment that meets the phone’s stated specifications.
You do not need to run the battery from full to empty to “teach” Android its capacity. Regular partial charging is acceptable; deliberate full-discharge cycles add inconvenience and can leave you with less usable charge when you need it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate today’s runtime from long-term battery health
Charging optimization features are designed to reduce long-term wear, not to maximize the energy available from the next charge.
Adaptive Charging
Supported Pixel phones offer Adaptive Charging, which can manage charging behavior based on your routine. The exact availability and controls are Pixel-specific and may differ by model or software version. Look under Settings → Battery → Charging optimization when present.
An 80% charging limit
Some supported Pixel devices offer an 80% limit. It prioritizes long-term battery health by stopping normal charging at about 80%, which leaves less energy available for that day. Choose it when preserving capacity over the long term matters more than maximum runtime between charges. Do not enable it on a day when you need every possible hour from one charge.
These options are not universal Android settings. Their absence does not mean your phone is faulty; it means the manufacturer or model may not support them.

A practical order of operations
- Review Settings → Battery. Identify the apps and features using the most power, and restrict background activity only where delayed work is acceptable.
- Adjust the screen. Lower brightness, enable automatic brightness if useful, shorten timeout, and consider dark theme. On a supported Pixel, evaluate Always-on Display and Smooth Display as well.
- Leave Adaptive Battery on. Allow the phone time to learn your pattern; Pixel guidance says this can take a few weeks after setup or reset.
- Use Battery Saver strategically. Enable it for a low-charge or unusually demanding day, then verify that delayed app activity and network behavior will not cause a problem.
- Stop unused connections. Turn off hotspot, Bluetooth, location or mobile connectivity only when those functions are not needed. Prefer Wi-Fi to mobile data when it suits your situation.
- Reduce heat. Move the phone out of hot environments, pause demanding tasks if it becomes hot, and charge with compatible equipment.
- Recheck the report. If one app remains an outlier, update it, adjust its background permission, or remove it if you do not need it.
What to do when battery drain remains abnormal
Restart and update
Restart the phone, then install available Android and app updates. An update can temporarily increase drain while the system settles, but a persistent problem warrants another check of the battery-use report.
Use Pixel diagnostics when available
On Pixel 6 and later, Google provides Battery diagnostics. Open Settings → Battery → Battery diagnostics when the option is available and follow the result for your device. Also review battery use by app; Google identifies app use as a possible cause of poor battery life.
Escalate to the manufacturer
For non-Pixel phones, use the manufacturer’s support pages or diagnostic tools for the exact model. Contact support when the phone drains rapidly while idle, becomes unusually hot, shuts down unexpectedly, or shows a battery warning after the basic checks.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Reserve a factory reset for last
A factory reset erases local app data and returns the phone to its initial software state. Back up photos, messages, authenticator information and other important data first. Try the less destructive steps—battery reports, updates, restart and manufacturer support—before resetting. A reset is not a repair for a physically worn battery and may not resolve a hardware fault.
If you cannot avoid being away from an outlet
A compatible USB-C PD power bank can provide another charge while you are traveling or working away from an outlet. It does not reduce the phone’s drain, restore lost battery capacity or improve internal battery health. Check the charging requirements for your exact phone, including USB-C compatibility and supported power delivery, before buying or relying on one.
How to choose among battery settings
| Option | Best use | What it may restrict | Immediate or long-term goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower brightness and shorter timeout | Everyday screen-heavy use | Comfort or convenience if set too aggressively | Immediate runtime |
| Automatic brightness | Hands-off brightness control | May choose a level you want to adjust manually | Immediate runtime |
| Dark theme | Users who prefer a darker interface | Appearance changes; battery effect varies by model | Potentially immediate runtime |
| Background restriction | Rarely used or misbehaving apps | Delayed notifications, sync or uploads | Immediate runtime |
| Adaptive Battery | Ongoing app-management assistance | Less background activity for infrequently used apps | Ongoing runtime management |
| Battery Saver | Low-charge or unusually demanding days | Background work, visual effects, features or connections may be limited | Immediate runtime |
| 80% charging limit | Prioritizing long-term health on supported devices | Less charge available that day | Long-term health |
| Adaptive Charging | Managing charging around a routine on supported Pixel devices | Charging behavior may differ from a simple immediate full charge | Long-term health |
There is no reliable cross-brand ranking from these controls. Compare your own phone by three questions: does the setting exist on this model and Android version, what functionality does it restrict, and is the intended benefit for today’s runtime or for long-term battery health?
