How to Make Nintendo Switch 2 Controllers Last Longer Between Charges

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The dependable way to keep Joy-Con 2 ready is to charge them as part of your normal play routine. Attach them to a Switch 2 that is connected to its AC adapter, or use Nintendo’s separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (model BEE-010) when the controllers are detached. Nintendo does not document a controller setting that extends battery runtime, so be cautious of advice promising a guaranteed improvement from changing menus or features.

Check each controller separately in the HOME Menu before you start playing. If the charge disappears unusually quickly, follow Nintendo’s power and software-update checks rather than opening the controller; a controller that charges but still has very short runtime may require service.

What Nintendo actually promises about Joy-Con 2 battery life

The published figure is an estimate

Nintendo Support rates Joy-Con 2 for up to 20 hours of continuous use. Nintendo also says the duration varies with the software being played and the actions performed with the controllers. “Up to” is therefore a ceiling under Nintendo’s stated conditions, not a guaranteed result for every game, player or session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The figure comes from Nintendo Support, not an independently published laboratory test. Your result can be shorter without indicating a fault, particularly when a game makes frequent use of controller inputs or other actions that Nintendo says affect duration.

There is no documented runtime switch

Nintendo’s reviewed support material does not identify a Joy-Con 2 setting that extends the time between charges. Do not treat unverified suggestions about disabling a particular feature, changing a menu option or reducing an unspecified controller function as an official battery-saving method. The documented way to stay ready is to charge the controllers consistently.

Use one of Nintendo’s two documented charging methods

Both routes replenish the same built-in batteries. Neither changes Nintendo’s published runtime estimate; the difference is whether you charge the controllers attached to the console or detached in an accessory.

Method What you need Best use
Attach Joy-Con 2 to Switch 2 Switch 2 connected to its AC adapter and powered on or in Sleep Mode Charging while the console is already connected or stored
Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (BEE-010) Separately sold grip connected to the dock with its included USB cable, or connected directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter Charging detached controllers without attaching them to the console

Charge while attached to the console

Slide each Joy-Con 2 onto the Switch 2. For charging to take place, Nintendo specifies that the console must be connected to the AC adapter and either powered on or in Sleep Mode. This is the simplest option when you finish a handheld session and put the console on charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make sure the controllers are fully seated on the console rails. If one controller does not appear to be charging, remove it and attach it again, then confirm its status from the console’s controller-battery display. A console that is not connected to the AC adapter is not the charging condition Nintendo documents for this method.

Use the Charging Grip when controllers are detached

The Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010, is sold separately. Insert the detached controllers into the grip, then connect the grip either to the dock with the USB cable supplied with it or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.

The grip solves a convenience problem: both controllers can be charging together while they are not mounted on the console. It is not an extended battery, and it does not add capacity to an individual Joy-Con 2 charge. Choose it when you normally leave the console docked, use the controllers away from the console, or want a fixed charging location for detached controllers.

Plan around the approximately 3.5-hour charge time

Nintendo lists approximately 3.5 hours for a full Joy-Con 2 charge. That is long enough that charging after play is more reliable than waiting until just before a tournament or trip. Start the charge when you finish a substantial session, then leave the console or grip connected while you do something else. The figure is approximate, so do not treat exactly 210 minutes as a promise that applies to every battery state or setup.

If you need the controllers soon, use whichever documented route is already set up. Attaching them to the console is convenient after handheld play; the BEE-010 grip is quicker to use when the controllers are already detached. Neither route gives one controller priority or increases the total operating time of a single full charge.

Build a routine that prevents empty controllers

A short routine is more reliable than waiting for a low-battery warning during a game. Use the following sequence after play and before travel.

  1. Check both controllers. Open the HOME Menu, select Controllers, and view the approximate battery level shown for each actively paired Joy-Con 2.
  2. Decide where they will be used next. If they will remain attached to the console, use console charging. If they will stay detached, place them in the BEE-010 Charging Grip.
  3. Connect the required power source. For console charging, connect the Switch 2 to its AC adapter and leave it powered on or in Sleep Mode. For the grip, connect the grip to the dock with its included USB cable or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.
  4. Leave enough time for a full charge. Nintendo lists approximately 3.5 hours for a full Joy-Con 2 charge. Treat this as an approximate charge time rather than a timer that applies identically in every situation.
  5. Check the individual levels again. Before a long session, return to HOME Menu > Controllers and verify both actively paired controllers instead of assuming that one charged controller means the other did too.
  6. Repeat after every substantial session. Reconnecting the controllers when you finish removes the need to estimate how much battery remains later.

For handheld play

When you finish playing handheld, leave the Joy-Con 2 attached and connect the Switch 2 to its AC adapter. The console can remain in Sleep Mode while the controllers charge. This avoids having to find the controllers separately before the next session.

For detached or multiplayer use

If you regularly remove the controllers, put them in the Charging Grip as soon as the session ends. Keep the grip’s cable connected to the dock or to the Switch 2 AC adapter so it is ready as a charging station. The accessory’s value here is placement and convenience, not longer operation per charge.

Before taking the controllers away from home

Pair the controllers, open the Controllers screen and check each approximate level. If either level is low, use the attached-console route or the Charging Grip before packing. This check is especially useful when one Joy-Con 2 was used more heavily than the other.

How to check the battery of each controller

From the Switch 2 HOME Menu, open Controllers. The screen shows an approximate battery level for each controller that is actively paired. Looking at the individual entries matters because the two Joy-Con 2 units do not necessarily have identical charge levels after separate use.

The display is an approximation, so use it as a readiness check rather than a minute-by-minute prediction. If the indication looks implausible, or the level falls much faster than your normal experience, move to troubleshooting instead of repeatedly recalibrating by guesswork.

Troubleshoot a controller that seems to run down too quickly

First separate a display problem from a real runtime problem

  • If the controller operates normally but the percentage or icon looks wrong, treat it as a battery-indication issue.
  • If the controller shuts down soon after charging, treat it as a short-runtime issue.
  • If it will not turn on or will not charge, treat it as a power or connection issue.

Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance addresses all three situations. The symptoms can look similar, so note what happens immediately after charging and what the Controllers screen reports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Nintendo’s basic checks

  1. Perform the power checks in Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 troubleshooting instructions for the symptom you are seeing.
  2. Install the latest Switch 2 system update before judging battery behavior again. Nintendo specifically recommends checking that the system is up to date.
  3. Charge the affected controller using one of the documented routes, then observe whether the indication and operating time remain abnormal.

Do not infer a hardware failure from one unusually short session alone, because Nintendo says software and controller actions affect duration. A repeated pattern after the power checks and an up-to-date system is more significant.

Know when service is the right next step

Nintendo says a Joy-Con 2 that charges but still does not last long after troubleshooting will need service. Use that guidance instead of continuing to cycle the battery or trying unapproved repairs. The service recommendation applies to the affected controller; check each unit separately.

Do not replace the built-in battery yourself

Nintendo’s safety booklet says the built-in battery should not be replaced by the user and that battery replacement must be carried out by a qualified professional. Do not open the controller to install a replacement cell or attempt a repair based on online teardown instructions. Besides creating a safety risk, opening the unit can complicate later service.

Store Joy-Con 2 safely during a long break

If you will not use the controllers for an extended period, Nintendo’s safety guidance says to charge the batteries at least once every six months. Put a reminder on your calendar, charge the controllers using the console or Charging Grip, and return them to storage after the check.

The same safety guidance covers the built-in nature of the batteries: do not plan on removing them for storage, and do not perform a replacement yourself. Long-term storage maintenance is about periodically charging the existing batteries, not installing a larger one.

What the Charging Grip can and cannot do

What it does

  • Holds detached Joy-Con 2 controllers while they charge.
  • Accepts power from the dock through the included USB cable.
  • Can also connect directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.
  • Provides a fixed place to return controllers after use.

What it does not do

  • It does not increase the battery capacity of either controller.
  • It does not make an individual charge last longer.
  • It does not change Nintendo’s up-to-20-hour estimate.

Buy or use the grip for detached-controller convenience. If your only goal is more operating time from one charge, the accessory is not a battery upgrade. Because Nintendo lists it as a separately sold accessory, check the current package contents and compatibility when buying; the documented requirement is the BEE-010 model and its included USB cable.

Choose the simplest setup for your play style

Your situation Practical choice Reason
You usually play handheld and put the console away afterward Attach both Joy-Con 2 to the Switch 2 and connect the console to its AC adapter The controllers charge in their normal attached position while the console is powered on or in Sleep Mode
You remove the controllers for tabletop or multiplayer play Return them to the BEE-010 Charging Grip after the session They can charge while detached from the console
You are unsure whether one controller is ready HOME Menu > Controllers The screen reports an approximate level for each actively paired controller
A controller charges but repeatedly runs down very quickly Run Nintendo’s power checks, update the system, then seek service if the problem remains Nintendo directs persistent short-runtime cases to service
You are storing the controllers for months Charge them at least once every six months Nintendo’s safety guidance specifies this interval for extended non-use

Common mistakes that waste a charge

  • Charging only one unit: A pair can have different levels after separate use. Always inspect both entries on the Controllers screen.
  • Assuming Sleep Mode means no charging: Nintendo specifically allows charging while the Switch 2 is in Sleep Mode, provided the console is connected to its AC adapter.
  • Leaving a detached controller outside the charging setup: A controller in a case, on a table or in another room will not gain charge. Return it to the console or BEE-010 grip.
  • Expecting the grip to repair a weak battery: The grip supplies a charging location; it cannot restore lost capacity or alter the runtime estimate.
  • Using the 20-hour figure as a deadline: It is an “up to” estimate and varies with software and actions, so plan charging before a long session.
  • Opening the controller to save money: Nintendo directs battery replacement to a qualified professional. Unapproved disassembly is not a documented fix.

Limits of the battery advice

Nintendo has published the runtime estimate, charge time, charging routes and troubleshooting path described here, but not an independent runtime test or a Joy-Con 2-specific battery-degradation statistic. Do not substitute Switch 2 console-battery figures for controller figures; they describe different batteries and different use conditions.

For the same reason, a controller that falls short of the maximum estimate is not automatically defective. The useful tests are whether it charges correctly, whether the battery indication behaves plausibly, and whether the short runtime persists after Nintendo’s power checks and the latest system update.

Quick checklist

  • Check each actively paired controller in HOME Menu > Controllers.
  • Charge attached Joy-Con 2 with the Switch 2 connected to its AC adapter and powered on or in Sleep Mode.
  • For detached controllers, use the BEE-010 Charging Grip with its included USB cable and a powered dock, or connect the grip directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.
  • Allow approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge.
  • Do not expect the grip to extend runtime or a menu setting to guarantee longer battery life.
  • Install the latest system update when battery indication or runtime seems abnormal.
  • Use qualified service for a controller that still has unusually short runtime after troubleshooting.
  • Never open the controller or replace its built-in battery yourself.
  • During extended storage, charge the batteries at least once every six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Joy-Con 2 charge last?

Nintendo Support rates Joy-Con 2 for up to 20 hours of continuous use. Actual runtime varies with the software and the actions being used with the controllers, so the figure is an estimate rather than a guarantee.

How long does it take to fully charge Joy-Con 2?

Nintendo lists approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge. Use that as a planning estimate, not an exact timer for every charging situation.

How do you charge the Joy-Con 2 controllers?

Attach them to a Switch 2 connected to its AC adapter while the console is powered on or in Sleep Mode. If the controllers are detached, place them in the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010, connected to the dock with its included USB cable or directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter.

Does the Charging Grip make Joy-Con 2 last longer?

No. The BEE-010 grip charges detached controllers but does not increase battery capacity or extend an individual charge. Its benefit is convenience and a fixed charging location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I see the battery level for each Joy-Con 2?

Open the Switch 2 HOME Menu and select Controllers. The screen shows an approximate level for each actively paired controller.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Why does one Joy-Con 2 run down before the other?

The controllers may have been used separately or for different actions. Check each entry individually on the Controllers screen and charge both after substantial play rather than assuming they have equal levels.

What should I do if Joy-Con 2 battery life seems unusually short?

Check the individual battery indication, perform Nintendo’s power troubleshooting checks, and install the latest Switch 2 system update. If the controller charges but still has unusually short runtime, Nintendo says it needs service.

Can I replace a Joy-Con 2 battery myself?

No. Nintendo’s safety guidance says the built-in battery must be replaced by a qualified professional. Do not open the controller or install a replacement cell yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I store Joy-Con 2 for several months?

Nintendo’s safety guidance says to charge the batteries at least once every six months during extended non-use. Use the console or Charging Grip for that periodic charge; do not remove the built-in batteries.

Is there a setting that guarantees longer Joy-Con 2 battery life?

Nintendo does not document a Joy-Con 2 setting that extends runtime. Be skeptical of claims that a particular menu change guarantees longer use, and rely on regular charging instead.

The Bottom Line

Nintendo’s documented answer is a charging routine, not a hidden power-saving switch: Joy-Con 2 are rated for up to 20 hours, take approximately 3.5 hours to fully charge, and can be charged attached to an AC-powered Switch 2 or in the BEE-010 Charging Grip. Check each controller in HOME Menu > Controllers, update the system and seek qualified service if a charged controller still runs down unusually fast.
