The fastest way to make a small ereader easier to read is to increase the book’s font size, then adjust weight, typeface, line spacing, margins and alignment until letters are clear and your eyes can track each line. Change one control at a time. Kindle and Kobo both document these controls, but the names, locations and available options depend on the model, software version, app and ebook format.
Start with font size
Font size is the most direct adjustment for small-screen reading. A larger type size reduces the effort needed to recognize letter shapes and can make punctuation easier to distinguish. It also reduces the amount of text on each screen, so expect to turn pages more often.

Kindle e-readers
- Open the book and tap near the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar.
- Open the text-display menu, usually marked Aa.
- Use the font-size controls to enlarge the text until you can read without squinting.
Amazon’s help instructions cover changing text size and describe the control as a way to “make the font on your Kindle device bigger.” The exact arrangement of controls can vary by Kindle generation and software version. See Amazon’s Kindle font-size instructions and its text-display settings guide.
Kobo e-readers
- Open the book and tap the middle of the page to reveal the reading controls.
- Open reading settings.
- Move the font-size control upward until the letters are comfortable to recognize.
Kobo documents font-size adjustment as part of its reading settings. The menu wording and available ranges can differ by model and software. Kobo’s accessibility documentation is at Accessibility Features Design Support.

Choose comfort, not a page-count target
There is no universally correct number for font size. Use the smallest setting at which you can identify letters, punctuation and line breaks without leaning toward the screen. If you still lose your place, increase the size another step before changing other settings. A setting that shows fewer words per page can still be the most efficient choice if it prevents rereading.
Make letters darker or change the typeface
If enlarging the text helps but the strokes still look faint, try a heavier weight. Kindle’s text-display settings include boldness controls on supported books and devices. Increase weight gradually: too much boldness can make counters inside letters such as e or a look crowded.
Kobo documents choosing between serif and sans-serif fonts. Serif faces have small finishing strokes; sans-serif faces have simpler outlines. Neither is best for every reader. Try each option at the same font size and keep the one whose letterforms you can distinguish most quickly.

- Leave font size unchanged.
- Test the default typeface for one or two pages.
- Switch to the alternative typeface and read the same amount.
- Try a heavier weight, if the device offers it.
- Keep the combination that lets you recognize words without squinting or moving the device closer.
Typeface and weight choices may disappear in books with fixed layouts or publisher-controlled typography. Their absence does not indicate a fault with your ereader.
Adjust line spacing and margins after enlarging text
Once the letters are large enough, spacing determines how easily your eyes move from one line to the next. More line spacing creates a clearer vertical gap and can reduce accidental line skips. Too much spacing breaks the visual connection between lines and forces more page turns.
Line spacing
Kobo exposes line-spacing controls in reading settings. Kindle’s layout can apply automatic spacing behavior, and Kindle reading apps list spacing adjustments among their accessibility options. Increase spacing one step, read a full page, and stop when your eyes can reliably return to the next line.
Margins and line length
Margins control how far text sits from the screen edges. Narrow margins put more words on each line but can feel cramped, especially at large font sizes. Wider margins shorten lines and create visual breathing room, at the cost of additional page turns. Kobo documents margin adjustment; Kindle app accessibility settings also include margin controls. Availability on a dedicated Kindle varies by book and software.

For a compact screen, a practical sequence is:
- Set a comfortable font size.
- Add a modest amount of line spacing.
- Widen margins only if lines feel crowded or your eyes lose the left edge.
- Read several pages before making another change.
Try left alignment when justified lines look uneven
Fully justified text stretches spaces so both the left and right edges form straight columns. On a small display, short lines can produce conspicuous gaps between words. Left-aligned text leaves a ragged right edge and keeps word spacing more even.
Amazon’s accessibility guidance notes that, for some readers, left alignment combined with wider spacing and margins can reduce eye strain and improve focus. This is an option to test, not a universal prescription. See Amazon’s accessibility overview. Amazon’s publishing documentation describes ragged-right (left) alignment as a layout option at Enhanced Typesetting.
When alignment cannot be changed
Some ebooks specify alignment in their internal styles, and some formats present pages as fixed images rather than reflowable text. If an alignment control is missing, the book may not permit that change. Do not assume that a different font or a reset will unlock it.
Check whether the ebook can reflow
Reflowable ebooks rearrange words when you change font size. Fixed-layout books preserve a designed page, so enlarging text may be unavailable, may zoom the page instead, or may leave some controls inactive. Comics, illustrated books, textbooks and scanned documents are more likely to use layouts that limit ordinary text controls, but the format of a specific title is what matters.

- The font-size control is missing or disabled.
- Changing size alters the whole page as a zoomed image rather than rewrapping lines.
- Text runs off the edge or requires horizontal scrolling.
- Only some sections respond to typography controls.
When this happens, check the title’s format information and your device’s support instructions. The available documentation does not establish one universal workaround for every fixed-layout book. If the publisher offers a reflowable edition, that edition may provide more control; otherwise, use the device’s zoom or an accessibility alternative when available.
Understand Kindle’s automatic typography
Kindle Enhanced Typesetting can adapt a reflowable book’s layout when fonts are large or lines are short. Amazon says it adjusts the layout to reduce large gaps between words and avoid cramped text. This behavior is automatic rather than a separate slider you tune for each page.
Enhanced Typesetting is a book-and-format feature, so it is not guaranteed for every title. Amazon describes the behavior in its Enhanced Typesetting documentation and discusses it alongside Page Flip at this support page. If a large font produces awkward gaps, confirm that the title supports reflow and Enhanced Typesetting before concluding that the font setting itself is the problem.

Compare the controls by platform
| Platform | Book-text controls documented | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle e-reader | Font size, boldness, and automatic typography; some layout behavior is handled by Enhanced Typesetting. | Control placement and availability vary by generation, software and ebook. |
| Kobo e-reader | Font size, serif or sans-serif choice, margins and line spacing. | Large Print Mode enlarges menus, not the words in a book. |
| Kindle reading app | Font size, spacing, margins, orientation lock and Assistive Reader. | App features should not be assumed on a dedicated Kindle. |
Use this comparison as a starting point rather than a promise that every title exposes every control. A publisher can restrict typography, and a fixed-layout file can override ordinary reflow. If a setting appears on one book but not another, compare the formats before troubleshooting the device.

Separate book text from the ereader interface
Reading settings change the words on the page. Interface accessibility settings change menus, buttons and library labels. They are separate controls.
Kobo Large Print Mode
Kobo’s Large Print Mode enlarges text in the ereader interface. It is useful when menus, settings or the library are hard to read, but it does not replace the font-size control for book text. Kobo explains the distinction in its Large Print Mode instructions.
Kindle menus and book pages
On Kindle, use the reading toolbar and text-display menu for the current book. Menu readability may depend on the device’s general accessibility behavior and software version. Do not expect a book-font change to enlarge every label outside the page.
Use reading-app options when you read on a phone or tablet
Kindle apps document additional accessibility controls, including font size, spacing, margins and orientation lock. App controls should not be treated as guaranteed features on a dedicated Kindle e-reader because the software and screen interface differ.
Amazon also describes Assistive Reader, which combines text-to-speech with synchronized highlighting on supported Kindle apps and current-generation devices. It can help when sustained visual reading is difficult, but support depends on the particular model, app and book. Check the availability for the title and device before relying on it. The documented options are listed in Amazon’s accessible-reading guide.
When to switch from visual reading
Use text-to-speech for a chapter, a difficult section or a complete reading session according to your needs. Synchronized highlighting can provide a visual place marker while the voice reads. If the feature is absent, the book may not support it or the app may not be a supported version; verify those conditions rather than repeatedly changing font settings.

A practical tuning method
Changing several controls at once makes it hard to know which one helped. Use this order and read at least a page between changes:
- Set font size: enlarge until letter recognition is effortless at your normal holding distance.
- Set weight or typeface: test boldness and serif/sans-serif choices only if the letters remain faint or confusing.
- Set line spacing: add enough vertical separation to return to the next line without skipping.
- Set margins: widen them if long lines or edge crowding make tracking difficult.
- Set alignment: try left alignment if justified lines create irregular word gaps.
- Check reflow: confirm that the book responds normally and that text is not a fixed page image.
- Save the combination: keep the settings that make recognition and line tracking easiest, even if they show less content per screen.
What to evaluate on each page
- Can you distinguish similar letters and punctuation without squinting?
- Can you move from the end of one line to the beginning of the next without losing your place?
- Do word spaces look reasonably even?
- Are line lengths short enough to follow but not so short that every sentence becomes fragmented?
- Are page turns frequent but manageable?
These checks compare comfort and control, not medical outcomes. The manufacturer documentation describes available features and layout behavior, not a clinically proven best setting for every reader.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon tuning mistakes to avoid
- Changing everything at once: If size, font, spacing and margins all change together, you cannot tell which adjustment solved the problem. Return to the last comfortable combination and alter one setting.
- Chasing words per page: Fewer words are a normal consequence of larger type. Do not shrink the font merely to reduce page turns if that makes recognition harder.
- Assuming app controls exist on an e-reader: Orientation lock, margin sliders and some spacing options are documented for Kindle apps, not necessarily for dedicated hardware.
- Confusing interface enlargement with book enlargement: Kobo Large Print Mode affects menus and library labels; open a book’s reading settings for the page itself.
- Resetting a book that is fixed-layout: A reset cannot make an image-based page reflow. Confirm the format first and look for a reflowable edition.
- Over-bolding letters: Excessive weight can close the counters in small letters and reduce, rather than improve, distinction.
Troubleshoot common problems
| What you see | Likely explanation | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Font-size controls are missing | The book may use a fixed layout, an image-based page or publisher-controlled styling. | Check the title’s format and device support information. Try another reflowable book to determine whether the issue is title-specific. |
| Text enlarges but runs off the screen | The page is zooming instead of reflowing. | Look for a reflowable edition or use supported zoom and accessibility features; do not expect ordinary font controls to repair a fixed page. |
| Large font creates huge word gaps | Justification and the book’s layout are producing stretched spaces. | Try left alignment if available and check whether the title supports Kindle Enhanced Typesetting. |
| Lines blur together | Line spacing is too tight or the typeface is difficult to distinguish. | Increase line spacing, then test another typeface or a modest weight increase. |
| The book is readable but menus are tiny | Interface text and book text use different settings. | Use Kobo Large Print Mode where supported, or review the device/app’s accessibility settings for interface controls. |
| Text-to-speech is unavailable | Assistive Reader support depends on the model, app generation and book. | Confirm that the device or app and the specific title support the feature before treating it as an option. |
When settings are not enough
If the largest comfortable text still feels too small, first confirm that the book is reflowable and that you have adjusted spacing and margins. A device with a larger display may provide more words at the same comfortable type size, but the evidence here does not establish a particular replacement model as necessary or superior. Consider changing hardware only when your current screen cannot present text at a comfortable size after the available controls are exhausted.
The first-line solution costs nothing: these are built-in typography and accessibility settings. Buying a magnifier, clip-on light, stand or case is not required by the documented guidance, and no particular accessory has been shown here to solve a typography problem. Exhaust the controls your device and book provide before spending money.
Lighting and holding distance can also affect perceived clarity, but the documented first-line solution for this problem is the built-in typography configuration. Make those changes before buying accessories or replacing the ereader.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I change first on a small ereader?
Increase the book’s font size first. Then adjust weight or typeface, line spacing, margins and alignment one at a time until letters and line breaks are easy to follow.
Why can I enlarge one ebook but not another?
The titles may use different formats. Reflowable ebooks respond to typography controls, while fixed-layout, image-based or publisher-controlled books may hide, disable or limit those controls.
Best Value
Is left-aligned text better than justified text?
Not for everyone. On short lines, justification can create large word gaps. Try left alignment with comfortable spacing and margins, and keep it only if tracking feels easier.
Does Kobo Large Print Mode enlarge the words in my book?
No. It enlarges Kobo’s interface, such as menus and library labels. Change book text size inside the reading settings.
Why does large text create awkward gaps on Kindle?
Short lines and justification can stretch spaces. Try left alignment if available and check whether the title supports Kindle Enhanced Typesetting, which automatically adapts supported reflowable layouts.

Assistive Reader on supported Kindle apps and current-generation devices combines speech with synchronized highlighting. Availability depends on the particular device, app and book.
Do I need to buy a larger ereader or an accessory?
Not as a first step. Font, spacing and accessibility controls are built in and free. Consider different hardware only when your current device cannot display a comfortable size after those controls are exhausted.
The Bottom Line
Increase font size first, then tune weight, typeface, spacing, margins and alignment one at a time. Confirm that the ebook is reflowable, distinguish interface settings from book settings, and use Assistive Reader when supported. Built-in controls should come before buying accessories or replacing a device.
