Hotel Chocolat’s instructions describe a preparation time of about 2.5 minutes. The exact fill reference and controls vary between the classic and newer models, so use the mark and controls on your own jug rather than assuming every Velvetiser operates identically.
The basic Velvetiser recipe
The simplest method uses two ingredients: liquid and drinking chocolate. Hotel Chocolat’s US recipe specifies 220 ml of dairy milk, a plant-based milk, or water, together with either one complete single-serve sachet or 35 g of flakes from a larger pouch (approximately six heaped teaspoons). The manufacturer says the drink is ready in about 2.5 minutes. See the US Velvetiser recipe guidance for that classic method.

| What you need | Amount or choice | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid | Use the fill reference on your jug. The classic recipe gives 220 ml; another US product page describes about 9 oz to the whisk notch. | Do not combine these figures blindly. Follow your own model’s marker. |
| Chocolate | One whole single-serve sachet, or 35 g of flakes from a larger pouch (about six heaped teaspoons). | Use the complete serving rather than an arbitrary spoonful. |
| Program | Hot, when your machine has a hot/cold dial; otherwise use the classic model’s single-button start. | Controls differ by model generation and region. |
| Cycle | About 2.5 minutes. | This is Hotel Chocolat’s stated cycle time, not an independent test. |
Before you start
Identify the control layout
There are two practical descriptions in the official instructions. The classic US Velvetiser is described with a single button. The newer US product page describes a dial that selects hot or cold before you press to start. UK sachet instructions also describe turning the dial right and then pressing it. If your controls do not match one of these descriptions, rely on the markings on your machine instead of forcing a sequence intended for another version.
Find the correct liquid marker
Fill lines are more reliable than a measuring jug when the pages for different models use different reference points. The classic US recipe names 220 ml. The newer US page describes approximately 9 oz measured to a notch on the whisk, while the UK sachet page says to fill to the maximum indicator. These are model- or region-specific directions, not three quantities that should be added together. Keep the liquid below the visible maximum and use the marker intended for your appliance.
#1 Best Overall
- SMOOTH MILK CHOCOLATE BALANCE – A creamy 50% cocoa blend delivering gentle cacao depth with soft milkiness for a smooth, rounded hot chocolate that’s rich yet easy-drinking.
- REAL CHOCOLATE FLAKES - Crafted with shaved chocolate flakes, not conventional cocoa powder. Keeping the cocoa butter creates a smoother melt, creamier texture, and richer chocolate flavor.
- MORE CACAO, LESS SUGAR - Crafted for those who prefer a richer chocolate taste with a more balanced sweetness level.
- PERFECT FOR ANY OCCASION – Great as an afternoon treat, dessert drink, or make it iced for summer refreshment.
- ETHICALLY SOURCED - As with all of our recipes, you can be sure that all the ingredients have been ethically sourced.
Prepare the chocolate
Use one complete sachet if you have single-serve sachets. If you are using a larger pouch, weigh 35 g; Hotel Chocolat equates that amount to roughly six heaped teaspoons. Put the flakes where they can be added directly to the liquid. The sachet instructions say the sachets work with all Velvetiser models.
Step-by-step: making one hot chocolate
1. Add the liquid
- Remove the jug from its base if it is sitting there.
- Pour in your chosen liquid, stopping at the fill mark specified by your model. Use dairy milk, a plant-based alternative, or water as permitted by the classic recipe.
- Check the level at eye height. The liquid should not exceed the maximum line or the model’s designated notch.
2. Add the drinking chocolate
- Add one full single-serve sachet, or measure 35 g of pouch flakes.
- Keep the lid and jug parts in their normal positions so the whisk can operate freely.
3. Select the program
- On a newer dial-equipped model, turn the dial to the hot setting.
- On the classic single-button model, use the single start button described in its instructions.
- If the labels on your machine use different wording, choose the setting marked for a hot drink rather than copying a control sequence from another model.
4. Start the cycle
- Press the control to begin.
- Leave the jug in place while the machine heats and whisks the mixture.
- Allow the approximately 2.5-minute cycle to finish. The product pages describe the newer model’s hot range as 154–158°F and the classic model as reaching a stated 155°F; these are manufacturer specifications.
5. Pour and serve
When the cycle stops, pour the drink into your mug and serve. If you are making more than one serving, complete separate cycles rather than exceeding the jug’s marked capacity.
Why the amount can look different on different Velvetiser pages
The official instructions are not contradictory so much as model- and region-aware. One US recipe gives a measured 220 ml. A newer US product description uses about 9 oz to the whisk notch, and the UK sachet page tells you to use the maximum indicator. The safest interpretation is that the appliance’s own physical marker takes priority over a generic volume copied from another page.
| Instruction source | Liquid reference | Control sequence | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Chocolat US recipe page | 220 ml | Classic recipe presentation | Use this as the classic-method quantity only when it matches your jug’s markings. |
| Hotel Chocolat UK sachet instructions | Up to the maximum indicator | Turn the dial right, then press to start | Follow the line and controls on a UK-compatible Velvetiser. |
| Hotel Chocolat US product page | About 9 oz to the whisk notch | Select hot or cold with the dial, then press | Use the whisk notch and hot selection on the newer dial model. |
Choosing milk, plant-based alternatives, or water
Dairy milk
Dairy milk is the default liquid in the classic recipe. Pour it to the appropriate marker before adding the chocolate. Because the Velvetiser heats and whisks the ingredients together, there is no separate saucepan step in this method.
Plant-based milk
The classic US instructions explicitly allow a plant-based milk. Treat it as a permitted substitution, not as a reason to change the chocolate quantity or exceed the fill line. Use the same complete sachet or 35 g serving unless the product packaging for your particular chocolate says otherwise.
Water
Water is also listed as an option in the classic US recipe. It produces a different base from milk, but the operating sequence remains the same: fill to the model’s mark, add the chocolate, select the hot program when available, and start.
Getting the measurement right
Single-serve sachets
Empty the entire sachet into the jug. The UK product page identifies the sachets as compatible with all Velvetiser models, so you do not need to split a sachet to match a particular generation.
Large pouches
Measure 35 g of flakes for one drink. Hotel Chocolat describes this as about six heaped teaspoons, but weighing is the more repeatable option because spoon size and how tightly flakes are packed can vary.

- Chocolatier Imagined. Obsessively engineered: Introducing the only system for hot and cold drinking chocolate. Unlock a library of chocolatier imagined flavor. The all new Velvetiser - drinking chocolate as it should be.
- The Vortex Effect: Combining a custom designed whisk with patent-protected innovation, the all new Velvetiser's Vortex-Effect creates an unrivalled texture.
- Hot & Cold Capabilities: Engineered to work in harmony with our hot and new cold drinking chocolate recipes, the Velvetiser’s thermodynamic programming has two settings: one for hot chocolate, one for cold. Its hot chocolate setting melds real chocolate flakes at approximately 155-157 degrees Farenheit, the optimum melting point for chocolate. Its cold chocolate setting is uniquely calibrated to pulse at the beginning, gently melding finely milled real chocolate with pre-chilled milk.
- US Power Supply: No assembly required, manufactured for US power outlets.
- InnerPod Ridges: Patented ridges act as barrier to flow, condensing these air passages to aid the melding process and stabilise the vortex.
Do not estimate the liquid from the chocolate amount
The chocolate serving and the liquid fill level solve different problems. The 35 g figure describes the chocolate portion; the machine’s line or notch determines how much liquid the jug can process for its intended cycle. Measure each independently.

Hotel Chocolat describes a roughly 2.5-minute hot cycle. On the newer US product page, the stated hot range is 154–158°F; the classic US description gives a stated 155°F. Those numbers are manufacturer claims for the respective product descriptions, not measurements made by an independent laboratory or a guarantee that every drink will reach exactly the same temperature in every kitchen.
Use the completed cycle as the stopping point rather than restarting repeatedly to chase a particular number. If your machine’s display, dial, or instruction label gives a different model-specific direction, that physical guidance takes precedence over a figure copied from another version.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
| What happened | Likely issue visible from the instructions | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The liquid level is above the line | A measured quantity from another model was used instead of the jug’s own marker. | Stop before starting and reduce the liquid to the indicated notch or maximum line. |
| The machine has a dial but will not run after pressing | The hot/cold selection may not have been made first. | Turn the dial to the hot setting, then press to start as described for the newer model. |
| A classic model has no hot/cold selector | Instructions for the newer dial model were followed. | Use the classic model’s single-button start. |
| The drink tastes weak | Only part of a sachet or an unmeasured amount of flakes was added. | Use one whole sachet or the specified 35 g serving on the next cycle. |
| The drink is not ready after a few seconds | The normal heating-and-whisking cycle has not finished. | Allow the stated approximately 2.5-minute cycle to complete. |
| You are unsure which volume applies | US and UK pages describe different reference points. | Use your own jug’s fill marker and the controls printed on that model. |
Cleaning the Velvetiser after making hot chocolate
Hotel Chocolat’s cleaning guidance says to wait until the machine has cooled and to unplug it before cleaning. This is the complete sequence described on the newer US product page:
- Wait for the jug and contents to cool.
- Unplug the appliance.
- Lift the jug off its base.
- Remove the lid and the whisk.
- Wipe the inside of the jug, the lid, and the whisk with warm water, a soft sponge or cloth, and a small amount of dish soap.
- Rinse or wipe away soap residue as appropriate, then allow the parts to dry before the next use.
The important safety points are the cooling period, unplugging, and separating the jug from its base before cleaning. Do not start the cleaning step while the unit is still hot or connected to power.
A repeatable routine for busy mornings
Once you know your model, the process can be reduced to a short checklist:
- Check the jug’s liquid marker.
- Pour in milk, a permitted plant-based alternative, or water.
- Add one complete sachet or 35 g of flakes.
- Select hot on a dial model, or use the single start button on the classic model.
- Wait for the approximately 2.5-minute cycle.
- Pour the drink.
- Cool, unplug, remove the jug, lid, and whisk, and clean them with warm water, a soft sponge or cloth, and a little dish soap.
This routine keeps the two variables that differ between official pages—liquid reference and control layout—anchored to the appliance in front of you, while keeping the chocolate serving consistent.

Which official instructions should you follow?
Use the instructions supplied with your Velvetiser first. For a classic single-button US machine, the classic US recipe page provides the 220 ml and 35 g method. For sachets and a UK machine, consult the UK sachet instructions. For the newer US dial model, the US product page describes the whisk notch, hot/cold selection, cycle timing, temperature specification, and cleaning precautions. When a general recipe and your appliance’s physical markings differ, the appliance marking is the decisive instruction.
