Make the route to your door clear, choose battery-operated lights or glow sticks over open flames, and use GFCI-protected power for outdoor electrical decorations. Then check every light set and give pets a calm place away from the entrance. Those steps address the main hazards: trips, burns, electric shock, and pets getting tangled or startled.
How do I make Halloween decorations safe for kids and pets?

- Walk the route at dusk. Check the lawn, walkway, steps, and porch from the approach visitors will use. Remove or move decorations, stakes, cords, and anything else that could be difficult to see or step over.
- Choose flameless lighting where people or pets can reach it. Use battery-operated lights or glow sticks in pumpkins and accessible displays. If you use a candle, keep it away from combustible decorations and from places where a child or pet could brush against it or knock it over. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Check electrical displays before plugging them in. Use safety-tested light sets. Look for cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections; discard a damaged set rather than using it.
- Set up outdoor power with shock and trip risks in mind. Use GFCI-protected outdoor power, follow the product instructions, and route cords away from the walking path and pets.
- Prepare a pet retreat. Move pets away from candles, cords, and the busy entryway. A familiar toy or food puzzle can help occupy them.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises households to prevent fires and burns and to help visitors see and be seen in its Halloween safety guidance, published October 18, 2022.

Keep the walking route simple and visible. A low decoration, stake, or cord can be hard to spot in the dark, especially where visitors step from a walkway onto a porch or lawn. Place décor outside the route rather than asking children to walk around or step over it.

If an extension cord is necessary, route it where people will not walk and pets cannot reach it. Avoid stretching cords across steps, doorways, or the path to the door. NFPA’s Halloween electrical safety article, dated October 8, 2025, also warns that cords in front yards can create trip hazards.
Are Halloween lights safe outside?
Only use a light set outdoors if its label and instructions say it is suitable for outdoor use. Being battery-powered does not by itself establish that a light is rated for outdoor or wet conditions. Check the specific product rather than assuming that all decorative lights can be left outside.
For powered outdoor decorations, NFPA advises using GFCI protection and testing that protection before each use. Its article also describes U.S. National Electrical Code guidance: outdoor GFCI receptacles in damp and wet locations must be weather-resistant, with a weatherproof enclosure when a cord is inserted. Local adoption and requirements can vary, so follow local electrical rules and the equipment instructions.

Before each use, inspect light strings for damaged sockets, frayed or bare wires, and loose connections. Use safety-tested sets and discard damaged ones. Do not use a set whose condition or outdoor suitability is uncertain.

Battery-operated lights or glow sticks are the safer choice for pumpkins and other decorations accessible to children or pets because they avoid an open flame. If you do use a candle, keep it away from combustible décor and from spots where someone could knock it over, and never leave it burning unattended.
CPSC estimates an average of 5,600 candle-related fires per year in the United States, based on 2017–2019 data cited in its October 18, 2022 Halloween release. That is a general annual average, not a count of fires caused by Halloween decorations.

How do I keep my dog or cat safe near Halloween decorations?
Keep pets away from lit pumpkins and candles, and place decoration wires where they cannot chew or become tangled in them. A cord that is out of a child’s path may still be within a pet’s reach, so check both when arranging the display.

For most pets, the front door can be stressful during repeated doorbell rings and visitor traffic. The ASPCA recommends that all but the most social pets stay in a separate, comfortable room during peak trick-or-treat hours. Familiar toys can provide a distraction; a chew or food puzzle toy for a dog or an interactive toy for a cat may help keep the pet occupied.
Why take cord and candle checks seriously?
The CPSC cites U.S. averages of 1,600 fires involving electrical cords or plugs per year and 5,600 candle-related fires per year, based on 2017–2019 data. These are general fire estimates, not Halloween-specific totals. They are a reason to inspect equipment and manage open flames carefully, not a measure of the risk from any particular decoration.
