To make a dark-looking show easier to see, adjust picture settings on the TV or device running Netflix; on some compatible setups, you can also compare the picture with Netflix’s HDR setting on and off.
How to adjust Netflix brightness on your TV
Start with the television’s own picture or display settings while Netflix is playing. Menu names and steps vary by manufacturer and model, so check the TV’s manual if you cannot find the controls. Netflix’s help center likewise directs TV viewers to the manufacturer for device-specific instructions and notes that Netflix customer service cannot provide those steps. Netflix’s dark-picture troubleshooting guide recommends changing the device’s brightness level or HDR settings when a show or movie is not bright enough.

- Play the title and scene that looks too dark.
- Open the TV’s picture or display settings using its remote or on-screen menu.
- Look for picture brightness or HDR-related controls. The exact labels and location depend on the TV model.
- Change one setting at a time, then check the same scene before making another adjustment.
There is no universal brightness number to use: TV controls and picture modes differ, and a setting that improves shadow detail on one set may make highlights or colors less satisfactory on another.

How to turn HDR off in Netflix
On some HDR-capable TV or device setups, Netflix provides an HDR On/Off option. Netflix says this option requires a Premium plan and an HDR-compatible device, but it does not appear on every compatible TV.

- Open the Netflix home screen menu.
- Select Get Help, then Video.
- Select HDR On or HDR Off, if the option is available.
The menu’s position can vary between Netflix app versions. If you do not see the HDR option, use the TV or streaming device’s own picture settings instead. Netflix describes HDR adjustment as a possible troubleshooting step, not proof that HDR is the cause of every dim-looking title.
Compare the picture before choosing a setting
Use the same scene and room lighting to compare HDR On with HDR Off. Check whether dark areas are easier to distinguish, while also considering whether bright highlights and colors still look acceptable. If switching HDR off does not help, or the image looks worse, switch it back to your preferred setting.

Why Netflix may not show HDR or 4K
Netflix says playback quality depends on the full chain of supported components. The plan, TV, streaming player or receiver, cable, and the HDMI port in use can all matter for 4K or HDR. If a component does not meet the requirements, Netflix uses the highest quality available for that part of the setup. Netflix’s video-quality guide explains these requirements.

When a TV picture mode restricts the controls
Some televisions have model-specific modes that affect which picture controls are available. Netflix says some 2019 and 2020 Panasonic TVs include Netflix Calibrated Mode, and some 2020 models include Filmmaker Mode; its Panasonic TV support information directs users of supported models to the TV’s Menu > Picture area. Availability depends on the model.
Sony has also offered Netflix Calibrated Mode on supported TVs. Sony says picture-mode settings are grayed out while that mode is on, which can explain why some controls cannot be changed. The feature is not available on every TV and is not a general brightness fix. See Sony’s explanation of Netflix Calibrated Mode for supported-model behavior. Netflix announced the mode for supported Sony TVs in 2018 as a way to bring the display closer to creators’ mastering conditions: About Netflix’s announcement.
