To make a consistent set of website thumbnails, capture every destination at the same browser viewport, then display each image in a card with the same aspect ratio and crop. For a short list, save screenshots manually; for a growing directory, automate captures with Playwright or use a hosted screenshot API.
Choose what each thumbnail should show
Decide first whether the directory needs a quick first impression or a longer view of each destination. A standard viewport gives readers a compact preview of what appears when a page opens. Use a full-page capture only when content farther down the page is important to understanding the link. Set one viewport and one card aspect ratio for the whole directory. Consistency makes the grid feel deliberate; it is a design choice, not a guarantee of higher engagement. Figma recommends 1920 × 1080 for thumbnails of Figma files, but that platform-specific recommendation is not a required size for website cards. Figma’s thumbnail guidance.

Pick a capture workflow
Manual capture for a short, one-off list
Open each URL in a browser at your chosen viewport and save a screenshot. This avoids automation setup, but each capture requires manual work. Keep the browser size and crop consistent, and inspect the results before adding them to the directory.
Playwright for repeatable local batches
Playwright runs a browser locally and can save screenshots to disk or return them as buffers for further processing. Its screenshot options include viewport or full-page capture, element screenshots, clipping, output type and scale. The following Node.js example captures the visible viewport for each URL and writes PNG files.

})();Install Playwright and its browser before running the script: npm install playwright, then npx playwright install chromium. Replace the example URLs with your validated destinations. A page can still render differently from one run to another because of its own behavior and the browser environment; inspect generated files rather than assuming every navigation produced a useful thumbnail.

Hosted screenshot API when you do not want to maintain a browser
A hosted API takes a URL and returns an image or document, so you do not need to install and maintain a browser runtime for the capture service. That shifts work to an external service; compare the options you care about, such as viewport control, formats, crop flexibility and whether resulting images can be kept as durable assets. Published functionality alone does not establish a provider’s comparative price, speed, reliability or image quality.
Make the image grid consistent
- Viewport: Use the same width and height for each capture unless a specific destination needs a different treatment.
- Crop: Choose a card ratio and apply it uniformly. If the card crops the screenshot, check that the site’s identity or key visual remains visible.
- Format: Playwright supports PNG, JPEG and WebP, with scale and quality options. Pick a format supported by the directory and suited to the page content; there is no universally best choice established for every use.
- Full page or viewport: Keep the default preview to the first viewport for compact cards. Capture the full page only when below-the-fold material is central to the link.
- Element capture: When the whole page is visually noisy, capture a specific element if it contains the part of the destination that readers need to identify.
Canva’s design-pages API is a different option if your source material is Canva designs rather than arbitrary websites: it returns page thumbnail metadata, but the returned thumbnail URL expires after 15 minutes. Retrieve or consume that URL promptly rather than treating it as permanent storage. Canva design-pages API reference.
Review and publish the thumbnails
- Gather the destination URLs and check that each points to the intended page.
- Choose first-viewport or full-page capture, then settle on a single viewport, card ratio and output format.
- Capture the pages using the workflow that fits the list size and maintenance needs.
- Review each image for blank or failed loads, consent overlays, unexpected popups, and crops that obscure identifying content.
- Use useful alternative text and make each image link to the same destination as its corresponding title. Keep the preview representative of the linked page.

The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Check whether navigation returned a response and whether the page finished rendering before the screenshot. Sites may depend on delayed scripts or behave differently in an automated browser. Try an appropriate wait condition or a deliberate delay, rerun the capture, and inspect the resulting file. No browser capture method guarantees identical rendering on every site.
A consent banner or popup covers the page

The card crop hides the important part
Adjust the card crop or choose a different capture framing. If a particular page’s important content is below the fold, use full-page capture or capture a relevant element instead of forcing it into the same first-viewport framing.

Choose an output type supported by your site and adjust screenshot scale or quality where available. Preview the final files at the size they will appear in the directory; the source documentation does not establish one format or quality setting as best for all pages.

A Canva thumbnail URL no longer works
Canva’s design-pages API thumbnail URL expires after 15 minutes. Retrieve and use the returned URL promptly, or store the image through a workflow that produces an asset suitable for your directory.
Cost, maintenance and reliability trade-offs
Manual screenshots need almost no setup but become repetitive as the list grows. Playwright offers local control over capture framing and file output, while requiring a browser installation and a workflow you maintain. A hosted screenshot API avoids maintaining that browser runtime, but introduces an external service. The available documentation does not establish comparative throughput, costs or reliability for these approaches, so choose based on your own volume, requirements and operational constraints. None of the reviewed guidance establishes a measured click or engagement lift from adding thumbnails.
