How to Make the Most of Online Learning Platforms as a Student

Make an online course work for you by turning its deadlines into a weekly plan, studying actively, asking for help when you get stuck, and using feedback to decide what to do next. Start by learning where the course keeps its modules, due dates, grades, discussions, and support options; then build a repeatable routine around the course’s actual goals.

Map the course platform before work piles up

Course platforms differ, so labels and menus will vary. At the start of a course, find the places you will return to throughout the term:

  • Modules, lessons, readings, and assignment instructions.
  • Due dates, announcements, and any live-session schedule.
  • Grades, quiz explanations, rubrics, and instructor feedback.
  • Discussion boards, group-work spaces, office-hour details, and instructor contact information.
  • Technical support and accessibility or disability services.

Put recurring deadlines and live sessions in one calendar you already check. A paper or digital planner can help make dates and study blocks visible, but it is optional: evidence supports planning habits, not a particular planner or the claim that buying one improves learning.

Turn course outcomes into a realistic weekly plan

Choose a few specific goals tied to what the course expects you to learn. “Understand this week’s unit” is difficult to act on; “read section two, answer the practice questions, and explain the main concept without notes” gives you observable steps.

  1. Scan the course schedule and identify the week’s deadlines and learning goals.
  2. Break each goal into actions: read a section, watch a lesson and take notes, attempt practice questions, or draft a discussion response.
  3. Place those actions into realistic time blocks, leaving room for other responsibilities and a buffer before due dates.
  4. Check the plan during the week and adjust it if an assignment takes longer than expected.

Self-regulated learning includes setting goals, planning, managing time, monitoring progress, seeking help, and reflecting. A 2025 systematic review by Ahmad Faza and Ilyana Agri Lestari synthesized findings from 121 articles on digital self-regulated learning; the varied technologies and contexts mean the findings should not be read as a promise that one routine will fit every course.

Make study sessions active, not just completed

Watching a video to the end or clicking through a lesson is not the same as being able to use its ideas. Give each session a small learning task:

  • Before: Write down what you want to understand or be able to do.
  • During: Pause to summarize an idea in your own words, explain how it connects to an earlier lesson, or try a practice problem before viewing the answer.
  • After: Note one question or gap to resolve, then use the relevant lesson, course materials, or help channel to address it.

These are practical ways to monitor your understanding, not a guarantee of better grades. The Institute of Education Sciences describes learning as self-regulated when “the student understands and controls how to learn new material” in its article “Promoting Self-Regulated Learning with Technology.”

Use interaction and ask for help early

Use the course’s approved communication channels rather than waiting until you are far behind. Depending on what the course offers, that could mean posting a focused discussion question, contributing to group work, attending office hours, or emailing the instructor.

Make a help request easy to answer: name the assignment or concept, explain what you tried, and identify the step where you got stuck. For example, instead of “I don’t understand the unit,” ask which rule applies to a particular practice problem and explain how you approached it. The U.S. Department of Education’s 2019 What Works Clearinghouse practice guide for postsecondary educators recommends communication and collaboration tools for interaction and technology that fosters self-regulated learning. These are teaching principles, not proof that a feature by itself creates engagement or learning.

Turn feedback into a next step

Review quiz explanations, rubric comments, and instructor feedback while the assignment is still fresh. Choose one misconception or skill to work on, revisit the related material, and try another example. If the feedback is unclear, ask a specific follow-up question through the course’s approved channel.

Check accessibility and remove barriers early

Online access does not necessarily mean that course materials or interfaces are accessible to you. Where available, try captions, transcripts, keyboard navigation, or readable display settings that meet your needs. If a required resource or platform feature creates a barrier, contact the instructor or your institution’s accessibility office promptly to discuss an appropriate format or accommodation. What is available depends on your needs, platform, and institution.

A 2025 review by Amy Lomellini, Patrick R. Lowenthal, Chareen Snelson, and coauthors examined 91 sources on accessible and inclusive online learning in higher education. It highlighted clear organization, self-assessment opportunities, detailed rubrics, and plain language as beneficial course features. If directions or expectations are unclear, asking the instructor for clarification can also help you identify what to do next.

Review your routine once a week

Set aside a short check-in to look at what you completed, what remains, and what your progress tells you. Ask yourself:

  • Which deadlines or tasks are still ahead?
  • Can I explain or apply the material, rather than only recognize that I have seen it?
  • What feedback or unanswered question should I act on?
  • What should I change in next week’s plan?

Use progress and feedback to adjust your approach instead of treating time logged in as evidence that learning has happened. A 2025 brief by Susan Bickerstaff, Akilah H. Thompson, Keena P. Walters, and Jenivee Gastelum draws on student interviews at eight broad-access institutions and emphasizes active learning, meaningful instructor-student interaction, and adjusting study strategies. Those interviews describe the brief’s context; they are not a population-wide estimate.

What the evidence says—and does not say

A 2025 meta-analysis by Yingying Zhao, Yixun Li, Shuai Ma, Zhihong Xu, and Bingsheng Zhang covered 42 studies from 37 articles, with 115 effect sizes and 11,014 students. It found a small overall correlation between self-regulated learning strategies and achievement in online and blended learning (r = .14). This is an association, not evidence that a specific habit or platform feature causes higher grades. The practical case for planning, monitoring, help-seeking, and reflection is to make learning more deliberate and responsive—not to promise a result.

If a course offers several resources or ways to participate, choose based on whether they match course goals, are accessible on your device and connection, give you chances to practice and receive feedback, connect you with useful support, fit your schedule, and involve costs you can manage. There is no basis here for ranking particular commercial platforms.
