To slow down a video you already recorded, open it in Samsung Gallery, tap Play, then touch and hold the screen over the moment you want to slow. To keep the result, tap Save slow-mo clip (the downward-arrow button). This feature is called Instant Slow-mo; it is available only on select Galaxy devices and compatible videos.
Before you start
- Device and software: Samsung says Instant Slow-mo is available on select Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or newer. This minimum does not guarantee support on every device. Check Samsung’s Galaxy AI compatibility information; feature availability varies by model and software version.
- Video: Samsung lists support for videos up to 4K resolution at 60 fps. Format and model-specific restrictions may still apply.
- Gallery: Open the video in Samsung Gallery. If it is stored elsewhere, save or copy it to the device and open it from Gallery.
- HDR: If an HDR10+ video does not work, try a standard SDR video. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 FE documentation describes an HDR10+ limitation for that model.
For the latest software, go to Settings → Software update → Download and install. Samsung’s requirements and compatibility guidance are described in its Instant Slow-mo support instructions and Galaxy AI setup guidance.
Slow down and save an existing video
- Open Gallery and select the video.
- Tap Play.
- At the moment you want to inspect, touch and hold the video. Keep holding to preview it in slow motion; release to resume normal playback.
- To make a saved clip, tap Save slow-mo clip, shown as a downward-arrow control at the upper left.
The hold gesture is a preview, not an automatic edit. You must use the save control to generate a clip. Samsung’s Gallery editing instructions show the preview and save workflow; button placement can vary by software version.
Adjust the slow-motion section when editing controls appear
On some versions, the editing interface lets you choose which portion to slow and select an available speed. Menu names and speed choices can vary by device and software, so treat these as general steps rather than universal labels:

- Open and play the video in Gallery, then touch and hold to invoke Instant Slow-mo.
- Tap Edit if that control appears.
- Select the portion of the video to slow and choose an offered speed or effect.
- Preview the edit, then save the generated video as a new clip or copy if that option is available.
Samsung community technical documentation gives examples of ¼ speed for 30-fps footage and ⅛ speed for 60-fps footage, but these examples are not guaranteed options on every Galaxy model. The same documentation explains that Instant Slow-mo generates intermediate frames between source frames: Samsung Community: Instant Slow-mo.
Keep the original and share the result
When Gallery offers a choice, save the edited result as a copy rather than replacing the source. Interpolated slow motion can look different from footage recorded at a high frame rate, so keeping the original lets you compare or edit it another way. Samsung says saved clips appear in Gallery and can be shared using the usual Gallery sharing options, including Quick Share, Google Drive, Gmail, or Bluetooth. The save and sharing details are in Samsung’s support instructions.
Instant Slow-mo, Super Slow-mo, or ordinary Slow motion?
| Option | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Instant Slow-mo | Slows an existing saved video, using AI-generated intermediate frames. | You already recorded the action and want a quick slow-motion edit. |
| Super Slow-mo | Records new footage at a very high frame rate. Samsung describes up to 960 fps on supported models; its instructions also describe HD recording and a limit of 20 shots per video. Capabilities vary by model. | You can record the action again and want high-frame-rate capture for dramatic slow motion. |
| Slow motion | Records new footage using a lower slow-motion frame rate. | You want to capture a new clip with a simpler slow-motion camera workflow. |
| Dedicated video editor | Offers editing controls beyond this built-in feature; the controls depend on the app. | You need speed ramps, several slow-motion sections, transitions, music, captions, color correction, or specific export settings. |
For new footage, open the Camera app and look under More for Super Slow-mo or Slow motion; available modes and Auto or Manual controls depend on the model. Samsung recommends good lighting for Super Slow-mo and warns that flickering or fluorescent lights can produce visible lines or trigger unwanted motion detection. See its model-dependent camera guidance.

Why Instant Slow-mo may be missing or fail
The device or software is not eligible
Galaxy AI support is not a promise that every Galaxy AI feature is present. Samsung’s general compatibility list covers Galaxy AI features broadly, while availability varies by device and software. Its regional support material specifically says Instant Slow-mo is unavailable on the Galaxy S23 FE, illustrating why a general Galaxy AI list is not a feature-by-feature guarantee. Check Samsung’s compatibility page and regional notes for Ireland or the UK.
The clip exceeds a limit or uses a restricted format
Samsung’s stated ceiling is 4K/60 fps, not a guarantee that every file at or below that limit works. Codec, HDR, model, or software restrictions can also matter. For troubleshooting, try a locally stored 1080p/30-fps SDR video recorded with a standard camera setting. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 FE product documentation identifies an HDR10+ limitation for that model.
Try these checks in order
- Install available updates at Settings → Software update → Download and install, then restart the device.
- Open the file directly in Samsung Gallery, rather than through a third-party file browser.
- Confirm the video is saved locally, then test a standard SDR clip at 1080p/30 fps.
- Check the exact device against Samsung’s compatibility guidance. If Instant Slow-mo is unavailable, use the Camera app’s Slow motion or Super Slow-mo mode for new footage, or a video editor for an existing clip.
If the video slows only while your finger is on the screen, that is the preview behavior; tap Save slow-mo clip to generate a saved version. Samsung’s Gallery instructions describe that separate save step.

What to expect from the result
Instant Slow-mo is a convenience feature, not a way to recover genuine high-frame-rate detail that the camera never recorded. Samsung’s community technical explanation says it generates frames between the original frames. As a result, the effect can look less natural around fast-moving hands or wheels, water, overlapping subjects, motion blur, fine repetitive patterns, low-light noise, or camera shake. These are potential limitations of frame interpolation, not defects that will appear in every clip.
- Start with the highest-quality original available; avoid a copy that has been compressed repeatedly by messaging or social apps.
- Good light, a stable camera, and clear subject movement generally make the source easier to interpret.
- Slow a short, important moment rather than extending the effect across the entire clip.
- Inspect the saved result for warped edges or unnatural movement before sharing.
- For a new recording of sports or pets, 60-fps footage is within Samsung’s stated Instant Slow-mo input limit; use Super Slow-mo when you need high-frame-rate capture and can control timing and lighting.
These are practical editing tips, not Samsung-certified performance guarantees. Samsung does not state a universal output resolution, frame rate, duration, or file size for saved Instant Slow-mo clips in the cited guidance.
