A pass on one OS is not evidence that those assumptions work on the other.
Build a CI check that compares the same conditions
Start with separate Windows and Linux jobs, or a CI matrix, that use the same supported runtime version, dependency declarations, and project test entry point. GitHub’s Python build-and-test guide recommends setup-python to select a specific Python or PyPy version rather than relying on the version already on a runner. Runner images change, so explicitly selecting the runtime is more reproducible than inheriting their defaults.
Install dependencies afresh in each job from the project’s lock file or package-manager constraints. This helps expose undeclared dependencies that might be present on a developer’s machine or left over in a runner’s cache. Keep the test command in the project’s normal automation entry point—such as a script or task—and call that same entry point on both systems.
- Declare the supported runtime version or versions.
- Set up that runtime explicitly on each OS.
- Install the project’s declared dependencies using the same lock or constraints file.
- Run the same project test command on Windows and Linux.
- Inspect each job’s logs independently when a result differs.
Begin with the OS and runtime combinations the project promises to support. Add matrix combinations only when compatibility requirements justify the extra CI time and maintenance. A broader matrix is not automatically more useful if it tests combinations the project does not intend to support.

Make shell behavior explicit
CI commands are interpreted by a shell, and defaults can vary between Windows and non-Windows runners. GitHub Actions documents those platform-specific defaults in its workflow syntax reference; this is guidance specific to GitHub Actions, not a universal rule for every CI provider.
If a step relies on shell syntax, specify the shell deliberately and ensure it is available on both runners. Where practical, invoke the project’s language runtime or automation entry point directly instead of embedding shell-specific quoting, variable expansion, or path syntax in the workflow. This makes the test invocation less dependent on whichever shell a runner happens to choose.

Remove filesystem assumptions from tests
Windows and Linux can differ in path conventions and filesystem behavior. The multi-OS examples in Travis CI’s operating-system guidance illustrate why a command or path that works on one system may fail on another. Treat portability checks as a diagnostic list, not as a claim that every issue affects every project.
- Path construction: Use the language’s path-handling library rather than concatenating strings with hard-coded slash direction or assuming a drive root or temporary-directory location.
- Filename case: Match the exact case of files and directories in imports, test configuration, and code. Linux filesystems may distinguish names that another environment has allowed to appear interchangeable.
- Directory order: If test results depend on the order of discovered files, sort directory listings explicitly instead of relying on filesystem iteration order.
- Other portability checks: When a test differs across OSes, inspect executable permissions, line endings, text encoding, file locking, and native binary compatibility as well as paths. A 2026 study by Silva et al. included path separators, line endings, case sensitivity, file locking, encoding, and filesystem block size among portability issue categories; the categories are useful clues, not universal causes.
Make test discovery and imports deliberate
A test can pass locally because the current working directory, import path, or file-name spelling happens to suit that machine. Confirm how the runner finds test files and imports modules, and make the intended project root and invocation clear rather than depending on an accidental working directory.

For pytest projects, follow the framework’s own guidance on test layout and imports in pytest’s good-practices documentation. It describes import modes and tox integration for pre-defined test environments. These details are pytest-specific; other test runners have their own discovery and import rules.
Provision browser and native dependencies when tests need them
Installing a language package may not be enough for browser automation or tests that depend on native libraries. Provision the required browsers and OS dependencies in each job before running tests. The Playwright CI guide demonstrates this setup for Playwright projects and notes that containers can help provide a stable environment for screenshot or visual-regression work.

Keep browser, runtime, and operating-system dependencies aligned across the jobs you intend to compare. Playwright’s CI examples and action or image versions can change, so use the current instructions for the project’s chosen versions rather than treating an old workflow snippet as a permanent specification.

Some behavior is intentionally platform-specific. Put those cases behind small, clearly named OS-specific branches, then test the shared behavior on both systems and assert the platform-specific contract where it applies. Skip a test only when the feature genuinely cannot apply on that platform; a broad operating-system skip can conceal a real portability defect.

When a failure appears on only one OS, first check whether the test is exercising the same runtime, dependencies, command, and test selection. Then inspect the shell, path and filename case, working directory, file ordering, permissions, encoding, line endings, locks, and native dependencies that the failing test actually touches. In an analysis of its dataset, Silva et al. (2026) reported that 62.5% of portability issues were triageable through unique signatures, while 37.5% required more sophisticated analysis. Those proportions describe that study’s data, not the expected split for every project.
