Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup, turn off programs that do not need to be available immediately, and leave essential apps enabled. For more diagnostic detail, open Task Manager > Startup apps and use its impact labels to decide what to investigate first.
This can reduce startup activity and background use, but it cannot promise a specific number of seconds saved. Slow starts can also result from limited storage, outdated software, background activity, or hardware that is no longer adequate.

What startup apps are and why they affect Windows 11
A startup app is a program configured to launch automatically when you sign in to Windows. Some are useful immediately, such as a security component or a tool your work depends on. Others sit in the background even though you open them only occasionally. Each enabled entry can add CPU, disk, memory, network, or background activity while Windows is still finishing its own startup work.

The practical goal is to remove unnecessary work while preserving the apps and services you actually need at sign-in.

Use Settings first: the safest routine method
Settings provides the clearest on/off list and is the best starting point for ordinary startup tuning. It manages the registered startup-app entries without requiring registry changes.
Turn off an app in Settings
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Choose Apps, followed by Startup.
- Review the list of apps and the switch beside each one.
- Turn Off any app you recognize that does not need to launch automatically when you sign in.
- Leave an app On when you depend on it being ready immediately, or when you are unsure what function it provides.
The change applies to future sign-ins. It does not uninstall the app, delete its files, or prevent you from opening it normally later. If a program turns out to be needed at sign-in, return to the same page and switch it back on.
How to decide what to switch off
Windows does not provide a universal “safe to disable” list for third-party software. Names, versions, and your own workflow matter. Evaluate each entry against these questions:
- Do you need this program immediately after signing in, or only when you deliberately open it?
- Would a delayed launch affect security, backups, accessibility, communication, or a work requirement?
- Can you identify the publisher and purpose from the name or the app’s documentation?
- Could another person using the PC rely on it?
- Would turning it off merely require opening the app manually later?
If you cannot identify an entry, leave it enabled until you have checked the app’s own settings or support information. Disable one or a small group at a time, then use the PC normally. This makes it easier to identify the change if a feature stops working.

Use Task Manager when you need more detail
Settings and Task Manager manage the same registered startup-app list, but Task Manager adds an impact classification. That makes it useful for prioritizing which entries to inspect first rather than guessing from the app name alone.
Disable a startup app in Task Manager
- Right-click Start and select Task Manager. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps in Task Manager.
- Review each app’s status and the Startup impact information.
- Select an app you have decided does not need to launch at sign-in.
- Choose Disable. To reverse the decision later, select the same entry and choose Enable.
The impact label is a screening aid, not a personalized prediction. It describes the activity Windows measured for that startup entry; it does not translate directly into a fixed number of seconds removed from your boot time. A high-impact item may be worth examining first, but it can still be necessary for your setup.
Microsoft’s Task Manager impact thresholds
Microsoft Support defines the categories using total CPU and disk activity. The publication result for the support page does not state a publication year.
| Label | Microsoft’s classification | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| None | The startup app is disabled. | There is no startup activity until you enable it again. |
| Not Measured | The app is enabled, but measurement data is unavailable. | Do not assume it is harmless or problematic; identify the app and decide from its purpose. |
| Low | Total CPU use is under 300 milliseconds and total disk use is under 292 kilobytes. | Usually a lower-priority candidate for investigation, unless you do not need it. |
| Medium | CPU use is under one second but more than 300 milliseconds, or disk use is under 3 megabytes but more than 292 kilobytes. | Review its purpose and your need before deciding. |
| High | CPU use is over one second or disk use is over 3 megabytes. | Inspect early if the app is unnecessary, but do not disable it solely because of the label. |
These are Microsoft’s classification thresholds, not a benchmark of your entire startup sequence. They do not account for every driver, service, scheduled task, storage condition, update, or hardware limitation that can affect the time before Windows becomes usable.

Settings versus Task Manager: which route should you use?
| Need | Settings > Apps > Startup | Task Manager > Startup apps |
|---|---|---|
| Simple on/off control | Clear, straightforward switches. | Disable or enable commands after selecting an entry. |
| Prioritizing investigations | Does not provide the same impact detail. | Shows startup-impact labels and status. |
| Reversing a change | Return to the page and switch the app back on. | Select the entry and choose Enable. |
| Coverage | Registered startup apps. | The same registered startup-app list, with diagnostic detail. |
| Apps absent from the list | Check the Startup folders in File Explorer. | Check the Startup folders in File Explorer. |
For a first pass, use Settings. Move to Task Manager when you want to sort your attention around measured impact or when you prefer its disable/enable controls. Neither view is a complete inventory of every way software can start with Windows.
When an app is missing from the startup list
Some programs are placed in a Startup folder instead of being registered in the list shown by Settings and Task Manager. Microsoft documents two File Explorer shortcuts:
shell:startupopens the Startup folder for the current user.shell:common startupopens the Startup folder used by all users on the PC.
Inspect the Startup folders
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar and enter
shell:startup, then press Enter. - Review the shortcuts in that folder. If you recognize one that should not launch for the current user, move it to a temporary folder outside Startup rather than deleting it immediately.
- Sign out and sign back in to test the result.
- If the app starts for every account, repeat the inspection with
shell:common startup. Changes there affect all users and may require administrator permission.
Keep a record of anything you move so you can restore it. A shortcut in these folders is not necessarily an unwanted program; it may be required for a user’s workflow.

Why Settings may say it cannot find an app
If Settings displays “We couldn’t find this app,” Microsoft says possible causes include a removable or network drive that is unavailable, a path that no longer exists, or an app that has already been uninstalled. Check the path information shown for the entry before making any further change. A missing path is evidence to investigate, not a reason to edit the registry blindly.

Registry entries: an advanced investigation, not a first fix
Windows also has registry Run locations that can launch programs at sign-in. Microsoft documents these locations, but registry changes can have unintended consequences. A mistaken deletion or edit can affect more than startup speed, so keep registry work for cases where you understand the entry and have a recovery plan.
- Prefer the Settings and Task Manager controls whenever the entry appears there.
- Before changing anything, record the exact value name, command, and location.
- Do not remove an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar; identify the publisher and executable first.
- Create an appropriate backup or restore point according to your organization’s policy.
- If the entry belongs to security, backup, accessibility, hardware, or business software, check its documentation before changing it.
If a startup entry points to a file that no longer exists, uninstalling the associated software through Windows’ normal Apps controls is safer than deleting arbitrary registry data. For a managed work computer, ask the administrator before changing machine-wide entries.

Changing everything at once makes troubleshooting difficult. Use a staged process instead:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Capture the baseline. Note roughly how long it takes from signing in until the desktop is responsive, and list any functions you need immediately.
- Review Settings. Turn off only clearly unnecessary, recognizable entries.
- Restart and test. Check the applications, notifications, synchronization, security features, and peripherals you normally use.
- Check Task Manager. If the result is still poor, use impact labels to identify another candidate rather than disabling every high-impact item.
- Change one group at a time. Restart after each meaningful group so a problem can be traced to a recent change.
- Restore when needed. Re-enable an app or return a shortcut to its Startup folder if a required function is missing.
Do not judge the result only by the first few seconds after the desktop appears. Some apps continue loading in the background, and a change that improves sign-in may delay a feature you use later. Evaluate both startup responsiveness and normal daily operation.

What to do when disabling apps does not make Windows 11 faster
Startup entries are only one possible cause of a slow PC. Microsoft’s performance guidance also points to limited storage, outdated software, background activity, and hardware that no longer meets current needs. An older computer may see little improvement from software-only startup changes.
Check storage and updates
- Keep adequate free space on the system drive. Very limited storage can make general Windows operations sluggish.
- Install pending Windows updates and updates for essential hardware and applications through their normal, trusted channels.
- Remove software you no longer use, especially if it continually runs background processes.
Look for ongoing background activity
Open Task Manager and inspect the Processes view after sign-in. A process using substantial CPU, memory, disk, or network resources may be the real source of the delay. Identify it before ending anything; stopping a system or security process without knowing its role can cause instability. If one application repeatedly consumes resources, check its own settings for synchronization, indexing, update, or background-run controls.
Consider hardware limits
Startup-app cleanup cannot overcome a storage device, memory capacity, processor, or other hardware limitation that is inadequate for your workload. If the PC remains slow after software maintenance, compare its specifications with the requirements of the applications you use rather than expecting another startup toggle to solve the problem.
Use a clean boot only to diagnose a software conflict
A clean boot is different from routine startup optimization. Microsoft describes it as a troubleshooting method that starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and startup programs so you can determine whether background software is causing a conflict. It is not the first step for ordinary startup clutter.
When a clean boot is appropriate
Consider it when Windows behaves normally with some background software absent but becomes slow, unstable, or problematic when everything loads. Examples include a recurring application conflict, an unexplained error after sign-in, or a program that works only when another background component is disabled.
Important cautions
- A clean boot can temporarily remove functionality, including features supplied by non-Microsoft services.
- Record what you change so you can identify the conflicting item.
- Do not treat the reduced startup environment as a permanent configuration unless you understand the consequences.
- Follow Microsoft’s documented clean-boot procedure and its instructions for restoring normal startup afterward.
After testing, restore normal startup before returning the PC to everyday use. If the problem disappears in a clean boot, re-enable services and startup items in controlled groups until the conflict is isolated.
Common mistakes and their safer alternatives
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Disabling every entry marked High | The label measures startup activity, not whether the app is optional for you. | Identify the app’s purpose, then decide based on your needs. |
| Deleting unfamiliar registry values | A wrong edit can affect software operation or system behavior. | Use Settings or Task Manager, and investigate registry entries only with a backup and a clear reason. |
| Removing files from Startup folders permanently | You may need the shortcut later, and another user may depend on it. | Move a shortcut temporarily and keep a record so it can be restored. |
| Changing many items at once | You cannot tell which change caused a missing feature. | Change one item or a small, documented group, then test. |
| Expecting an exact time saving | Boot time depends on storage, drivers, services, updates, and hardware as well as apps. | Use startup cleanup as one targeted performance step and measure your own experience. |
| Leaving a clean boot enabled indefinitely | Some normal functionality may remain disabled. | Restore normal startup after the diagnostic test. |
A practical checklist for your Windows 11 PC
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Turn off only recognized apps that do not need to launch at sign-in.
- Restart and test the functions you rely on.
- Use Task Manager > Startup apps if you need impact labels or a second view.
- Treat Low, Medium, and High as Microsoft classifications, not guaranteed time savings.
- If an app is missing, inspect
shell:startupand, when appropriate, shell:common startup. - Investigate “We couldn’t find this app” paths before changing anything else.
- Avoid casual registry edits.
- Check storage, updates, background activity, and hardware when startup cleanup is not enough.
- Use a clean boot only for a suspected software conflict, and restore normal startup afterward.
The result to expect
Managing startup apps is a low-risk, reversible way to reduce unnecessary work at sign-in when you use Windows’ built-in controls carefully. The strongest result comes from matching each decision to your own needs: keep essential software available, turn off clearly unnecessary launchers, and use Task Manager’s measurements to prioritize investigation rather than to make automatic decisions. If the PC remains slow, broaden the diagnosis instead of repeatedly disabling entries without identifying the underlying cause.
