On an iPhone running iOS 26, the quickest way to enlarge Home Screen icons is Edit > Customize > Large App Icon. The important compromise is that large icons remove app names. If you need labels to remain visible or want more than the Home Screen enlarged, use Display Zoom instead. For icons that blend into wallpaper, Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast improve separation without changing icon size.
These controls solve different problems: icon dimensions, overall interface scale, background clarity, text legibility, and color perception. Start with the smallest change that addresses your difficulty, then add another setting only if necessary.

Choose the setting that matches the problem
Apple’s iOS 26 settings divide this task into separate controls. Enlarging the Home Screen is not the same as enlarging the whole interface, and improving contrast is not the same as increasing an icon’s dimensions.

A practical order is to try Large App Icon first if the problem is tapping or recognizing small icons, Display Zoom if many interface elements are too small, and accessibility display controls if wallpaper, transparency, color, or text is the real obstacle.

Make Home Screen icons larger
Apple documents the following path for iOS 26. You make the change from the Home Screen rather than from the main Settings app.
- Go to the iPhone Home Screen.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the app icons begin to jiggle.
- Tap Edit at the top of the screen.
- Tap Customize.
- Tap Large App Icon.
The icons enlarge immediately in the Home Screen customization view. Apple’s documented warning is: “In large size, the names of the apps disappear.” That means the setting favors visual recognition and larger touch targets over written labels. If you identify apps by their names, test the setting on a page containing your most-used apps before changing every page or deciding whether it suits you.
When large icons are the right choice
- You can read or recognize the artwork but have trouble distinguishing small icons at a glance.
- You want a larger target for tapping on the Home Screen itself.
- You do not depend on the text label underneath each icon.
When to choose something else
- You rely on app names because several icons look similar.
- You want icons, buttons, and text inside apps to become larger too.
- You need stronger separation from a busy or bright wallpaper rather than a larger symbol.
To return to labeled icons, repeat the same route—Home Screen, touch and hold, Edit, Customize—and select the standard icon-size option shown there instead of Large App Icon. The exact appearance of the panel can vary with the installed iOS version.

The same customization panel offers Dark, Clear, and Tinted icon styles. These are appearance choices, not guaranteed accessibility improvements.
- Dark changes the icon presentation to a darker style.
- Clear uses translucent icons. Transparency can make an icon harder to separate from a detailed photograph, gradient, or similarly colored wallpaper.
- Tinted lets you adjust the color and saturation. A stronger tint may make a group of icons more visually consistent, but it can also alter the colors you use to identify particular apps.
If visibility is your priority, compare a style against the wallpaper you actually use. A translucent style that looks clean on a plain background may be less legible on a photograph. Changing styles does not replace the size setting or the contrast controls described below.

Enlarge more of the iPhone with Display Zoom
Use Display Zoom when the problem extends beyond the Home Screen. Apple describes it as increasing text and interface elements such as icons and buttons, so it affects more of the operating system than the Home Screen-only control.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Tap Display Zoom.
- Select Larger Text.
- Tap Done.
- Tap Use Zoomed to confirm.
This is a broader scaling change. It can make controls in Settings and other supported areas easier to see, not just the icons on your first Home Screen page. Because it changes the overall layout, fewer items may fit on a screen and some pages may look different from the standard view. Decide whether that system-wide effect is acceptable before using it for a problem limited to a few Home Screen icons.

Large App Icon is the focused choice: it changes Home Screen icon size and removes the labels. Display Zoom is the wider choice: it enlarges text and interface elements across the phone. If labels are essential, try Display Zoom first or use text settings alongside the standard icon size. If only the Home Screen symbols are too small and labels do not matter, Large App Icon is the more targeted adjustment.
Make icons stand out from wallpaper
Sometimes an icon is physically large enough, but its edges or colors disappear into the background. Apple’s display accommodations are under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
Reduce Transparency
Reduce Transparency makes transparent and blurred backgrounds opaque with a solid color. This can help when translucent panels, folders, or other interface layers allow wallpaper colors to compete with the icons. It changes the background treatment; it does not enlarge the icons themselves.

Increase Contrast
Increase Contrast strengthens the distinction between foreground and background colors. Try it when text, symbols, or controls blend into their surroundings even after you have chosen a suitable icon size. The result is a visual-separation change rather than a scaling change, so it can be useful with either standard or large icons.
Use the two controls for different problems
Reduce Transparency is most relevant when see-through or blurred layers are the distraction. Increase Contrast is more relevant when the colors of an icon, label, or control are too similar to the background. You can test one at a time so you know which change helped and avoid making the entire interface more visually intense than necessary.
Improve labels and nearby controls
Home Screen icon size is only one part of navigation. If you can see the icon but struggle to read labels, menus, or buttons around it, Apple provides separate text and control settings.
Bold Text
Bold Text increases the weight of supported text. It can make labels and interface text more apparent without changing the icon artwork. Because the setting affects text rather than icon dimensions, it is useful when recognition depends on reading names.
Larger Text
Larger Text increases text size in supported apps. Apple also provides additional accessibility text sizes, allowing a larger range than the standard text-size control. Larger text can help with app names and instructions, but it does not directly enlarge the Home Screen icons.

Show Borders
Show Borders adds visual outlines around onscreen controls, buttons, and Control Center items. Use it when the difficulty is knowing what can be tapped, rather than identifying the picture on an app icon. It may make controls easier to distinguish while leaving the Home Screen icon size unchanged.
These controls are in the Accessibility display and text settings, while Display Zoom is in Display & Brightness. Keeping those locations in mind helps you choose the correct adjustment instead of searching for a single universal “icon size” switch.

Apple also documents display options for people who have difficulty distinguishing certain colors or who prefer a different screen appearance. They are not icon-enlargement controls.
Smart Invert and Classic Invert
Smart Invert and Classic Invert invert screen colors in different ways. They can change the appearance of the Home Screen, icons, images, and other content. Use them only when an inverted presentation improves your ability to distinguish elements; they can make familiar artwork look substantially different.
Color Filters
Color Filters adjust how colors are displayed. They may help with a particular color-perception difficulty, but Apple notes that filters can change how images and videos look. Check photos, videos, and colored app artwork after enabling a filter so you know what else has changed.
Differentiate Without Color
Differentiate Without Color provides non-color distinctions in supported parts of the interface. It is useful when color alone is not a reliable way to tell controls or states apart. It does not increase an icon’s size or guarantee that every third-party app will provide an alternate visual cue.
Limit visual changes with Per-App Settings
A global display change may be uncomfortable if only one app or the Home Screen is difficult to use. Apple provides Per-App Settings so you can choose separate color, text-size, and motion settings for selected apps or for Home Screen & App Library.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap Per-App Settings.
- Add the app or area you want to customize.
- Select the available color, text-size, or motion adjustments for that selection.
This approach is useful when a global change would make other apps harder to use. For example, you can keep the system at its normal appearance while applying a larger text size or a different visual treatment to a selected app. The available controls and menu wording can vary by iOS version and by the selected app.

Icons are too small, but you know them by appearance
- Enable Large App Icon from Home Screen Edit > Customize.
- Check whether losing app names causes a new problem.
- If wallpaper still competes with the icons, test Reduce Transparency or Increase Contrast.
You need the app names to remain visible
- Leave the standard Home Screen icon size enabled.
- Try Display Zoom > Larger Text if other interface elements are also small.
- Use Bold Text or Larger Text for labels and supported app text.
Everything on the phone feels undersized
- Use Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom.
- Select Larger Text, tap Done, then Use Zoomed.
- Review the Home Screen and frequently used apps because the change affects the broader interface.
The icons disappear into a photograph or colorful background
- Keep the icon size you prefer.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
- Test Reduce Transparency first if translucent layers are the issue.
- Test Increase Contrast if foreground and background colors are too similar.
- Reconsider the Clear icon style if translucent icons remain difficult to separate from the wallpaper.
Color is the main source of confusion
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
- Test the relevant color option, such as Color Filters or Differentiate Without Color.
- Review photos, videos, and app artwork because filters and inversion can alter their appearance.
Troubleshoot when a setting is missing or unhelpful
The menus do not match these steps
The paths above are Apple’s documented iOS 26 steps. Menu names and availability can vary with the installed iOS version and region. Use the Settings search field for terms such as Display Zoom, Reduce Transparency, Increase Contrast, or Per-App Settings, then open the matching Accessibility or Display & Brightness result.
Large icons helped, but losing labels did not
That is the documented behavior, not a failed setting: Apple says app names disappear in the large size. Return to the customization panel and restore the standard icon size, then use Display Zoom, Bold Text, or Larger Text if labels are the part you need to improve.
Contrast changes made the screen uncomfortable
Turn off the last display accommodation you enabled and test the other approach. Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast solve different visual problems, and neither is required when icon size or text size is the only issue. Per-App Settings can keep a change away from areas where it is distracting.
A color filter changed photos and videos
That effect is expected. Apple documents that filters can change the appearance of images and videos. Disable the filter when viewing color-critical content, or use a different accommodation if the underlying difficulty is contrast rather than color perception.
What to remember
For a direct Home Screen enlargement, use Edit > Customize > Large App Icon, understanding that app names disappear. For a larger overall interface, use Display Zoom. For icons that are hard to distinguish from their surroundings, use Reduce Transparency or Increase Contrast. Use Bold Text, Larger Text, Show Borders, color tools, and Per-App Settings only when the specific problem is text, controls, color perception, or the need to limit changes to selected areas.
