Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse the appliance’s dedicated Air Fry, Grill Fry, or equivalent browning mode—not microwave-only reheating—and follow the accessory and placement instructions for your exact model. Leave room for air to circulate, turn food as directed, and use that model’s recommended settings; there is no single time, temperature, or accessory that works for every combo.
Start with the right cooking mode
Check the control panel and manual for a dedicated browning mode such as Air Fry, Grill Fry, or Slim Fry. A standard microwave setting heats food differently and is not the same method. Feature names and availability vary: Samsung, for example, says its Grill Fry and other grilling features are not available on all microwave models (Samsung support).

Use the instructions for your exact model to confirm whether the mode needs preheating, which accessory belongs in the cavity, where it should sit, and what cookware is allowed. Manufacturers use different designs: GE describes its Air Fry feature as rapidly heating air and circulating it with a fan, while Maytag describes its manual Air Fry function as forced air combined with a grill. Samsung’s Grill Fry uses microwaves, a sheath heater, and a crusty plate. These are not interchangeable operating instructions. See the manufacturers’ guidance for GE Appliances, Maytag, and Samsung.

Use the correct accessory and placement
Depending on the appliance, the specified accessory may be an air-fry basket, rack, or crisping plate. Use the one the manual calls for, in the stated position; another accessory may not expose food to heat or airflow in the intended way. Whirlpool also provides model-oriented guidance on using an air-fry basket or tray (Whirlpool support).

- Speedy Cooking: Directly press the start button to cook food at 100% power for 30 seconds and press again for an additional 30 seconds.
- Child-Lock Setting: Press the stop button for 3 seconds to lock the control panel to keep little hands from clicking buttons on the appliance.
Do not assume metal cookware is safe in every mode. Some manufacturers permit metal only for a specified convection or air-fry function. In microwave-only mode, follow the manual’s cookware restrictions and do not put metal in unless the model instructions explicitly allow it for that mode. Manufacturer guidance on metal use is available from Samsung.
Arrange food for airflow and even browning
- Avoid crowding. Hot air needs room to move around the food. KitchenAid advises against overcrowding its air-fry cooking space (KitchenAid support).
- Use one layer when the model directs it. Maytag’s guidance for its example of frozen fries and nuggets calls for a single layer. If your basket is full or pieces overlap, cook in batches rather than piling food up (Maytag support).
- Turn or flip as instructed. Follow an appliance prompt, or the manual’s directions for when to turn food. KitchenAid recommends flipping halfway through for its air-fry guidance; that timing is not a universal rule for every combo or food (KitchenAid support).
Choose settings from your model’s instructions
Use the preset or manual for the food you are cooking. Time and temperature, whether preheating is required, and whether the appliance asks you to turn food can all differ by model and recipe. KitchenAid advises adjusting recipe time and temperature for its air-fry method, while Maytag gives different example settings for vegetables, fresh meat, and frozen or breaded foods. Those are instructions for the manufacturers’ respective systems, not universal combo settings (KitchenAid; Maytag).

If your appliance offers a supported preset for the food, start there. Otherwise, consult the model manual rather than borrowing a time or temperature from a different brand’s instructions. For frozen fries and nuggets on the Maytag model covered in its guidance, the manufacturer says to cook them without thawing, in one layer, and turn when prompted; other appliances may direct you differently (Maytag support).

Oil can be part of a model’s or recipe’s instructions, but it is not required for every food or appliance. Samsung suggests brushing its crusty plate with oil for a crisp brown crust, and Maytag gives examples of brushing some fresh chicken and vegetables with oil. Follow the guidance for your own model and recipe rather than coating every item by default (Samsung; Maytag).

Foods to try
Manufacturer examples include frozen fries, chicken nuggets, chicken wings, breaded foods, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and zucchini chips. These are examples of foods used in manufacturer guidance, not a promise that every combo will produce the same result. Check for a matching preset or directions in your appliance manual (KitchenAid; Maytag; GE Appliances; Whirlpool).
If the food is not crisp
- Check the selected mode. Make sure the appliance is using its dedicated browning function, not microwave-only cooking.
- Make space for airflow. Reduce the amount in the basket and cook in batches; follow single-layer directions where they apply.
- Check the accessory and its position. Confirm it is the specified basket, rack, or plate and is installed as the manual directs.
- Turn food at the indicated point. Follow the prompt or model instructions so the exposed sides can brown more evenly.
- Recheck the model’s settings. Confirm the right preset or manual time and temperature, plus any preheating or cookware requirements.
Handle the basket and hot surfaces safely
Accessories and the oven interior can become very hot. Maytag warns that the cavity, door interior, basket, and glass tray may be hot, and directs users to use mitts for the basket. Follow your own manual’s handling and appliance-safety instructions. For food-safety temperatures or leftover-reheating guidance, consult an authoritative food-safety source; the appliance how-to instructions linked here do not establish universal numerical safety thresholds.
