Install Firefox, open its menu, choose Settings, and select Make Default in the Default browser section. If that button does not complete the change, use Windows 11’s Default apps settings to assign Firefox to the web link and file types you use.
What “default browser” means in Windows 11
Your default browser is the app Windows uses when another application opens a supported web link. Mozilla Support defines it as “the app that opens when you click a link in an email, document, or another application.” This setting affects links launched from places such as email, documents, chat apps and other desktop software; it does not remove other browsers from your PC.

Windows 11 can store defaults separately for applications, file extensions and link protocols. The two web protocols you are most likely to see are HTTP and HTTPS. A browser can therefore appear to be the default for ordinary web links while a particular file type or protocol still points elsewhere.

Before you start
- Firefox must already be installed. Windows cannot select an application that is not present on the computer.
- Use a Windows account allowed to change app defaults. On a managed work or school PC, an administrator policy may control some associations.
- Keep Firefox open during the change so you can use its built-in default-browser control and immediately test a link.
The exact wording or placement of a control can change as Firefox and Windows receive updates. The labels below match Mozilla’s Windows instructions and the Windows 11 settings layout documented for this task.

Method 1: Make Firefox the default from Firefox Settings
This is the quickest route because Firefox requests the common Windows associations for you.
- Open Firefox from the Start menu, desktop, or taskbar.
- Open the Firefox application menu by selecting the menu button (the three horizontal lines) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- In the Settings page, find the Default browser section.
- Select Make Default.
If Firefox is already the default browser, the Make Default control is not shown. That absence is confirmation that Firefox currently owns the default browser association.
When the control succeeds, Windows may close or switch focus to its Default apps page briefly, or Firefox may simply update the section to show that it is the default. Open a link from another application to verify the result rather than relying only on the button’s appearance.

Method 2: Set Firefox in Windows 11 Default apps
Use this method when Firefox’s one-click control reports that it could not complete the change, or when you need to inspect individual associations.
- Select the Start button (or press the Windows key).
- Type Default apps into Search.
- Open the Default apps system-settings page from the results.
- In the list or search field for installed applications, select Firefox.
- Review the entries shown for Firefox. Windows may list common web file types and protocols separately.
- Set Firefox for the web associations you want to change, especially
HTTPandHTTPS. Depending on the Windows 11 build, a Set default button may apply the common associations automatically. If it does not, open each relevant entry and choose Firefox.
Windows also documents assigning defaults by application, file type or link type. The application view is usually the most efficient starting point; the individual entries are useful when one specific kind of link still opens another browser.
Which route should you use?

Neither route establishes a difference in browser performance or quality. They are two ways of changing the same operating-system associations: Firefox’s route favors convenience, while Windows Settings gives you more control over each type.

Check that Firefox is actually the default
After changing the setting, verify both the browser status and a real link.

A status indicating Firefox is the default, or the absence of the Make Default button, confirms Firefox’s reported state.
- Open Windows Default apps, select Firefox, and inspect the entries for
HTTPandHTTPS. They should point to Firefox if you want both ordinary and encrypted web links handled there. - From a separate application, select a normal web link. Firefox should open it. Test a link from the application where you noticed the problem, because some apps use their own link-handling setting.
- If a particular document or link type still opens elsewhere, return to Firefox’s entry in Default apps and change that specific association instead of repeating the general browser switch.
Why Edge can still open some Windows links
Changing the default browser does not guarantee that every clickable surface in Windows will use it. Some Windows Search results and taskbar features that open online content use a Microsoft-specific protocol rather than the ordinary HTTP or HTTPS associations. Those links may continue to open Edge even while Firefox is correctly set as the default for supported web links.
This is a Windows-specific exception, not necessarily evidence that the Firefox setup failed. Confirm the standard protocols in Default apps and test a regular link from another application. If those open in Firefox but a Search or taskbar result opens Edge, the special protocol is the likely explanation.

Troubleshooting when the change does not stick
The Make Default button is missing
Firefox hides that control when it already considers itself the default browser. Check Windows Default apps and open a standard link to confirm rather than trying to find a button that is intentionally absent.
Firefox says the one-click change did not work
Use the Windows route: open Default apps, select Firefox, and assign the listed web protocols and file types manually. Windows 11 may apply common associations with Set default; if not, select Firefox for each entry you need.

Inspect the exact association for that link or file type. A setting for HTTPS does not automatically prove that every other protocol or document extension points to Firefox. Windows’ per-type view is designed for this case.
Search or taskbar links still open Edge
First test an ordinary link from an email, document or another application. If it opens in Firefox, your standard browser defaults are working; the Windows-specific protocol used by that Search or taskbar feature is outside the normal browser association.
Firefox is not listed in Default apps
Confirm that Firefox is installed, then close and reopen the Settings page. If it still is not listed, launch Firefox directly and use its Settings > Default browser section, which can initiate the registration Windows needs. On a managed computer, an administrator policy may also restrict available choices.
A Windows update changed the screen
Look for the same destinations rather than relying on an identical layout: Firefox’s application menu still leads to Settings and Default browser, while Windows Search still finds Default apps. Microsoft can reorganize the page or change whether Set default applies all common associations at once, so review the individual entries when the result differs from the expected behavior.
What changing the default does—and does not do
- It changes link handling: supported links opened by other applications are directed to Firefox.
- It can change file and protocol associations: Windows 11 may treat web protocols and file extensions as separate choices.
- It does not uninstall other browsers: existing browsers, bookmarks and profiles remain installed unless you remove them separately.
- It does not override every Windows surface: Microsoft-specific links from some Search and taskbar features can continue to open Edge.
When to review the setting again
Recheck the association after a major Windows or Firefox update, after installing another browser that asks to become default, or when links from a newly installed application behave differently. A quick check of Firefox’s Default browser section and Windows’ HTTP/HTTPS entries will identify whether the change was replaced or whether the application is using a special link protocol.
Mozilla’s Windows guidance was updated June 9, 2026, and its general default-browser explanation was updated June 10, 2026. Interface labels can change after those dates, but the distinction between Firefox’s one-click control and Windows’ per-association settings remains the key to diagnosing differences.
