If they still move, look for a model-specific wingtip or stability band rather than forcing a larger tip or buying a universal accessory.
Fit is personal. Ear shape, canal size, the earbud’s housing and the way you move all matter, so no single tip size, material or earbud design works for everyone. The procedure below helps you separate a positioning problem from a size, seal, accessory or medical problem.

Start with the exact model and its wearing instructions
Before changing anything, identify the earbud model and read its manufacturer’s wearing guide. Stem direction, nozzle depth, wing orientation and the compatible accessory family differ between models. A technique that is correct for one earbud can make another sit less securely.
Manufacturer instructions are the best reference for the physical motion. For example, Apple’s AirPods Pro guidance says, Gently insert the ear tip into your ear canal opening.
It then directs the wearer to rotate the stem toward the face and adjust the rotation or angle. Treat that as AirPods Pro-specific guidance, not a universal motion for every in-ear product. Apple’s AirPods Pro fit instructions show the model’s intended position.

- Look for a diagram showing insertion direction, stem angle or wing orientation.
- Check whether the manufacturer provides an acoustic-seal or ear-tip fit test.
A careful fitting routine that works before you buy anything
Use this sequence for both ears, changing only one variable at a time. Clean, dry hands make the test more consistent and reduce the chance of transferring residue to the tip.
- Inspect the earbud and tip. Make sure the tip is fully seated on the nozzle, the nozzle mesh is not blocked and the housing has no crack or looseness. A partially attached tip can feel unstable and may remain in the ear when the earbud is removed.
- Choose a starting tip. Start with the size already installed, but do not assume your ears need the same size. Place the available sizes where you can compare them without mixing left and right tips.
- Insert without pushing hard. Open the ear canal entrance with a gentle upward-and-back movement of the outer ear only if your model’s instructions allow it. Place the tip at the canal opening and use the model’s prescribed angle. Never force the housing deeper to create a seal.
- Make the specified rotation or adjustment. Some earbuds are held by a particular stem angle; others use a twist that seats the housing in the concha. Follow the model diagram. If the earbud rocks when you speak or chew, make a small angle change before changing tip size.
- Check stability and comfort separately. A secure earbud should stay put without sharp pressure, throbbing, or a painful blocked sensation. Check that the tip is not rubbing one small area and that the outer housing is not pressing the cartilage.
- Test during ordinary movement. Walk, turn your head, speak and bend slightly for at least several minutes. Apple’s AirPods Pro guidance recommends wearing a candidate fit for 10 to 15 minutes during normal activity before judging it. A fit that feels fine while still may loosen as your jaw and skin move.
- Change one ear or one variable at a time. If the left ear slips, leave the right ear unchanged while testing a left-ear tip or angle. This makes it clear which change helped.
Choosing tip size: seal, pressure and ear-by-ear differences
Tip size is a balance. It must contact the canal well enough to remain stable and create the seal the earbud was designed to use, but it should not create painful pressure. Your left and right canals can differ, so using different sizes is normal when the supplied tips permit it.
Apple’s AirPods Pro guidance gives two useful clues: a loose feeling or an earbud that falls out can indicate that the tip is too small, while compression or discomfort can indicate that it is too large. Test each size during normal activity rather than deciding from a brief touch. Apple’s tip-size guidance describes these symptoms for AirPods Pro.

| What you notice | Most useful next check | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| The earbud feels loose, leaks sound or drops out during walking | Reinsert at the instructed angle, then try the next larger supplied tip in that ear | Do not assume the largest tip is automatically best; excessive pressure can cause discomfort |
| Pressure, soreness or a compressed feeling soon after insertion | Try the next smaller tip or reduce insertion depth while preserving the model’s seal | Do not push harder to compensate for a tip that is already too large |
| One ear is secure and the other slips | Test a different size or angle only on the slipping side | Do not force both ears to use a matching size |
| Good seal while still, but movement when talking or chewing | Check the housing rotation and wing or band position before changing material | Do not treat a movement-related problem as proof that the tip material is wrong |
| Fit changes after several minutes | Wear the candidate for 10 to 15 minutes while walking and reassess pressure and stability | Do not judge only from the first few seconds |
Tip materials can feel different, but the available evidence here does not establish one material as universally more comfortable or secure. Prioritize the size, seal and positioning that work for your ears and your model.

Use the built-in fit test when your earbuds support one
A fit test is a useful check, not a substitute for comfort. It usually evaluates whether the earbud is sealing as expected for that model. Features are model- and app-specific; many wireless earbuds have no equivalent.
AirPods Pro
Supported AirPods Pro models include an ear-tip fit or acoustic-seal test in Apple’s software. Place both earbuds correctly, open the connected device’s Bluetooth or AirPods controls, and choose the ear-tip fit test when it is offered. Follow the on-screen result for each side. If it reports a poor seal, reposition the earbud first; then try another supplied tip size if repositioning does not solve it. Apple’s AirPods Pro fit guidance explains the supported test and positioning.
Galaxy Buds
For supported Galaxy Buds models, Samsung describes a fit test in the Galaxy Wearable app. Connect the earbuds, open Galaxy Wearable, select the earbuds, and choose the fit-test option shown for that model. Insert both sides as directed, run the test and follow its left- or right-ear result. If the app suggests a change, re-seat the earbuds before switching sizes. Samsung’s instructions are at Samsung’s Galaxy Buds fit-test support page.
A pass does not mean an earbud must feel comfortable, and a result can change if the earbud rotates during movement. Use the test alongside the 10-to-15-minute activity check, not instead of it.

When a wingtip or stability band is the right next step
Retention pieces can add a physical contact point on the outer ear when tip changes and careful positioning are not enough. They are not universal add-ons: the shape, mounting interface and charging-case clearance must match the exact earbud model.
Model-specific wingtips
Samsung’s instructions for applicable Galaxy Buds show a wingtip that faces upward. The wing is placed into the outer-ear fold to resist rotation and upward movement. Follow the orientation diagram for the particular Galaxy Buds model; a wing installed backward can create pressure without improving retention. See Samsung’s wingtip wearing instructions.
Stability bands
Bose sells a QuietComfort Earbuds II Fit Kit that combines eartips with stability bands. Bose says the kit includes three silicone eartip sizes and three stability-band sizes, which can be mixed and matched; the bands hug the outer ear to help keep the earbuds in place. This is an example for QuietComfort Earbuds II, not a general accessory for other earbuds. Product details are on Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds II accessory page.
| Retention option | How it helps | Compatibility check |
|---|---|---|
| Larger or smaller eartip | Changes canal contact, pressure and acoustic seal | Use only sizes made for the model’s nozzle |
| Wingtip | Anchors against the outer-ear fold and limits rotation | Match the exact earbud generation and install orientation |
| Stability band | Wraps part of the outer ear to resist movement | Confirm the band seats on the housing and the case still closes and charges |
| Third-party accessory | May offer another retention shape | Universal compatibility is not established; verify manufacturer dimensions, fit and case clearance |
Before ordering any replacement, compare the exact model name, generation and left/right parts with the manufacturer’s documentation. Remove the accessory and stop testing if it creates pressure, changes the seal painfully or prevents the earbuds from sitting correctly in the charging case.

Troubleshoot slipping by symptom
They fall out only during exercise
Start with insertion and rotation, then test the next size in the slipping ear. Sweat can reduce friction, and jaw movement can change the canal shape. Use a model-specific wingtip or stability band only if the manufacturer lists one. Do not press the earbud deeper or tighten it until it hurts.
They feel secure but sound becomes thin
A changing seal can reduce bass and outside-noise isolation. Re-seat the tip and check that it is fully attached. Try the fit test if supported. If a larger tip causes pressure, return to the more comfortable size and adjust the angle instead; a painful seal is not a successful fit.
One side sounds different from the other
Compare the left and right tip sizes, insertion depth and rotation. Different ear sizes may require different tips. Also inspect the nozzle mesh for debris and confirm each tip is seated evenly. Avoid interpreting a single fit-test result as proof of a hardware fault until both sides have been repositioned and cleaned.
The earbud causes a hot spot or aching cartilage
Remove it, let the ear rest and try a smaller tip or a different approved angle later. A stability band may shift pressure from the canal to the outer ear, but only if the model supports that band. Persistent pain is a stop signal, not a fit challenge to overcome.

The tip remains in the ear when the earbud is removed
Stop and check that the tip is locked onto the nozzle before reinserting. Do not use an earbud if the tip is torn, stretched or loose. If a tip cannot be removed safely, seek medical assistance rather than inserting another object into the ear.
Clean, dry earbuds are more comfortable
Apple advises keeping the devices and skin clean and dry, noting that sweat and residues from products such as sunscreen or shampoo can contribute to irritation. Wipe the exterior and tips using the cleaning method specified for your model, and let parts dry before charging or wearing them. Do not flood openings or use a solvent that the manufacturer does not approve. Apple’s skin and device-care guidance is available at Apple Support’s cleaning and skin-irritation page.
Clean your ears only in the ordinary way recommended by a healthcare professional. Cotton swabs or other objects pushed into the canal can cause injury and change how a tip fits. If debris repeatedly blocks the nozzle, follow the model’s maintenance instructions instead of scraping the mesh.

Samsung advises discontinuing use and consulting a doctor if ear pain or skin irritation develops. Remove the earbuds at once if you feel sharp pain, swelling, discharge, persistent itching or a rash. Do not switch to a tighter tip to mask those symptoms. Apple’s advice to keep skin and devices clean and dry does not replace medical care when irritation continues.
There is no reliable universal percentage for how often wireless earbuds fit poorly or cause discomfort, so a personal trial is more informative than a population claim. If several approved tip sizes and positions remain painful, the earbud’s shape may simply be unsuitable for your ears; a clinician can also check for an ear condition that makes insertion uncomfortable.
A practical decision path
- Loose or falling out? Reinsert using the model’s angle, then test the next larger tip in that ear.
- Too much pressure? Try the next smaller tip or a shallower approved position; do not force a seal.
- Different left and right behavior? Fit each ear independently and record which size and angle work on each side.
- Fit test available? Run it after positioning, follow its side-specific result and repeat the activity check.
- Still slipping? Look for an exact-model wingtip or stability band and verify charging-case clearance.
- Pain or irritation? Stop wearing the earbuds and seek medical advice.
This sequence keeps the least invasive changes first. It also prevents a common mistake: buying an accessory before confirming that the original earbud is simply rotated incorrectly or fitted with the wrong-size tip.
