You can make money clipping videos, but uploading clips or getting views does not automatically earn you anything. The defensible routes are platform revenue when your account and content qualify, a documented brand campaign, or paid clipping work for a creator or client. Before you publish, secure the rights to use the source material, add meaningful original value, and confirm the rules and eligibility that apply to your account and country.
Three ways clipping videos can earn money
Clipping means selecting a short segment from a longer video, livestream, podcast, or other source and editing it for a short-form platform. The money usually comes from one of three places. They differ in who pays, what must qualify, and how predictable the income is.

Choose the route before publishing. A platform program pays only when its eligibility and content rules are met; a campaign pays according to its contract; and service work pays according to the arrangement with the client. There is no reliable general per-view rate for clipping established here, so avoid earnings claims that treat views as a guaranteed paycheck.

What YouTube Shorts pays—and what it does not
YouTube Shorts revenue sharing is not an automatic payment for every view. A creator must qualify for YouTube monetization, accept the Shorts Monetization Module, and comply with the applicable policies. Only eligible Shorts views accrued after accepting the module can share in Shorts revenue.

YouTube says ads shown between videos in the Shorts Feed contribute to a creator pool. The pool is allocated according to each monetizing creator’s share of eligible engaged Shorts views; creators keep 45% of their allocation. That percentage is not 45% of all Shorts advertising revenue and is not a fixed amount per view. Actual earnings depend on eligibility, eligible views, allocation, and other program rules.
Why reposts can earn nothing
YouTube identifies unedited clips from other people’s movies or videos, reuploads of another creator’s content, and compilations without original content as examples of non-original Shorts. Engaged views on non-original Shorts are ineligible for revenue sharing. Artificial or fake views are also ineligible.
Adding captions, cropping to vertical, or changing the framing does not by itself establish that a clip is sufficiently original or eligible. A clip can also raise separate copyright concerns even if it has been edited.

Reused-content review is separate from copyright permission
YouTube reviews reused content across Shorts and other video formats, including commentary, clips, compilations, and reaction videos. Permission from the rights holder answers whether you may use the material; it does not by itself guarantee acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program or monetization of the channel. Conversely, adding original commentary does not give you copyright permission to use footage or audio you do not control.
YouTube clarified on July 15, 2025 that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy, describing this as clarification of existing policy rather than a change to reused-content review. A channel built from near-identical clips at scale should not assume that volume will make it monetizable.
There is an additional restriction for longer Shorts: Shorts longer than one minute that contain claimed content are blocked and cannot monetize. Check the current rules before publishing, because platform requirements and account eligibility can change.

Get rights before you edit or publish
Do not treat public availability as permission to republish. A clip may include video, music, graphics, or other material controlled by different rights holders. Ask for written permission or a campaign license from the person or organization authorized to grant it, and make sure the terms cover the actual use you plan.
Put the important terms in writing
- Which source videos or livestreams you may clip.
- Where you may publish the finished clips, including whether cross-posting is allowed.
- How long the permission lasts and whether it covers clips made during a campaign period only.
- Whether edits, captions, narration, translations, or promotional use are allowed.
- Whether attribution is required, and exactly how it should appear.
- Who owns the finished edit and whether you may use it in a portfolio.
- For paid work, the fee or payment formula, qualifying-view definition, exclusions, deadlines, payment method, and payment date.
Keep the permission and campaign terms alongside your source files and published links. If the source contains music or third-party footage, ask whether the permission actually covers those elements; a creator may not own every part of a video.
Make the clip meaningfully useful on its own
A strong clip is more than a shortened source video. Give viewers a reason to watch your version: add original narration, context, analysis, explanation, or a distinctive editorial structure. For example, explain why a moment matters, identify the question being answered, or place a brief excerpt inside a larger argument of your own.

There is no guaranteed edit formula that ensures monetization. Captions, reframing, transitions, and a new title may improve accessibility or presentation, but they should not be presented as proof of originality. The source material still needs appropriate rights, and the platform still makes its own eligibility and policy decisions.
A practical workflow for earning from clips
- Pick the payment route. Decide whether you are pursuing eligible platform revenue, a documented campaign, or a paid service for a creator or client. Do not publish on the assumption that views alone will pay.
- Confirm permission. Get written rights or a clear campaign license for the specific source videos and intended platforms. Check music and other third-party material as well as the main footage.
- Agree the commercial terms. If someone is paying you, document the fee or formula, deliverables, campaign window, qualifying views and exclusions, ownership, attribution, and payment details before work begins.
- Build an original edit. Select a segment with a clear point, then add meaningful narration, context, analysis, or editorial structure. Do not rely on cosmetic changes to turn a repost into original work.
- Check platform and country eligibility. Review the current rules and monetization availability for your account and location immediately before publishing or estimating income. Requirements can change; do not assume a program exists in every country or that your account qualifies.
- Publish and keep records. Save the license, source-video details, final edit, post URL, campaign correspondence, and performance evidence. For campaigns, preserve the accepted-view figures, exclusions, deadlines, and payment confirmation.
- Review the result against the right standard. For platform revenue, check monetization status and eligible views rather than raw view count alone. For a campaign or client, compare delivery and performance with the written terms.
Can you clip someone else’s stream or podcast?
Only if you have the necessary permission or license for the material and the intended use. Even with permission, platform monetization remains a separate question: YouTube can review a channel for reused content, and Shorts revenue requires program eligibility, opt-in, and eligible views. If you are clipping for the creator as a paid service, agree on the scope and payment directly rather than assuming platform revenue will compensate you.
What Twitch clips allow
Twitch’s clip tool supports clips up to 60 seconds and offers sharing to other platforms, including TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat. That sharing capability does not make every clip yours to republish or monetize. Streamers can control whether viewers may post clips from their channel elsewhere, and a channel owner or moderators may delete clips or issue a ban or timeout to clip creators.

Check the channel’s settings and the streamer’s instructions before cross-posting. If you intend to make money from the clip, obtain clear permission and agree on the commercial terms as well.
Can TikTok pay you for clips?
TikTok One is a creator-facing product for connecting with brand opportunities. It is a possible route to campaign work, not evidence that any particular clipper qualifies, that a suitable campaign is available, or that a campaign pays a specific amount. Check the live product requirements, country availability, and each campaign’s terms before applying or doing work.
Do not budget around a general TikTok clipping rate: a reliable universal rate is not established. For any offer, verify what counts as a qualifying view, what content and usage rights the brand receives, when the campaign ends, and when and how payment is made.

- Assuming views automatically mean earnings: verify the payment route and its conditions first; platform revenue depends on eligibility and eligible views, while campaign pay depends on written terms.
- Reposting without permission: obtain rights for the source and intended distribution before editing or uploading.
- Confusing permission with monetization approval: treat rights clearance and platform policy review as separate checks.
- Calling cosmetic edits original: add substantive commentary, context, analysis, or editorial value rather than relying on captions or a crop.
- Trusting vague campaign promises: record the exact qualifying-view rules, exclusions, deliverables, deadline, fee, and payment schedule.
- Assuming eligibility transfers across countries or accounts: check the current program terms for your own location and account.
- Using fake or artificial views: YouTube excludes artificial or fake views from Shorts revenue sharing; do not use them to inflate campaign or platform metrics.
