Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play local videos in order, then loop the playlist and send the output to YouTube’s ingest URL. The basic setup is a UTF-8 playlist file, a compatible set of video files, an FFmpeg command paced in real time, and the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The example below is a starting point, not a guaranteed command for every file or FFmpeg build.
Before you start
- Install an FFmpeg build that includes the required demuxer and encoders. Check your installed build and test the exact command with your files before scheduling a broadcast.
- Have the videos available on the machine that will run FFmpeg, with stable paths and enough storage.
- Create or select a YouTube live stream and keep its server URL and stream key private.
- Plan to leave the host, network connection, and FFmpeg process running. A local FFmpeg workflow depends on all three.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a manifest of files as one input. Its inputs need matching streams, codecs, and time bases; inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts or gaps. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Build an ordered playlist
Create a UTF-8 text file named playlist.txt in the directory where you will run FFmpeg. Put one file directive per video, in the order you want them to play:
file '/media/video-01.mp4'
file '/media/video-02.mp4'
file '/media/video-03.mp4'
Use paths that exist on the streaming host. Quote paths carefully, especially if filenames contain apostrophes or unusual characters. The concat demuxer’s safe mode rejects some paths; -safe 0 permits them, so use it only when you control the manifest contents.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose between stream copy and re-encoding
Stream copy: less encoding work, stricter compatibility
If every file has compatible streams, codecs, and time bases, copying packets can reduce CPU use. It does not normalize differences between files. Mismatches or inaccurate duration metadata may cause playback problems at transitions.
Re-encode: more work, consistent output
Re-encoding can normalize the playlist to one output profile, but requires enough CPU or supported hardware encoding capacity to keep pace. Choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe cadence to match YouTube’s current guidance and the host’s capabilities. No single bitrate or profile is appropriate for every source and stream configuration; check the current recommendations in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Run a looping FFmpeg command
This illustrative command loops the concat input indefinitely, paces prerecorded media in real time, re-encodes video and audio, and sends an FLV output over RTMP:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmp://YOUR_SERVER/YOUR_APP/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the destination with the current ingest server URL and stream key displayed for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room. The combination of -stream_loop -1 and a concat input is a practical pattern, but validate it with your installed FFmpeg build and media before relying on it. FFmpeg’s documentation includes an RTMP FIFO example using real-time pacing, H.264/AAC, and FLV output: FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The command’s encoder options are illustrative rather than a universal YouTube preset. If your files are not compatible for concatenation, normalize them or re-encode as appropriate. If using stream copy, do not assume the re-encoding options shown above apply unchanged.
Protect the stream key
Treat the key like a password. Avoid putting a real key in public scripts, screenshots, shell history, or logs. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the server URL and stream key as the destination configuration; consult its current instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube and go live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab, then create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the displayed server URL and stream key into FFmpeg’s output destination. Do not share the key.
- Start the FFmpeg command and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- For a scheduled stream, wait until the preview appears, then click Go live in Live Control Room.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes primary and backup ingest addresses and supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest types. For a conventional FFmpeg playlist, RTMP or RTMPS is the simpler starting workflow unless your chosen format requires another protocol. YouTube documents HLS as an alternative for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP; HLS has higher latency and requires compliant segments, playlists, and HTTPS delivery. See YouTube LiveStreams API documentation and YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Test the playlist and monitor the live output
- Play through the full playlist before scheduling a long broadcast; check transitions, audio, and whether all files open.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for errors and whether reported processing speed stays at real time or faster.
- Check YouTube’s preview and health indicators. The API recognizes stream health states including good, ok, bad, and noData.
- Plan for input errors, timestamp discontinuities, host restarts, encoder overload, and network or output failures. A running FFmpeg process alone does not ensure YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Understand FIFO recovery limits
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents recovery options for certain output failures. Its RTMP recovery example includes -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1, alongside real-time pacing, H.264/AAC, and FLV. Dropping packets during queue overflow favors continued processing over completeness. Recovery settings do not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast; consider process supervision and alerting outside FFmpeg for a 24/7 deployment. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

Do not assume a single 24-hour archive
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will become one uninterrupted archive. If archive continuity matters, consult current YouTube Live guidance and plan around this documented limit.
Copyright and channel eligibility
Only stream material you have the rights to use, including music and other people’s video. A technically valid FFmpeg stream does not establish permission to broadcast its contents or guarantee that a channel qualifies for monetization. Review YouTube’s current live-stream policies and rights requirements before broadcasting.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg rejects a playlist path | Malformed manifest quoting, an invalid path, or concat safe-mode rejection. | Confirm each file path and manifest line. Use -safe 0 only for a playlist you control, and handle apostrophes and unusual characters carefully. |
| Playback breaks or artifacts appear between videos | Incompatible streams, codecs, time bases, or inaccurate duration information. | Inspect the inputs for compatibility. Normalize or re-encode them to a consistent profile if needed; test the transitions before going live. |
| The stream buffers, drops, or stops | Network/output trouble, overloaded encoding, a host restart, or an input/timestamp error. | Check FFmpeg errors and processing speed, host and network stability, and YouTube preview and health. FIFO recovery can address some output failures but is not a continuity guarantee. |
| YouTube shows no preview or an unhealthy stream | Incorrect ingest URL or key, FFmpeg output failure, or a stream not yet started in Live Control Room. | Verify the current URL and key in the selected stream, inspect FFmpeg output, wait for preview, and check stream health before clicking Go live on a scheduled broadcast. |
| The stream appears live but is silent | The source may lack audio, use incompatible audio streams, or fail during concatenation. | Check each file’s audio and the FFmpeg output for audio errors. Normalize audio formats if the playlist inputs are inconsistent. |
