Most crowns in The Witcher 3 come from three sources: contract rewards, selling loot to the right merchant, and optional wagers. Repeatable bandit farming can add more in the late game, but it depends on version-specific behavior and is not the core method. Early on, prioritize contracts and exploration, then sell each item category to a merchant who specializes in it rather than emptying your pack at one vendor.
Start with contracts
Contracts are the most dependable early income. Take jobs from notice boards, and where the contract giver allows it, negotiate the reward before you accept. Completing the job pays the agreed amount and often leaves a monster trophy you can sell. Prima Games’ guide puts several Velen contracts at roughly 250 crowns each. Treat that as an approximate figure from one guide, not a fixed payout.

The early and mid-game routine
- Accept contracts from notice boards and negotiate the reward wherever the giver allows it.
- Explore points of interest and treasure hunts once your level suits the area. Pick up weapons, armor, valuables and spare trophies.
- Skip low-value bulk. Carry the items that sell for the most relative to the inventory space they take.
- Keep crafting and alchemy materials. Do not sell every ingredient early, because you may need them for recipes.
- Sell each category to a specialist merchant. When a merchant runs out of funds, return later or use a second vendor.
This routine advances ordinary play as well as your purse, which is why it works better as a base than as a grind.

Match each item to the right merchant
Prima Games’ guide, in its “Shops, Merchants, and Economy” section, explains that a sale price depends on the merchant’s specialty, the region, the item type, where the item came from, and other price modifiers. Dumping everything at a general vendor ignores all of those factors.
| Merchant | Buys from you | Notes from the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Blacksmith | Weapons | Specialty merchant for weapon sales |
| Armorer | Armor | Specialty merchant for armor sales |
| Innkeeper | Food and drink | Specialty merchant for consumables |
Merchants run on finite cash. The guide states: “If a Merchant’s funds are depleted, they are temporarily unable to purchase additional items from you.” Funds replenish over time, but the guide does not give a refresh interval, so split large hauls across several merchants.
What not to sell
A secondary guide, How To Video Game’s money tips, advises against selling everything you find. Keep these categories:
- Quest items, which may be needed to finish a job.
- Diagrams, which unlock crafting options.
- Mutagens, which are useful for character development.
- Crafting and alchemy materials you have not yet used.
Optional wagers
Gwent wagers, Velen fistfights and Crow’s Perch races are extra sources of crowns. Prima Games’ guide gives maximum-wager totals for two of them:
Rank #2
- If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
| Activity | Quest named in the guide | Maximum total per the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Velen fistfights | Fists of Fury | 540 crowns, at maximum bet |
| Crow’s Perch races | Crow’s Perch race quest | 370 crowns, at maximum wager |
These are quest-specific totals, not an hourly rate. The guide gives no figure for Gwent wagers.

Gamer Guides, last updated 22 August 2024, describes a repeatable loop of bandit camps. Its listed repeat-spawn locations are:
- Northeast of Alness
- Southwest of Drahim Castle
- Southeast of Ursten
- North of Giant’s Toes
The guide estimates 50–70 crowns for each late-game weapon and about 600–800 crowns per circuit. Its page also says Devil’s Pit stopped respawning with Patch 4.0, so leave it out of your route. Before building a plan around this loop, confirm that enemies still respawn in your version. The estimates are the guide’s own and have not been independently measured.

Some recent secondary guides discuss a 2026 remastered release and say it changed nothing about prices, merchant funds, contract rewards or haggling.
