The fastest well-supported way to build wealth in GTA 5 Story Mode is to invest in the stock movements tied to Lester’s assassination missions. Complete The Hotel Assassination when the story requires it, but save the other four assassinations until after the main story and final heist payout. Then invest separately with Michael, Franklin, and Trevor before or after each mission as appropriate, and sell by watching each character’s portfolio rather than relying on a fixed return target.
Why Lester’s assassination missions are the best route to fast cash
These missions trigger scripted changes in particular companies’ share prices, giving you a more directed opportunity than ordinary stock speculation. The key advantage of waiting is simple: the larger your characters’ cash balances are when you make the trades, the more money you can put to work. GameTruth’s guide, updated October 3, 2026, and Vandal’s stock-market guide both recommend delaying the four optional assassinations until after the main story and final heist payout.

The Hotel Assassination is the exception: story progression requires it. The other four can be postponed, but you will eventually need to complete all five Lester assassinations for 100% completion. If you are prioritizing maximum later investment capital, do the required Hotel mission and hold the remaining four until the campaign has paid out.
Before you trade: protect your save and check the exchanges
Use separate save slots
Make a manual save before buying shares, and keep a safe save before each assassination mission. Use a separate slot so a missed trade or an inconvenient price movement does not overwrite your earlier position. This matters because replaying a mission does not apply its stock-market consequences to the persistent campaign save. If you miss a scripted opportunity, you need a suitable earlier save or a new playthrough to recover it.

Invest with all three protagonists
Michael, Franklin, and Trevor each have separate cash balances and portfolios. Before a trade, switch to each character and place that character’s investment individually. A purchase made by one protagonist does not invest the others’ money for them.
Confirm BAWSAQ is working before relying on it
LCN’s relevant movements are mainly tied to events in your local story save and normally do not require online service. BAWSAQ is available from Story Mode but depends on an internet connection and Rockstar services. Before a mission investment that uses BAWSAQ, check that the exchange opens with current listings. If it is unavailable or appears stale, keep your pre-mission save and wait for service to return or proceed without that trade. Do not buy a similarly named company on the wrong exchange.

The Lester stock-trading sequence
Use this sequence for the assassination opportunities. “Before” and “after” refer to when you make the purchase relative to the mission; they do not imply a guaranteed percentage gain. The sources do not establish fixed current peak returns, and prices can vary with the game version and market state.

| The Hotel Assassination | Betta Pharmaceuticals (BET), BAWSAQ | Before the mission | After the mission, Bilkinton Research (BIL), LCN, is a recovery opportunity after its price falls. |
| The Multi Target Assassination | Debonaire (DEB), LCN | Before the mission | After selling the rise, Redwood Cigarettes (RWC), LCN, is a recovery opportunity after its decline. |

Step-by-step for each trade
- Make a manual save. Keep a separate slot before buying shares and another safe save before entering the mission.
- Switch to Michael, Franklin, and Trevor in turn. For each character, buy the listed company on the specified exchange. For The Bus Assassination, wait until after the mission and the price decline before buying Vapid.
- Complete the mission or advance time in the game. Check each character’s portfolio as the market moves; each portfolio must be monitored separately.
- Sell when the rise levels off. Use the in-game portfolio return as your guide. When the return stops rising, sell rather than holding out for a fixed percentage taken from an older guide.
- For a recovery trade, wait for the specified company’s decline. Buy Bilkinton, Redwood, Facade, or Vapid only at the post-mission stage indicated in the sequence, then monitor its recovery and sell when its rise stops.
How to choose when to sell
Do not treat a return percentage from an old walkthrough as a guaranteed target. Vandal’s current guide advises monitoring the portfolio, and GameTruth likewise cautions that outcomes depend on the market state. Advance in-game time, check the relevant character’s portfolio, and sell when its return stops increasing. The exact peak can differ by version and market conditions.

- This game will no longer support Windows 7 or 8 operating systems starting January 30, 2024.
This approach also limits the risk of confusing a buy window with a sell window: the table distinguishes companies to buy before a mission from recovery shares that become relevant only after a decline. The Bus Assassination is the notable reversal—buy Vapid after its price has fallen, not before the mission.
What if BAWSAQ is unavailable?
Several trades in the sequence use BAWSAQ: Betta Pharmaceuticals, Fruit, Facade, and Vapid. Because BAWSAQ depends on internet connectivity and Rockstar services, a listing that fails to load or does not appear current is a reason not to risk a save you may need. Preserve the earlier save, wait and check again, or continue the story without that trade. The LCN trades in the sequence—Bilkinton, Debonaire, Redwood, and GoldCoast—are the relevant local-market alternatives, but they are not substitutes for a BAWSAQ company in the same scripted opportunity.

Other Story Mode ways to earn or invest
Heists, properties, and businesses
Heists provide campaign income, while properties and businesses can provide additional income. These options depend on story progression, purchase decisions, or setup choices, so they are not interchangeable with the mission-linked stock sequence. Keep the distinction clear: claims about businesses or payouts in GTA Online do not describe Story Mode.

Other story-event stock movements
Story events can affect stocks outside Lester’s missions, but these are less dependable as a planned fast-cash strategy. GTA BOOM’s September 25, 2013 stock-market guide describes Vangelico falling after The Jewel Store Job and recovering later, and FlyUS declining after Legal Trouble and recovering after Meltdown. Treat those as specific story-event movements, not guaranteed returns that apply across every version or save.

Ordinary stock speculation
You can trade outside the assassination sequence, but the available evidence does not establish a dependable, repeatable return for ordinary speculation. If your goal is fast, deliberate campaign wealth, the scripted Lester trades are the better-supported plan; if you still choose to speculate, use a separate save and do not risk money you need for a planned purchase.
How much money can you make?
There is no independently validated, publisher-issued current payout figure that can be treated as a guaranteed result. Guides and player reports describe large possible returns, but results vary with edition, platform, starting bankroll, market state, and the timing of each sale. The GTA Forum guide posted November 2, 2025, reports its author’s own outcomes on PS3 and PC; that is an individual report, not a population statistic or a promise that another save will reach the same total. Treat claims of a billion-dollar balance as conditional or anecdotal.
The practical way to maximize the opportunity is to delay the four optional assassinations until your final heist payout has enlarged the investment base, trade with all three protagonists, follow the correct exchange and buy timing, and sell according to the portfolio’s actual movement.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Doing all the assassinations as soon as they appear: complete the required Hotel mission, but delay the other four if you want to invest a larger bankroll.
- Buying with only one character: the three protagonists’ money and portfolios are separate, so repeat the intended investment for each.
- Buying Vapid before The Bus Assassination: this trade is made after the mission lowers its price.
- Using the wrong exchange: match the company to LCN or BAWSAQ as shown in the sequence.
- Holding for a fixed percentage from an old guide: watch the portfolio return and sell when the rise stops.
- Assuming mission replay repairs a missed trade: replay does not carry the stock effect into the campaign save.
- Assuming a BAWSAQ listing is current when the service is unavailable: verify listings before relying on a BAWSAQ-dependent investment.
- Applying GTA Online advice to Story Mode: businesses and money systems differ; use Story Mode-specific guidance.

The notes on other story-event movements draw on GTA BOOM’s “GTA 5 Stock Market Guide” (September 25, 2013), which is historical guidance rather than evidence of guaranteed current returns. Individual results described in the November 2, 2025 GTA Forum guide are treated as personal outcomes, not promises.
