1. Set the thumbnail design before capturing
Decide how images will appear in directory cards before choosing screenshot settings. The right dimensions and aspect ratio depend on your layout; there is no universally established thumbnail size for every directory.
- Choose the displayed aspect ratio and whether cards have a fixed image height.
- Decide whether images should fill their frame by cropping or fit inside it with empty space as needed.
- Choose whether a thumbnail should show the first screen of a site or a longer page.
A compact viewport screenshot is usually easier to read at card size. A full-page screenshot can show more of a product’s landing page, but shrinking a long image may make its text and details hard to distinguish.
2. Capture every site in a consistent browser environment
Use the same viewport dimensions, browser version, operating system, and capture settings for each entry. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Consistent settings reduce avoidable differences between thumbnails, though they cannot prevent the sites themselves from changing.

Capture with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in your project:

})();For sites that keep network connections open or never become idle, use a less restrictive readiness condition such as domcontentloaded, then wait for a known element or a deliberate delay before taking the screenshot. A fixed delay is simple but may be too short on a slow page and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
Choose page, element, or full-page capture
Playwright supports viewport screenshots, full-page screenshots, element screenshots, and returning screenshot data as a buffer for further processing. Use a viewport capture for a compact first-screen preview, an element capture when a specific product area matters, or full-page capture when the directory card and its display size can still make the longer page useful.

3. Make captures predictable without hiding useful content
Cookie banners, animations, rotating promotions, chat widgets, and other changing elements can make captures inconsistent. Decide in advance whether the directory should show these elements, wait for them, or exclude them. Do not remove content in a way that makes a thumbnail misrepresent the page.
Playwright documents applying a stylesheet to hide volatile elements in visual comparisons. The same idea can be used selectively for directory captures, for example to hide a blinking cursor or a transient animation. Review exclusions against the resulting image; a selector that is too broad may hide important interface content.

For animated pages, consider waiting for a stable state or applying a narrowly targeted style before capture. The capture documentation does not establish that every dynamic page, login wall, or bot check can be handled uniformly; check results and retry or flag pages that do not produce a useful preview.

4. Crop, encode, and store images using one rule
Apply the same crop and fit policy to every screenshot. If your cards use a fixed frame, crop from a predictable position or use a consistent fit mode so one site is not arbitrarily zoomed compared with another. Preserve the original capture if you expect to revise the crop later.

Pick an image format and quality based on legibility and your storage and delivery needs. The sources document PNG, JPEG, and WebP output options, but establish no universal compression setting. Check that small text, logos, and interface details remain recognizable at the actual card size.

Store the image in storage controlled by the directory rather than relying on a temporary vendor link. Alongside the file, keep at least the source URL and capture date. That makes it possible to identify stale previews, verify which page was captured, and refresh listings after a redesign.
5. Refresh and review thumbnails deliberately
Set a refresh policy that matches how often listed products change. There is no source-backed universal refresh interval. A manual review or recapture after a reported redesign may suit a small directory; a larger directory may automate checks and recaptures. In either case, inspect failures instead of assuming every automated capture succeeded.
Before publishing, verify that the image belongs to the listed tool, is not blank or an error screen, follows the directory’s crop rule, and remains legible at its displayed size. Keep the listing name and clickable destination separate from the image: the preview alone does not establish whether the page or product is current.

6. Choose between running a browser and using an API
Playwright is a good fit when you want capture logic inside your own browser automation and image-processing workflow. A screenshot API can reduce the browser infrastructure you operate; compare options by viewport and full-page support, selector targeting, output formats, timing controls, batch workflow, and where durable images will live.

Should each thumbnail link directly to the captured website?
That is a directory design decision. Keep the image distinct from the listing title and destination, and make the destination clear to visitors rather than relying on the screenshot to communicate where a click will go.
Can I republish screenshots of third-party websites?
Public accessibility alone does not establish permission to copy, store, or display a site’s imagery. Review applicable site terms and legal requirements for your use and jurisdiction; the capture documentation does not resolve those questions.
