How to Make TV Subtitles Easier to Read on Samsung, Roku and More

To make TV subtitles larger or easier to read, open your TV or streaming platform’s Accessibility settings and look for Captions, Subtitles, or Caption style. The exact controls depend on the platform, and a setting may not affect every streaming app. Use the steps below for your device, then check the app’s own playback menu if the change does not appear.

Samsung Smart TV: change caption size and colors

On many Samsung Smart TVs, press Home and go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Caption Settings. Open Digital Caption Options to adjust options such as caption size, background color, and font color. See Samsung’s closed-caption instructions.

Menu names and locations can differ by model and software version. Some caption functions also depend on the program supporting broadcast captions, so an option may not change subtitles in every source.

Android TV and Google TV: find caption preferences

Android TV

Open Settings > Device Preferences > Accessibility > Captions. If your TV offers a caption source selector, choose the source before adjusting the available options. Android TV’s controls are described in Google’s Android TV accessibility help.

  • GREAT FOR SPORTS, THEATER & TRAVEL – Ideal for sporting events, concerts, cruises, dorm rooms, and long-distance viewing.
  • ADJUSTABLE FOCUS – Fine-tune each lens for your preferred viewing distance and clarity.

Google TV

On Google TV, open Settings > Accessibility > Captions. Available choices depend on the device and software. Google notes that caption preferences may not work in apps that do not support them; the Google TV captions instructions explain the platform path.

Android caption preferences also include controls for text size and caption style, but they are not a guarantee that every streaming service will adopt the system appearance. If an app offers its own subtitle styling, those controls may take precedence.

On Roku, open Settings > Accessibility > Caption style. The style controls can include text font, edge effect, size, color, and opacity, as well as separate background and window settings. Roku documents these options in its closed-captioning support guide.

When watching in the Apple TV app, open Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning > Style. Select a preset or create a style with available adjustments for font, size, color, background color and opacity, text opacity, edge style, and highlight. Apple describes the options in its subtitle and captioning instructions for the Apple TV app.

This path applies to the Apple TV app, not necessarily the television’s system-wide captions. Apple also says some features are unavailable on certain smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, or in some regions.

Why subtitle settings may not change what you see

Caption controls differ in both location and scope: a television may expose system accessibility preferences, while an individual streaming app can provide its own playback settings. A style change will appear only when the app and the selected caption or subtitle track support the relevant settings.

  • Open the video’s playback or subtitle menu and look for a separate size or style control.
  • Confirm that captions or subtitles are enabled and that the selected track is available for that program.
  • For broadcast content, check whether the program supports the caption feature you are changing.
  • If the system setting works in one app but not another, the difference is likely app support rather than a need for new equipment.

For a useful comparison, check where the platform puts caption controls, which appearance properties it exposes, and whether the app you use honors those system preferences. Platform instructions and availability can change with device software and region.
