How to Make Website Thumbnails for an Indian Travel Blog Directory

Make each thumbnail from the travel blog’s homepage using the same browser viewport, then crop or resize it to fit your directory card. Keep the masthead, navigation and a recognizable image or headline visible. There is no universal pixel size for this use: choose dimensions from the card your site actually displays.

1. Decide what each thumbnail should show

For a directory of travel blogs, a thumbnail is best treated as a small preview of the blog’s homepage—not as a travel photograph illustrating one of its posts. Capture the homepage’s first screen so readers can recognize the site from its branding and featured content.

  • Use the same browser width and height for every capture so the previews share a consistent frame.
  • Prefer a viewport capture for directory cards when you want comparable previews. A full-page capture can be useful if the directory specifically needs to show more of a homepage, but it is less suited to a small card.
  • Keep the masthead, navigation and a distinctive image or headline in view where possible. Check the crop manually; consistency is not useful if it cuts away what identifies the blog.

These are editorial choices rather than a tested universal standard. The Screenshots.Dev documentation describes URL or HTML capture, dimensions and full-page control, but does not establish a recommended thumbnail size or compare providers.

2. Capture each homepage

Use a browser or screenshot service

Open each blog’s homepage at the viewport dimensions you have chosen and capture the visible page. If you use an API, set those same dimensions for each URL. Before settling on a workflow, check that it handles the sites in your directory: some homepages may render content dynamically, so a capture can differ depending on when it is taken.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its URL-based request can return an image or PDF; for a directory thumbnail, request an image and configure consistent dimensions. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace https://stripe.com with the travel blog homepage URL. The example saves the response as WebP; configure the request for your desired format and viewport using the API documentation. ScreenshotNeo can remove cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

3. Crop and resize for the directory card

There is no single correct thumbnail width and height established for travel-blog directories. Measure the card’s rendered image area, then create an image that fits that area at the sizes your site serves. Preserve the aspect ratio where possible; if your design uses a fixed crop, inspect the result at the actual card size to ensure it still identifies the blog.

WordPress supports default and custom featured-image sizes, including crop settings. Its documented defaults—150 × 150 px thumbnail maximum, 300 × 300 px medium maximum, 768 px wide medium-large with no height limit, and 1024 × 1024 px large maximum—are configuration examples, not recommendations for this directory. Settings can be changed and themes can register other sizes. See Featured Images & Post Thumbnails and the Settings Media screen.

Resize and optimize the file for its displayed size. A large original is not automatically better for a small card: WordPress’s guidance explains the relationship between display dimensions, file size and image quality. Review Image size and quality before choosing your export settings.

4. Serve an appropriate image in the directory

For a responsive directory, provide image candidates that suit different card widths instead of forcing every visitor to download the largest version. WordPress can generate responsive image attributes such as srcset and sizes; see its Responsive Images documentation. Google likewise recommends responsive image markup such as srcset or <picture>, with a fallback URL in src; its Image SEO Best Practices also covers image formats.

Use descriptive alternative text that explains the image’s purpose, for example, “Homepage preview of [blog name].” Do not turn alt text into a list of search keywords.

5. Keep previews accurate and maintainable

Store the source homepage URL and capture date alongside each directory entry. That gives editors a way to identify where a preview came from and decide when to refresh it after a redesign or if a site disappears. The cited sources do not specify an ideal refresh interval, so set one that fits how often your directory needs to stay current.

6. Check rights before publishing

A screenshot may prominently reproduce a blog’s logo, photographs or other protected content. The available sources do not establish an India-specific legal rule for republishing third-party website screenshots, and taking a screenshot does not itself establish permission. Check the site’s terms and applicable law, and seek permission where appropriate. The WordPress Photo Directory’s requirement that contributors hold rights and submit photos under CC0 applies to contributions to that directory; it is not a general license for screenshots of travel blogs. See its guidelines.

7. Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems

  • Previews have inconsistent framing: use the same viewport dimensions for every homepage, then apply a consistent crop rule.
  • A crop hides the blog’s identity: adjust the crop so the masthead, navigation or a recognizable first-screen image or headline remains visible.
  • The image looks soft or oversized in the card: create an appropriately sized candidate for the rendered card and inspect its quality at that size; do not rely on a full-size original as the only served asset.
  • Different pages show different content at capture: check whether the homepage renders dynamically and whether your capture workflow waits long enough for the content you need. The cited API documentation does not provide a comparative reliability result.
  • The directory’s image behavior does not match the theme: check the theme’s expected dimensions and crop behavior, whether it registers a custom featured-image size, and whether responsive candidates suit the card widths.

8. Choose a workflow that fits your directory

For manual browser capture or an API workflow, compare the factors that affect your actual directory: whether captures work on the target blogs, viewport control, handling of dynamically rendered pages, output formats, batch support, caching and refresh behavior, and current pricing and terms. The cited third-party documentation describes some capture controls but does not establish a provider comparison. If you use WordPress, also check the theme’s image dimensions, crop behavior and responsive candidates before generating a large set of thumbnails.
