You can make GIMP feel substantially more familiar to a Photoshop user by switching to a single-window workspace, arranging Layers and Tool Options where you expect them, choosing a comfortable theme and icon set, and remapping only the shortcuts you use most. These changes reduce navigation and muscle-memory friction, but they do not turn GIMP into a pixel-for-pixel Photoshop clone.
This guide targets GIMP 3.x. Menu labels can vary slightly by operating system or later release, so use the current GIMP manual if a label has moved.

Start with the right GIMP version
Use GIMP 3.x documentation for this setup. GIMP 3.0 moved the interface to GTK3, improved HiDPI scaling and tablet support, and introduced a CSS-based theme system. Its release notes also describe non-destructive GEGL filters that can be edited, toggled, or removed after application. See the GIMP 3.0 release notes for the version-specific details.

The release notes cover link and vector layers, improved mask handling, and a shortcut for switching between the two most recently used tools. They also explain how filters on an empty layer group in Pass through mode can recreate an “Adjustment Layer” workflow from other software. If you are on an older 2.10 installation, the general ideas below still apply, but some appearance controls and non-destructive workflows are different. Do not assume that a 3.x menu path or feature is present in 2.10.
Build a Photoshop-familiar workspace
Turn on Single-Window Mode
- Open the Windows menu.
- Select Single-Window Mode.
- If the command is already checked, leave it enabled.
Single-window mode keeps the toolbox, docks, and image windows inside one application frame instead of scattering them across separate operating-system windows. That alone makes the workspace easier to scan when you are used to a conventional desktop editor.
GIMP’s default 3.0 single-window arrangement places Tool Options, device status, undo history, and image-related controls in the left dock around the Toolbox. The upper-right dock can contain Brushes, Patterns, Fonts, and Document History, while the lower-right dock contains Layers, Channels, and Paths. The official Dialogs and Docking manual documents this arrangement and the mechanics for changing it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Arrange the panels around the work you do
There is no official “Photoshop layout” preset. Instead, use the documented dock system to put the panels you consult constantly in predictable places.
| Workspace area | Recommended contents | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Left dock, beside or below the Toolbox | Tool Options | Tool settings stay next to the tool you just selected. |
| Lower-right dock | Layers, Channels, Paths | Layer and mask work remains visible without opening floating dialogs. |
| Upper-right dock | Brushes, Patterns, Fonts, Document History | Secondary resources are available as tabs without taking permanent canvas space. |
| Any convenient dock tab | Undo History or other dialogs you check occasionally | Less-used panels stay accessible without crowding the primary controls. |
To add a dialog, choose Windows → Dockable Dialogs, select the dialog, and then drag its tab into an existing dock. You can also use the tab menu’s Add Tab command. Drag a tab until the docking highlight appears, then release it. If you accidentally create a floating dialog, drag its tab back into the main window.
Keep Layers visible on the right and keep Tool Options close to the Toolbox if you are trying to reproduce the general rhythm of a Photoshop workspace. This is a practical arrangement, not a promise that panel positions or controls will match one-for-one.

Hide the docks when you need a larger canvas
Move the pointer over the image window and press Tab to hide the docks. Press Tab again to restore them. This gives you a clean, artwork-first view without permanently changing the arrangement. It is useful when a narrow laptop display makes the docked panels consume too much canvas.
Use the toolbox and Tool Options together
When a tool is selected, its settings appear in Tool Options. Docking that panel directly beneath the Toolbox makes the relationship obvious: choose a tool, then adjust its options in the same vertical area. If Tool Options is missing, reopen it through Windows → Dockable Dialogs → Tool Options, or double-click a tool in the Toolbox. The GIMP tools manual explains the placement and behavior.
Choose a familiar visual style without chasing an exact clone
Select a light, gray, or dark interface
GIMP 3.0’s welcome-dialog personalization includes light, gray, and dark interface variants. Choose the one that gives you the same contrast and panel readability you prefer in Photoshop. A dark interface can make a bright image stand out, while a light interface can make text and icons easier to distinguish in a bright room.
Pick an icon style that supports recognition
The same personalization controls offer symbolic, color, and legacy icon styles. Symbolic icons reduce color noise and can feel closer to a restrained dark workspace; color icons can make tools easier to identify at a glance; legacy icons may be useful if you already know GIMP’s older visual language. Choose based on recognition and contrast rather than assuming one style is objectively more “Photoshop-like.”
Use tool grouping and menu options deliberately
GIMP 3.0 also exposes tool grouping and menu-toolbar options. Grouping related tools can shorten the Toolbox, but it can also hide a tool behind a flyout. If you are rebuilding muscle memory, start with the arrangement that keeps frequently used tools visible, then group only tools you rarely select.
The theme system moved to CSS in GIMP 3.0, which makes custom themes easier for developers to create. A third-party theme may change colors or spacing, but compatibility and maintenance are not guaranteed. Treat custom themes as optional appearance experiments, not as an official Photoshop emulation.

GIMP’s own FAQ explains why the project does not simply copy Photoshop’s interaction decisions. The FAQ says: “This is exactly the kind of approach to designing interfaces that we consider to be superior to merely copying others’ user interaction decisions.” The project’s stated priority is helping people complete tasks, so visual similarity has a limit even after extensive customization. See the GIMP Project FAQ for that explanation and for the project’s statement that GIMP is free software that can be used commercially.
Remap keyboard shortcuts in small, useful batches
Open the shortcut editor
- Choose Edit → Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Search for an action by typing part of its name.
- Select the command in the results.
- Press the key combination you want to assign.
- If GIMP reports that the combination is already in use, decide whether to replace the existing assignment or cancel.
- Keep Save keyboard shortcuts on exit enabled, or use the dialog’s save command.
You can reach the same configuration through the Preferences dialog’s Interface section and its Configure Keyboard Shortcuts button. The Keyboard Shortcuts Dialog manual covers the editor and save behavior.
Map only the commands that cause friction
Do not replace every shortcut on the first day. Start with commands you invoke repeatedly and commands whose GIMP location interrupts your work. Search by the action’s name rather than guessing which menu contains it. For example, search for the operation you need, select the exact result, and assign a combination that is free in your current configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake a short list before editing:
- Commands you use dozens of times in a session.
- Commands whose current GIMP shortcut conflicts with a habit formed in another editor.
- Commands you repeatedly reach through menus because you cannot remember the default shortcut.
- Commands that must be available with one hand while the other hand stays on a pen or mouse.
Change a few assignments, work for a day, and then adjust. Large-scale remapping creates conflicts that are difficult to diagnose, especially when a new shortcut silently replaces a command you still need.
Use GIMP’s built-in action search before adding shortcuts
GIMP 3.0 documents / for action search, including GEGL filters. Press the slash key, type the action or filter name, and choose the result. This is often faster than memorizing a shortcut for a command you use only occasionally. If you are on GIMP 3.0 or later and a command is easy to find through action search, leave it unassigned until you know it deserves a permanent key.
GIMP 3.2 documents Shift + X for switching between the two most recently used tools. That can remove the need to create a custom shortcut for a common two-tool workflow, provided your installed version supports it.

Keep a recovery path
When a shortcut behaves unexpectedly, reopen the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog and search for the key combination or the command name. Resolve the conflict shown by the dialog instead of assigning another combination at random. If your configuration becomes confusing, restore a small set of known assignments rather than rebuilding every shortcut from memory.

Make Tool Options predictable
Tool Options are one of the biggest sources of “GIMP feels different” frustration because the selected tool’s settings are persistent. Options such as mode, opacity, size, feathering, and similar controls can remain set between sessions. That persistence is useful once configured, but it can make a tool appear broken when an old setting is still active.
Check options before blaming the tool
- Select the tool that is producing the unexpected result.
- Look at the Tool Options panel next to the Toolbox.
- Check the mode, opacity, size, aspect or feather settings, and any toggles specific to that tool.
- Set the values you actually want, then try the operation again.
If Tool Options is not visible, use Windows → Dockable Dialogs → Tool Options or double-click the active tool. Because settings persist, deliberately establish a baseline for the tools you use most. For example, check the selection mode before making a new selection and check opacity before painting or cloning.
This is a workflow adjustment rather than a visual one: keeping Tool Options visible prevents hidden state from undermining the shortcut and layout changes you made elsewhere.

Non-destructive filters in GIMP 3.0
GIMP 3.0’s release notes describe non-destructive GEGL filters. After applying a supported filter, you can re-edit it, toggle it, or remove it instead of treating the first result as permanent pixels. That is closer to an editable-effects workflow than a one-way filter operation, although the controls and terminology remain GIMP-specific.
When learning this workflow, keep the original layer intact, apply the filter through the current filter interface, and confirm that the filter remains editable in the layer or effect controls. Do not assume every historical plug-in or every operation is non-destructive; the behavior depends on the filter and the version.

Pass-through layer-group filters in GIMP 3.2
GIMP 3.2 release notes state: “This allows you to recreate an ‘Adjustment Layer’ workflow from other software.” The context matters: the technique uses filters applied to an empty layer group with the group set to Pass through. The filter affects the layers below while remaining organized at the group level.
To try that pattern, create an empty layer group, set its mode to Pass through, add the relevant filter to the group, and keep the affected layers organized beneath it. Verify the result on a duplicate image or a copy of the document first. This is a way to structure an editable workflow; it is not evidence that GIMP implements every adjustment-layer feature or blending behavior identically.
Layer, mask, link, and vector improvements
GIMP 3.2 also documents link and vector layers and improved mask handling. These changes can make complex documents easier to organize, especially when several elements must move together or when masks need repeated editing. The exact controls depend on the layer type, so consult the release notes and current manual for your build rather than importing assumptions about Photoshop layer icons or commands.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use recent-tool switching
If your installed version is GIMP 3.2 or newer, try Shift + X to switch between the two most recently used tools. It is useful for alternating between a drawing tool and an editing or navigation tool without returning to the Toolbox. If the shortcut does nothing, confirm the version and check the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog for a conflicting assignment.
Test PSD files instead of assuming round-trip compatibility
Making the interface familiar does not guarantee that a Photoshop document will render or save identically in GIMP. Do not make a blanket assumption that every PSD feature survives round-tripping.
Use a copy for the first test
- Duplicate the original PSD before opening it in GIMP.
- Open the copy and inspect the layer stack, visibility, masks, text, effects, and color appearance.
- Compare important areas with the original application or a trusted reference export.
- Edit a non-critical element, save a test copy, and reopen it.
- Only rely on the workflow for production after the actual files pass the checks that matter to you.
Pay special attention to text layers, layer effects, masks, clipping or linked relationships, blend modes, and color management. If a document depends on a feature you cannot verify, preserve the original and export a flattened or otherwise agreed interchange copy for that specific handoff. This cautious testing is more reliable than assuming that a familiar panel layout means identical file behavior.
Troubleshoot the common “it still feels wrong” problems
The panels keep moving or appear in separate windows
- Confirm Windows → Single-Window Mode is enabled.
- Reopen the missing dialog from Windows → Dockable Dialogs.
- Drag the dialog’s tab, not the panel’s empty space, until the docking highlight appears.
- Use the tab menu’s Add Tab command when you want to place a dialog beside an existing one.
A shortcut does the wrong thing
- Open Edit → Keyboard Shortcuts and search for the command name.
- Check whether the combination is already assigned elsewhere.
- Choose a free combination or deliberately replace the old assignment.
- Make sure shortcuts are saved on exit or save them directly in the dialog.
A tool suddenly paints, selects, or transforms incorrectly
- Look at Tool Options for the active tool.
- Check mode, opacity, size, feathering, and tool-specific toggles.
- Remember that options persist between sessions.
- Repeat the operation after returning the setting to the intended value.
The interface looks too cramped
- Press Tab over the image to hide docks temporarily.
- Move low-use dialogs into tabs instead of leaving them open side by side.
- Use a larger monitor scale or the HiDPI improvements available in GIMP 3.x.
- Choose an icon style with enough contrast for your display and lighting.
A feature mentioned in a tutorial is missing
Check the tutorial’s GIMP version. The 3.0 and 3.2 release notes describe different interface and layer capabilities, and labels can shift between releases or operating systems. If a menu path is absent, search the action name with / where supported, then check the current manual for your installed version.
A practical migration sequence
Changing everything at once makes it hard to tell which adjustment helped. Use this order for a calmer transition:
- Confirm the version. Record whether you are using GIMP 3.0, 3.2, or another release before following version-specific instructions.
- Enable Single-Window Mode. Restart only if your platform requires it, then make sure the docks remain inside one frame.
- Dock Layers and Tool Options. Put Layers in the lower-right area and Tool Options beside the Toolbox.
- Choose the interface style. Select light, gray, or dark mode and then choose symbolic, color, or legacy icons.
- Hide secondary dialogs in tabs. Keep Brushes, Fonts, Patterns, History, and similar panels available without crowding the canvas.
- Test your everyday tools. Check Tool Options and establish the settings you want to persist.
- Map a small shortcut set. Use the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog, resolve conflicts, and save the configuration.
- Use action search and recent-tool switching. Press / for searchable actions where supported and Shift + X in GIMP 3.2 for the two most recent tools.
- Try editable workflows. Explore non-destructive GEGL filters in GIMP 3.0 and the pass-through group technique documented for GIMP 3.2.
- Validate real documents. Test copies of the PSD files, including masks, text, effects, and color before adopting the setup for production.
GIMP is free software and can be used commercially, but familiarity should not be confused with parity. The strongest result comes from matching the parts that slow you down—panel placement, visual contrast, and a handful of shortcuts—while learning the GIMP-specific parts that remain different.
