How to Make Google Your Default Search Engine on Chrome, Safari, and Firefox

To use Google whenever you search from a browser’s address bar or search field, change the browser’s Search engine or Default search engine setting. The path depends on your device: Chrome uses Settings > Search engine, Safari on Mac uses Safari > Settings > Search, Safari on iPhone uses the iPhone’s Settings > Search > Search Engine menu, and Firefox uses Settings > Search. These controls choose the search provider; they are separate from the setting that chooses your default web-browser app.

What changing the default search engine actually does

Your default search engine is the provider that receives searches typed into a browser’s address bar, search bar, or new-tab search field. Selecting Google does not install a new browser, change your home page, or make the browser itself your default app. It changes where search queries are sent.

A device can have more than one relevant setting. Chrome stores its own search-engine choice on each device or profile. Firefox has a default engine plus optional search shortcuts. Safari on Mac has a regular-browsing engine and, in current versions, a separate Private Browsing engine. On iPhone, Apple exposes the Safari search-provider choice through the system Settings app. If one browser or one browsing mode still shows another provider, check the setting for that exact scope rather than changing an unrelated menu.

Choose the instructions for your device

Browser and device Where to change it Important scope or exception
Chrome on Windows, macOS, Linux, or Chromebook More (⋮) > Settings > Search engine Use Change or Manage search engines and site search if the current provider must be replaced or removed.
Chrome on Android More > Settings > Search engine This is a Chrome-app setting, not the Android default-browser setting.
Chrome on iPhone or iPad More > Settings > Search engine This applies to searches made in Chrome, not automatically to Safari.
Safari on Mac Safari > Settings > Search Check the separate Private Browsing search-engine option when private windows behave differently.
Safari on iPhone Settings > Search > Search Engine This system setting controls the search provider used by Safari and iPhone web searches.
Firefox on desktop Menu > Settings (or Preferences) > Search Set Default search engine; extensions and search shortcuts can affect what you see.

Set Google as the default in Chrome

Chrome on a computer

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Select More (⋮) in the upper-right corner.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Open Search engine.
  5. In the search-engine selector, choose Google.

In some Chrome releases the page shows a Change button beside the current search engine. Select Change, choose Google from the available providers, and confirm if Chrome asks you to do so. The label and layout can vary slightly by operating system and Chrome version, but the setting remains under Settings > Search engine.

If an unwanted provider is already configured and Chrome does not offer the choice you need, open Manage search engines and site search from the same section. This page lists installed search engines and site-search shortcuts. Use the controls beside an entry to make Google the default, edit a shortcut, or remove an entry that you no longer want. Chrome may keep built-in entries that cannot be deleted; selecting Google as the default is the part that changes address-bar searches.

To verify the change, open a new tab, type a distinctive test phrase in the address bar, and press Enter. The results page should be hosted by Google. Do not test by clicking a bookmark or a page’s own search box, because those actions can use that site’s search system rather than Chrome’s default.

Chrome on Android

  1. Open the Chrome app.
  2. Tap More (⋮).
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Search engine.
  5. Select Google.

Return to a regular Chrome tab and type a test query in the address bar. Android’s default-browser choice is a separate setting: changing which app opens links does not select the search provider inside Chrome, and selecting Google in Chrome does not make Chrome the system’s default browser.

Chrome on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Chrome app.
  2. Tap More (⋮).
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Tap Search engine.
  5. Select Google.

Test from Chrome’s address bar after returning to a normal tab. If searches in Safari still go somewhere else, change Safari’s setting separately; Chrome and Safari do not share one universal in-app search-engine selection.

Set Google as the default in Safari

Safari on a Mac

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Choose Safari from the macOS menu bar.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Click Search.
  5. Set Search engine to Google.

Safari also documents a separate search-engine choice for Private Browsing. If ordinary Safari windows use Google but private windows send searches to another provider, stay on the Search pane and change the Private Browsing search engine value as well. A private window can therefore appear to ignore your normal selection even when the regular setting is correct.

Safari versions can present the search control differently. In some versions, you can also click the magnifying-glass icon in the search field and select Google from the search-provider menu. Use the Settings path when you want to inspect both regular and private-browsing choices in one place.

To check the result, open a standard Safari window, click the Smart Search field, type a test phrase, and press Return. Repeat in a Private window if you changed that separate setting.

Safari on an iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Search.
  3. Tap Search Engine.
  4. Select Google.
  5. Go back to the previous screen or leave Settings.

This is an iPhone system setting used for web searches, including Safari. It is not the same as choosing a default browser app. If you use Chrome on the same iPhone, change Chrome through Chrome’s own More > Settings > Search engine menu as described above.

Open Safari, tap the address field, enter a test query, and submit it to confirm the result. If Safari and Chrome show different providers, that is expected when their independent settings differ.

Set Google as the default in Firefox

Firefox on Windows, macOS, or Linux

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Open the Firefox menu.
  3. Choose Settings on current releases, or Preferences in versions that use that label.
  4. Select Search.
  5. Find Default search engine and choose Google from the drop-down list.

Firefox lets you choose the engine used from the address bar and the separate search bar. It also supports search shortcuts and alternative engines. A shortcut can intentionally send one query to another provider without changing the default. After selecting Google, test a normal address-bar search without invoking a shortcut.

If Google is not listed, inspect the search-engine entries and installed add-ons. Firefox may have an engine supplied by an extension, and an extension can also change the default after you set it. Remove or disable the responsible extension, then return to Settings > Search and select Google again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the search engine keeps changing back

Repeatedly selecting Google is not a complete fix when another control is overwriting the setting. Identify the cause that matches your browser and device.

An extension changed the default

Firefox specifically warns that extensions can set a new default search engine. A browser add-on that claims to provide coupons, privacy tools, a new tab, or search features may request permission to control search. In Firefox, open the Add-ons or Extensions manager, disable the extension you do not recognize or no longer need, restart Firefox if requested, and set Google again under Settings > Search. If the change stops, remove the extension permanently and review the remaining add-ons.

Chrome extensions can also modify search behavior. Open Chrome’s extensions manager from the browser menu, review extensions with search or new-tab permissions, and remove any that you did not intentionally install. Then revisit Settings > Search engine.

Malware or an unwanted program is controlling search

Chrome notes that an unexpected search-engine change may indicate malware. Warning signs include a search page you did not choose, unfamiliar toolbars, new tabs opening by themselves, redirects, or settings that revert immediately after you change them. Remove suspicious recently installed applications, run your operating system’s reputable security scan, and review browser extensions before trying the setting again. Avoid installing a second unknown “cleaner” advertised by a pop-up; that can add another unwanted component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the browser reports that an administrator controls the setting, a security scan alone may not resolve it. Continue with the managed-device check below.

A work or school administrator applied a policy

Chrome can be managed by a work, school, or other organization. A policy may force a particular search engine or prevent users from editing the list. On a managed computer, the organization’s administrator controls that policy; repeatedly changing the local menu will not override it. Contact the organization’s IT support if the setting is required for work or study, and do not remove management profiles from a device you do not own.

You changed the wrong scope

Three scope mistakes are common:

  • You changed Chrome but are testing in Safari, or changed Safari but are testing in Chrome.
  • You changed Safari’s regular engine but are testing in a Mac Private window.
  • You changed Chrome’s or Firefox’s default engine but used a site’s internal search box or a saved shortcut for the test.

Repeat the test in the same browser and mode whose setting you edited, using the address bar rather than a page-specific search field.

A reliable verification checklist

  1. Identify the browser. Confirm whether the search was entered in Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.
  2. Identify the device. Desktop, Android, iPhone, and iPad place the control in different menus.
  3. Check the exact setting name. Look for Search engine or Default search engine, not Default browser.
  4. Set Google. Choose Google and close the settings page.
  5. Use a clean test. Open a normal tab or window, type a new phrase into the address bar, and submit it.
  6. Test private mode separately where applicable. On Mac Safari, verify the Private Browsing engine independently.
  7. Investigate persistence problems. Review extensions, malware symptoms, and management policies if the provider changes again.

Common situations and the correct fix

What you observe Most likely explanation What to do
Chrome on a laptop uses another provider after you selected Google. An extension, malware, or administrator policy changed the setting. Review extensions, scan for unwanted software, and check whether Chrome reports that the browser is managed.
Firefox changes back after every restart. An extension is resetting the default. Disable or remove the extension that controls search, then select Google again in Settings > Search.
Safari regular windows use Google but Private windows do not. Safari has a separate Private Browsing search-engine setting on Mac. Change the Private Browsing search-engine value in Safari > Settings > Search.
Chrome uses Google but Safari on the same iPhone does not. The browsers have separate controls. Set Chrome inside Chrome; set Safari through iPhone Settings > Search > Search Engine.
A search from a web page goes to another provider. The page’s own search box or link is being used. Test from the browser address bar to evaluate the default search engine.
The search provider is fixed on a company computer. Device-management policy is enforcing it. Ask the organization’s administrator; local browser changes may be blocked.

Search engine versus default browser: do not confuse the two

Default search engine answers the question, “Which service handles searches typed into this browser?” Default browser answers, “Which app opens links from other apps?” You can use Chrome as the default browser while selecting Google, another provider, or a managed provider inside Chrome. You can also leave Safari as the default browser on an iPhone and choose Google through the iPhone’s Search settings. Changing one does not automatically change the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to expect after the change

Only searches routed through the browser’s address bar or configured search field use the selected default. Bookmarks, direct website addresses, links, browser history suggestions, and search boxes embedded in websites follow their own behavior. Firefox search shortcuts deliberately let you send an individual query elsewhere, and Safari Private Browsing on Mac can have its own provider. These are normal exceptions rather than evidence that the main setting failed.

The setting may also be stored per browser profile or per device. If you use multiple Chrome profiles, check the profile that is active when you search. On a shared or managed device, another person’s profile or an administrator policy can produce a different result without changing your personal profile.

Quick paths at a glance

  • Chrome computer: More (⋮) > Settings > Search engine > Google.
  • Chrome Android: More > Settings > Search engine > Google.
  • Chrome iPhone/iPad: More > Settings > Search engine > Google.
  • Safari Mac: Safari > Settings > Search > Search engine > Google; check Private Browsing separately.
  • Safari iPhone: Settings > Search > Search Engine > Google.
  • Firefox: Menu > Settings or Preferences > Search > Default search engine > Google.

When the setting still will not hold

Use this order so you do not erase useful browser data unnecessarily:

  1. Confirm you edited the same browser, device, profile, and browsing mode used for the test.
  2. Check the exact default-search-engine field and select Google once more.
  3. Remove or disable unfamiliar extensions and test again.
  4. Look for redirects, unsolicited toolbars, or other signs of malware and run a trusted security scan.
  5. Check whether the browser or device is managed by an employer, school, or other organization.
  6. On Safari Mac, inspect the separate Private Browsing search-engine value.

If a policy is enforcing another provider, only the administrator can change that policy. If an extension or unwanted program is responsible, removing the cause is what makes the Google selection persist.
