Start with Samsung’s built-in One-handed mode for anything on the unfolded display: open Settings > Advanced features > One-handed mode, turn it on, choose Gesture or Button, and activate that control to shrink the screen. Move the reduced window with its arrow or gray bar. For short checks, keep the Galaxy Z Flip8 closed and use the 4.1-inch FlexWindow with useful widgets. When a supported app benefits from a half-open phone, enable the Flex mode panel. These three approaches solve different reach problems; no single setting makes every app equally easy to use with one hand.
Choose the right one-handed approach first
The Galaxy Z Flip8 gives you three practical ways to reduce stretching and repositioning. Use the method that matches the task rather than leaving the phone in one configuration all day.

| What you are doing | Best starting point | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Reading, typing or controlling an app on the large unfolded display | One-handed mode | The display temporarily shrinks and can be moved toward your thumb. |
| Checking notifications, weather, timers or other brief information | FlexWindow while the phone is folded | You avoid opening the 6.9-inch main display and can use cover-screen widgets. |
| Using a supported app with the phone propped partly open | Flex mode | Supported controls can appear on the lower half of the screen. |
| Launching commands or favorite apps from an edge swipe | Optional One Hand Operation+ | Custom edge gestures provide shortcuts without reaching for navigation controls. |
The most reliable setup is usually a combination: configure the cover screen for quick checks, keep One-handed mode available for longer tasks, and use Flex mode only where an app supports it well.

Samsung describes One-handed mode as a temporary reduction of the Galaxy phone’s display size for simpler control with one hand. On the US support instructions, the path is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap One-handed mode.
- Turn the feature on.
- Choose Gesture or Button.
- Activate the method you selected to shrink the display.
Samsung’s support documentation is written for Galaxy devices generally. Your installed software may use slightly different labels or show the controls in a different order, especially after a software update or in another region.
Position the reduced display
Once the smaller display appears, use its on-screen arrow or gray bar to move the window to the side that your thumb reaches most comfortably. Move it again whenever you change hands. The feature changes the usable display area; it does not permanently resize apps or alter the phone’s hardware.
Gesture or Button: which should you select?
Gesture keeps the screen free of an extra control, but it requires remembering the activation motion shown by your phone. Button gives you a visible control to call up the reduced display. Select the option that you can trigger reliably while holding the Flip8 in your preferred hand. You can return to the same One-handed mode setting to switch methods.

Samsung notes that some functions may not be available in One-handed mode. If a control disappears, an app behaves unexpectedly or a full-screen task refuses to work, deactivate the mode and retry with the normal display. One-handed mode is a reachability aid, not a separate compatibility mode for every application.
Make the FlexWindow handle quick tasks
Samsung lists the Flip8 FlexWindow as 4.1 inches diagonally when measured as a full rectangle, or 4.0 inches when the rounded corners are taken into account. The unfolded main display is 6.9 inches as a full rectangle, or 6.8 inches accounting for rounded corners. The smaller outer screen is valuable because many one-handed actions can be completed without opening the phone at all.

Configure widgets around your routine
Samsung says the FlexWindow supports customizable widgets and quick information. Arrange the items you check most often so they are available immediately after you wake the cover screen. Useful candidates include information you normally glance at rather than interact with for a long time, such as notifications, the time, weather or a timer. Keep the layout focused: the goal is to avoid unfolding the phone, not to recreate every main-screen app on the cover.
Use the folded phone for short interactions
Try the FlexWindow first for a notification check, a quick status glance or another brief action. If the task expands into extended reading, detailed editing or a control that is not exposed on the cover screen, unfold the device and use One-handed mode instead. Whether a particular app or widget is available on the FlexWindow depends on Samsung’s supported features and your installed software; do not assume that every main-screen app can run there.

Keep expectations realistic
The cover screen reduces the need to open the phone, but it is not a guarantee that every task can be completed one-handed. Some activities require the larger display, a full keyboard or an app interface that is not offered on the FlexWindow. Treat it as a quick-access surface and choose widgets that replace the most common unnecessary openings.
Use Flex mode when a partly folded phone is more comfortable
The Galaxy Z Flip8 is listed by Samsung as supporting Flex mode. In supported situations, the phone can remain partly folded while the app places controls on the lower half of the display. This can let one hand hold or steady the phone while the other half presents the content or controls.
Enable the Flex mode panel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Flex mode panel.
- Enable the panel.
When a supported activity detects the partly folded position, use the Flex mode controls that appear on the lower portion of the display. The exact controls depend on the app and software version.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

When Flex mode helps
- Use it when placing the phone on a surface or bracing it in a partly folded position is easier than holding the entire unfolded screen.
- Use the lower-screen controls when the app deliberately separates viewing and controls in Flex mode.
- Keep it as a task-specific option rather than a universal replacement for One-handed mode.
Why it will not work everywhere
Flex mode behavior is app-dependent. Samsung’s guide describes supported uses, not a promise that every application will rearrange itself. If the lower panel does not appear, the app may not support that layout, the phone may not be at the required angle, or the feature may not be enabled. Return to the normal unfolded display or use One-handed mode for that task.
Add edge shortcuts with One Hand Operation+
Samsung offers One Hand Operation+ as an optional Galaxy Store app. It can assign actions or favorite apps to edge-swipe gestures, and Samsung’s support material says you can adjust the gesture handles and their actions. This is a customization layer, not a requirement for using One-handed mode.
Set it up without creating conflicts
- Install or open One Hand Operation+ from the Galaxy Store if it is available for your device and region.
- Choose which side or sides of the screen should respond to edge swipes.
- Adjust the gesture-handle position and size so your thumb can reach it while you hold the folded or unfolded phone.
- Assign only the actions or favorite apps you will use regularly.
- Test the gestures inside the apps you use most, then move or narrow the handles if they interfere with an app’s own edge controls.
Samsung’s instructions can vary by model and software version. If a gesture is unreliable, make the active handle easier to reach, reduce overlapping shortcuts or disable the action and use the system’s Button option for One-handed mode.
Improve the physical hold without assuming an accessory is included
Software can reduce reach, but a stable grip still matters. Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Flip8 at 180 g and says it is 8 g lighter than the Galaxy Z Flip7. Those specifications provide context; Samsung does not publish a one-handed reachability test or an independent comfort score for the Flip8.
Use a case only after checking exact compatibility
Samsung offers a Galaxy Z Flip8 Magnet Case with a built-in magnetic ring for compatible wireless chargers and magnetic accessories. The product information does not say that a grip is included, and it does not promise improved one-handed reach. If you add a magnetic attachment or separate grip, verify that it is specifically compatible with the Flip8 and does not interfere with folding, the hinge, wireless charging or FlexWindow visibility.

Hold the phone according to its position
- Unfolded: keep the phone supported in the lower part of your palm, activate One-handed mode and move the reduced window toward your thumb.
- Folded: use the FlexWindow for short checks instead of opening the phone for every notification.
- Partly folded: place the phone where it is stable before relying on Flex mode controls; do not force the hinge to a position an app does not support.
These are handling strategies, not laboratory measurements. Stop and change your grip if reaching for a control makes the phone feel unstable.
Match the setting to a specific task
| Task pattern | Recommended setup | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Longer work on the unfolded screen | One-handed mode with the reduced display positioned left or right | Some functions may be unavailable while the mode is active. |
| Frequent quick glances | Folded phone with customized FlexWindow widgets | Only supported widgets and features are available without unfolding. |
| Viewing content while the phone is propped | Flex mode panel enabled | Lower-screen controls depend on app support. |
| Launching a repeated command | One Hand Operation+ edge gesture | Gestures may conflict with an app’s own edge interactions. |
| Extra purchase for a more secure hold | Verified Flip8-compatible case or separate magnetic attachment | Samsung’s Magnet Case does not state that a grip is included. |
Troubleshoot common one-handed problems
The One-handed mode option is missing
Check Settings > Advanced features and search Settings for “One-handed mode.” Samsung’s support path is a general Galaxy path, so menu names can differ by software version, model configuration and region. Confirm that the phone has completed any available system update, then search again. If the setting still is not present, the installed software may not expose the feature in the same location.
The screen shrinks, but the window is on the wrong side
Use the arrow or gray bar on the reduced display to reposition it. Move it toward the hand you are using, and repeat after switching hands. The position is a temporary layout choice; it is not a permanent hardware change.
A button or app does not work in One-handed mode
Samsung warns that some functions may be unavailable while the mode is enabled. Turn the mode off for that operation, complete the task on the normal display or try the app on the FlexWindow if it offers a supported cover-screen experience.
Flex mode controls do not appear
Verify that Settings > Advanced features > Flex mode panel is enabled. Then check whether the app is one of the supported activities and whether the phone is actually partly folded. If the app still shows no lower controls, use the standard display; Flex mode is not universal.

One Hand Operation+ triggers the wrong action
Open the app’s gesture settings, move or resize the handle and review each assigned action. Remove overlapping gestures from the side where the app needs its own edge swipe. Because Samsung’s instructions can change with software, use the labels shown in your installed version rather than relying on an older guide.
What the Flip8’s specifications do—and do not—tell you
The 180 g weight and the 8 g reduction from the Flip7 may make the Flip8 easier to carry, but neither figure proves that every user can reach every control one-handed. Likewise, the 4.1-inch FlexWindow (4.0 inches with rounded corners) and 6.9-inch main display (6.8 inches with rounded corners) describe screen dimensions, not a measured comfort or reach score. Samsung’s product page does not publish independent one-handed usability testing.
Use those specifications to understand the physical context, then judge comfort with the settings that match your own hand size, case and tasks. One-handed mode changes reach distance; FlexWindow reduces how often you need the large display; Flex mode changes the phone’s position. They address different constraints.
Account for regional rollout and software differences
Samsung announced the 2026 Galaxy Z lineup on August 6, 2026. Sales began August 7 in select markets, with expansion globally. Availability, firmware timing and menu labels can therefore differ by country and carrier. A guide written for a US Galaxy support page may not match the wording on your device exactly.
When a setting appears different, search the current Settings app for the feature name, read the on-screen description and follow the control shown on your phone. Do not assume that a feature described for one region or software build has identical behavior everywhere.
A practical one-handed setup in five minutes
- Enable One-handed mode at Settings > Advanced features > One-handed mode.
- Choose Gesture or Button and activate it once to confirm that the reduced display appears.
- Move the window to your dominant hand’s side with the arrow or gray bar.
- Fold the phone and configure FlexWindow widgets for the information you check most often.
- Enable the Flex mode panel and test it in an app that supports a partly folded layout.
- Only if you need more shortcuts, install One Hand Operation+ and assign a small set of edge gestures.
- If you buy a case or magnetic attachment, verify Flip8 compatibility and confirm that it does not obstruct folding, charging or the cover screen.
This setup gives you a reachability control for the full display, a quick-access surface when the phone is closed and a position-sensitive option for supported apps—without claiming that any one mode works for every task.
