In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays, and turn on Remember window locations based on monitor connection. When you disconnect and later reconnect an external monitor, Windows can restore windows to their previous monitor locations. The same page also includes Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected, which controls what happens while that display is unplugged.
What the setting does
Windows treats monitor-connection memory separately from ordinary window snapping. The connection setting records where windows were located when displays were attached. Microsoft says that, when a computer is undocked, windows that were on the external monitor are minimized; after the computer is re-docked, Windows puts those windows back where they were. This is particularly useful with a laptop that alternates between its built-in screen and a desk monitor or dock. See Microsoft’s current instructions in How to use multiple monitors in Windows.

Turn on remembered window locations in Windows 11
- Connect the monitors. Plug each display into the computer or dock and turn it on. If you are using a dock, connect the dock to the PC before checking the display list.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Scroll to Multiple displays and expand that section.
- Enable Remember window locations based on monitor connection.
- Decide whether to enable Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected. Turn it on if you want windows on an unplugged display hidden or minimized immediately; leave it off if you prefer Windows to keep trying to show them in the remaining desktop.
- Close Settings, place your apps on the desired monitors, and disconnect the external display once to verify the behavior. Reconnect it and allow Windows a moment to detect the monitor.
The wording above is the exact Windows label. If the option is enabled before you arrange your apps, Windows has no previous monitor placement to restore; arrange the windows after enabling it.

| Setting | Effect | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Remember window locations based on monitor connection | Associates a window’s location with the monitor setup so Windows can restore it when that setup returns. | Use this for a repeatable laptop-and-dock or desktop-and-external-monitor arrangement. |
| Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected | Minimizes windows that were on a monitor as that monitor is removed. | Use it when you want an uncluttered laptop screen while traveling or working undocked. |
These are separate controls. Enabling one does not automatically enable the other.

If Windows does not see a monitor
Window-location memory cannot work until Windows detects the display. Microsoft recommends checking the physical connection to the PC or dock first. Then:
- Return to Settings > System > Display.
- Expand Multiple displays.
- Select Detect.
- Confirm that the monitor appears in the display diagram and that it is powered on and connected to the correct cable or dock output.
If Detect does not add the monitor, the problem is display detection rather than remembered positions. Reseat the cable at both ends, check the dock’s connection to the computer, and run Detect again. Microsoft’s monitor setup and detection guidance is documented at How to use multiple monitors in Windows.
Correct the monitor map before testing positions
Windows restores a window to a display identity and layout. If the numbered screens in Windows do not match the physical arrangement on your desk, pointer movement and restored windows can appear to be wrong even though the memory option is working.

- Drag the numbered display icons so their left-to-right and vertical positions match the real monitors.
- Select Apply.
- Move the pointer across the screen boundary to confirm that it crosses where the two monitors meet physically.
- Arrange your application windows again, then disconnect and reconnect the monitor to test restoration.

Use Snap when you want to arrange open windows manually
Windows Snap is useful for creating an intentional layout of currently open windows. It can snap a window to an edge, resize it into a screen region, and offer layouts through Snap Assist. Keyboard controls and the Snap layouts interface can speed up this arrangement. Microsoft documents those controls in Snap Your Windows.

| Place several open windows into columns, corners, or another deliberate layout right now | Windows Snap and Snap Assist |
| Have Windows put windows back on the appropriate monitor after a monitor is disconnected and reconnected | Remember window locations based on monitor connection |
Snapping a window does not replace the Multiple displays memory setting. You can use Snap to arrange the windows first, then rely on the connection setting when you undock or reconnect.
A reliable laptop-and-dock workflow
- Connect the dock and monitors, then wait for Windows to show all displays.
- Open the Display settings and correct the numbered monitor map if needed.
- Enable Remember window locations based on monitor connection.
- Choose whether disconnected windows should be minimized.
- Open the applications you use at the desk and move each one to its intended monitor.
- Use Snap only if you want a particular size or arrangement on those monitors.
- Undock normally. On the next connection, Windows should restore the windows to the remembered monitor locations, provided the same displays are detected.
A dock is not a substitute for the Windows setting. It simply provides a repeatable way to connect the monitors; Microsoft’s instructions refer to cables connected either directly to the PC or through a dock.
Windows 10 availability and support status
Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions cover both Windows 11 and Windows 10, and the setting uses the same name and Display path on those versions. However, Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you still use Windows 10, the control may remain available, but the operating system no longer receives normal Microsoft support. For a supported setup, follow the Windows 11 path above.
Quick Recap
Quick checks when windows still return to the wrong place
- The monitor is missing: use Multiple displays > Detect and check every cable connection to the computer or dock.
- The screens are reversed or vertically misaligned: drag the numbered display icons to match the physical layout, select Apply, and test pointer movement.
- Windows disappear when you unplug: that is the expected result when Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected is enabled. Reconnect the display or turn that option off if you do not want minimization.
- You want a different arrangement on the current desktop: use Snap to reposition and resize open windows; changing Snap does not change the monitor-connection memory option.
- Restoration is inconsistent: verify that Windows detects the same monitor setup each time and that the remembered-location option remains enabled in Multiple displays.
