How to Make Product Demo Videos Transition Smoothly in an OBS YouTube Live Loop

For a single prerecorded demo clip, add it to OBS as a Media Source and enable Loop. For several clips, use a VLC Video playlist and enable Loop Playlist. Use OBS scene transitions such as Fade for changes between scenes—but test the end-to-start boundary of each looping file separately. A scene fade cannot make mismatched last and first frames seamless.

Choose the right OBS playback setup

Use a Media Source when you want one local video to repeat. Use a VLC Video source when you want OBS to cycle through a sequence of files. The choice depends on whether the demo is one continuous clip or several distinct segments, and whether you can install VLC. OBS supports common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. OBS Media Sources documentation describes these playback options and their behavior.

Setup Best fit Loop control Important behavior
Media Source One local demo clip Loop Restarts the file when playback ends; the restart alone does not guarantee a seamless visual or audio join.
VLC Video A playlist of multiple clips Loop Playlist Requires VLC installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Playback may stop while the source is hidden, so test how it behaves when switching scenes.

Set up a single looping demo clip

  1. Create or select a scene: in OBS, use a scene for the demo presentation state you want viewers to see. A scene is the composition of sources in the stream.
  2. Add the clip: in the Sources dock, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source, then browse to the local video file.
  3. Enable repetition: open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. Confirm that the source is visible in the scene and that its video fits the canvas as intended.
  4. Check audio: make sure the clip’s audio is present at the intended level and that no other source adds unexpected duplicate sound.
  5. Preview the restart: let the clip reach its end and watch it begin again. Inspect both the picture and audio at the join rather than assuming the Loop setting will smooth it.

Set up a repeating playlist

  1. Install VLC: VLC is required for OBS’s VLC Video source. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the source: in the Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video.
  3. Build the playlist: add the demo files in the order you want them to play. Check the sequence and each clip’s start and end so the transitions between consecutive items make sense.
  4. Turn on Loop Playlist: this repeats the playlist after its last item.
  5. Test visibility and playback: OBS notes that VLC playback can stop when the source is hidden. If scenes show and hide the playlist source, test the actual switching pattern to confirm it resumes or continues as you expect.

For more on OBS source types and how they differ from webcam or capture-device inputs, see the OBS Sources Guide. A capture card is not required merely to play local prerecorded clips.

Make scene changes feel smooth

A clip loop and a scene transition solve different problems. Loop controls restart playback within a source. A scene transition controls how OBS changes from one scene composition to another.

Use Fade for a gradual scene change

Choose Fade in OBS’s scene transition controls and set its duration to suit the footage. A short fade may suit a quick change between product angles; a longer one may feel more deliberate for a change of demo segment. There is no universally correct duration: judge it against the motion, narration, and pacing of your actual content.

Use Cut when the edit should be immediate

Cut changes scenes immediately. It can be the right choice when the next scene is a deliberate hard edit, such as moving from a close-up to a title card. A fade is not automatically smoother if it obscures detail or makes a product movement look muddy.

Prepare changes safely with Studio Mode

OBS Studio’s Studio Mode lets you prepare or edit a scene in preview while the current live scene remains on air, then transition to the prepared scene. This is useful when a demo contains distinct presentation states and you want to check the next composition before taking it live. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide for scene transitions and Studio Mode.

Fix the loop point itself

Even with Loop enabled, a file can visibly jump when it restarts. The final frame may differ from the opening frame in camera position, lighting, product placement, or motion; audio can also click, cut off, or restart abruptly. OBS documents playback restart behavior, not a guarantee that a file’s endpoints match.

  • Choose compatible endpoints: select or edit footage so the last and first frames have similar composition, brightness, and motion direction.
  • Check the sound join: listen for a clipped word, sudden silence, click, or abrupt music restart. Make the audio ending and beginning compatible in the source edit.
  • Use an intentional transition structure: if the footage cannot join naturally, build a deliberate ending and opening—such as a brief branded card or a shot that visually resets—rather than relying on a scene fade to repair a same-source restart.
  • Inspect repeated cycles: watch the full boundary in OBS preview or a recording, including the first few seconds after restart. A join that looks acceptable once may still feel distracting when repeated.

Configure OBS for a YouTube Live test

Use a stable upload connection and choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the connection you actually have. YouTube publishes different encoder guidance by resolution; a bitrate suitable for one resolution is not a universal setting for every stream. Its encoder settings guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Follow the applicable row for your chosen resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  1. Check channel eligibility: YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility information.
  2. Connect OBS to YouTube: create or schedule a stream in YouTube Live Control Room and configure OBS using the stream connection details YouTube provides. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or show it in a screen capture. YouTube explains the encoder workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Test representative content: run a private or unlisted test with the actual demo’s movement and audio. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion rather than a static screen.
  4. Preview before going live: check the stream in Live Control Room, confirm the picture and sound, then monitor stream health and audio/video during the broadcast. See YouTube live-streaming tips.

Troubleshooting common problems

What you see Likely cause What to check or change
The clip plays once and stops. Loop is off, or the wrong source type/control is being used. For one file, open Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, enable Loop Playlist on VLC Video.
The picture jumps at the end of each cycle. The clip’s last and first frames do not match. Inspect the boundary and edit or select footage with compatible endpoints, or add an intentional visual reset to the clip.
Audio clicks or cuts off at the restart. The audio endpoints are abrupt or mismatched. Listen to the join and adjust the clip’s audio ending and beginning in the source edit.
VLC Video is unavailable or does not play. VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. Install VLC and match bitness; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
The playlist pauses after a scene change. The VLC Video source may stop when hidden. Test source visibility behavior with your scene-switching pattern and arrange the scenes so playback behaves as required.
YouTube reports stream problems or viewers hear/see a poor feed. Upload capacity may be insufficient for the selected settings, or the stream has not been tested with representative content. Choose resolution and bitrate using YouTube’s applicable encoder guidance, leave upload headroom, test motion and audio, preview in Live Control Room, and monitor stream health while live.
