Yandex does not provide the same offline-file workflow for cloud-only files on a computer.
What Yandex Disk’s Offline section does
An item in Yandex Disk’s Offline section is a device copy of a file or folder that you deliberately downloaded through the mobile app. After the download finishes, you can open that copy when the phone or tablet has no internet connection.

The cloud original remains in Yandex Disk. Removing an item from the Offline section removes the local copy from the device; it does not delete the original stored in your Yandex Disk account. This makes the feature useful when you are travelling, working in places with unreliable service, or trying to avoid repeatedly downloading the same files.

You choose the files or folders that should be downloaded, and you can later remove those local copies to reclaim device storage.

How to save files offline on Android
The Android app puts the offline control in the top bar after you select an item.
- Open the Yandex Disk app and go to the file or folder you want to keep on the device.
- Select one file, or select multiple files and folders.
- Tap Offline at the top of the screen. The selected items are added to the Offline section and marked as offline.
- Leave the app connected to the internet until the download completes, especially for large folders or files.
- To open a saved item later, open Files and choose Offline in the top bar.
Choose whether mobile data may be used
If your cellular allowance is limited, check the Yandex Disk app setting that controls offline downloads over a network. Depending on the option you choose, downloads can be allowed over any available connection or restricted to Wi-Fi only. Set this before selecting large files so the app does not use mobile data unexpectedly.
What happens when the cloud file changes
If a file is changed on another device, Yandex says the offline copy on your Android device is updated after the phone reconnects to the internet. The device therefore needs to go online periodically if you want its downloaded copy to reflect later changes made elsewhere.

How to save files offline on iPhone or iPad
On iOS and iPadOS, the Offline command appears through a row gesture or the multi-select toolbar.
- Open the Yandex Disk app and locate the file or folder.
- Swipe the item’s row and tap Offline.
- For several items, select the files or folders first, then tap Offline at the bottom of the screen.
- Wait for the items to download while the device has a connection.
- Open the app’s Offline section from the bottom navigation to view the saved copies without going online.
Remove one or more offline items
Select the saved items and tap Offline again to remove them from the section. This removes their device copies but leaves the originals in Yandex Disk.
Clear the entire Offline section
- Open Settings in the Yandex Disk app.
- Choose Clear offline.
- Confirm the action.
Clearing the section is a storage-management action, not an account deletion. Files and folders in the cloud are not erased by this command.

Android, iPhone and computer: what is different?

The platform difference is important: the mobile app’s Offline section is the supported way to prepare selected files for disconnection. Opening a cloud-only item in a desktop browser or desktop folder does not create the same offline availability.

Download only what you need
Offline files are stored locally, so select the documents, folders, videos or other items you actually expect to use away from a connection. A large folder can consume substantial free space even though the cloud version remains unchanged.
Check the Offline list before a trip or outage
Open the Offline section while you are still connected and confirm that the required items appear there. This also gives the app an opportunity to finish downloading and update copies changed on another device.

Free space without deleting cloud data
On Android, remove selected items from the Offline section when you no longer need local copies. On iPhone or iPad, select the items and tap Offline again, or use Settings > Clear offline to remove all local offline copies. In both cases, the originals stay in your Yandex Disk account.
Do not confuse an offline copy with a second backup
The Offline section is intended for access without a connection. It is not a separate cloud account or an independent backup service. Removing an offline copy is safe for the cloud original, but any edits made only to that local copy still need to be synchronized or uploaded if they are to become the current cloud version.

Offline access and editing: what will sync?
Downloading a file for offline viewing does not guarantee that edits made in another phone or tablet app will automatically return to Yandex Disk. Yandex notes that changes may fail to synchronize when sync is disabled in the Disk app.
If you edit a downloaded file outside the Yandex Disk app, check that synchronization is enabled before relying on the cloud copy being updated. When synchronization is unavailable or disabled, the dependable fallback is to save the edited file and upload it manually to Yandex Disk. Treat the uploaded file as a new or replacement cloud copy according to the file-management choice shown by the app.
When a change was made on another device
For an item already marked offline, Yandex says the local copy is updated after the phone reconnects to the internet. If the device has not reconnected, it can still show the older downloaded version. Reconnect before an important reading or presentation session and allow the app to refresh.

According to Yandex’s FAQ, you cannot work offline with your files on a computer through the service. Yandex’s desktop help likewise explains that files or folders kept only in the cloud require an internet connection.
That means the mobile instructions in this guide do not transfer to a desktop browser or a computer folder automatically. If a computer is the device you must use while disconnected, a cloud-only Yandex Disk item will not be available through the service’s normal online location. Prepare any computer documents through a separate, deliberate local-copy workflow before disconnecting, and do not assume that a cloud-only file will open simply because it is visible in the desktop interface while online.
Troubleshooting offline downloads

Prepare your files before losing connectivity
A short preparation routine prevents most offline surprises:

- On Android or iOS, add those items to Offline using the platform-specific control.
- Use Wi-Fi when the files are large or your mobile-data plan is limited.
- Open the Offline section while connected and verify that every required item is listed.
- Open an important file once before disconnecting so you know the local copy is usable.
- For Android, note the folder path because offline search does not search subfolders.
- If another device recently changed a file, reconnect and let Yandex Disk update the offline copy before leaving coverage.
- If you edited a downloaded file in another app, confirm synchronization or plan to upload the edited copy manually.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking for an Offline button on a computer: the documented Offline section is a mobile-app feature, and cloud-only desktop files require internet access.
- Assuming opening a file once downloads it: add the item explicitly to Offline and verify it in that section.
- Searching the whole Disk while disconnected on Android: offline search is restricted to the currently open folder, not its subfolders.
- Deleting a cloud file to free phone space: remove it from Offline instead; that deletes the local copy while preserving the cloud original.
- Expecting edits in another app to sync automatically: check Disk synchronization, and manually upload when sync is disabled or unavailable.
- Ignoring sharing permissions: a file owner can disable downloads, and public files can face temporary download restrictions after heavy daily demand.
